Has anyone out there tried to copy a database backup tape to disk?
My goal is to create an 1:1 image of a database backup tape to (remote) disks
during unattended times. Use of dd (dd read error: Not enough space) or
cat (creates a file white length 0) fails. tcopy works well for creating a

You could try running monthly incrementals under a different nodename (ie:
create another dsm.opt file eg: dsmmthly.opt) to your TSM (same or even
dedicated) server.
We have the financial regulatory requirement also and regular archives are
not the way to go.
Hi there,
I would like to know your opinion about a problem with the
results of scheduled commands.
We moved our USS TSM client from V4 to V5. We have a

Hi,
no idea about your DD problem,
but why do´nt you simply perform an out-of-bound backup to a disk (device

We've considered using either FTP (or NFS mounted filesystems if performance

this all relatively easy--

Hi Rainer!
Thanks for you reply! We tried changing the TDP node's password on the TSM
server.
Actually, the problem was solved by removing an incorrect inludeexclude
statement from one of the option files.

Hello Valeriano,
In the case of your third pattern, you understand that the files may not
be there, so it is not a failure (in practice) if the archive does not
work. On the other hand, you say that your first and second patterns
always have files to process. So suppose that TSM did not report
Backups for one of our NT 4.0 servers running TSM 5 Release 1 Level 5.2 (Server

service, the same ANS1017E message is reported in the log and a session cannot be

Hi *Smers,
Could anybody explain me why I consistently see backup stg jobs freezing ? What
happens is that the job begins, but thereafter hangs for a while, doing nothing at
all, and suddenly starts copying data on tape. I saw this behavior on severall flavors
of TSM (actually on 4.2.3.1),
I don't know why this is happening, but as the messages suggest, it is
probably a network-related issue. Since your note suggests that other
clients ran successfully, can we assume that the TSM server is up and
running?
Some other things to try:
1) From an OS prompt, change into the directory
The Resource Utilization parameter in your client dsm.opt will set the number of
streams that the backup will use hence the number of drives. So if you only have two
streams going directly to tape you would only uses 2 tape drives.
I think the Resource Utilization sets the multi-streaming

I have no idea if my posts are getting through to the list since time to

I am wondering how you all have managed capacity plans on your TSM Servers.
Does anyone have a
We recently migrated from TSM Server V 4.2.1 to TSM Server V 4.2.3
We used to run a script that gave us the Total Data Backed up for last night. Now
after we migrated to v 4.2.3 this script has stopped working. We know for a fact that
we backup close to 900 GB evry night (on one Server) but it
Ok, now I'm rereading posts. UserA's ntuser.dat is copied to the adsm.sys
directory. These are not automatically restored with the registry restore
so they will not overwrite the Administrators profile. You manually copy
UserA's profile from adsm.sys if you want to.

Hello,
I'm using TSM 4.1.5 and a few days ago the web interface became too slow...
When i use it on the TSM Server it is fine... but when i use it from a
remote computer it become too slow...
Has anyone seen it before?
Thanks in advance,

Geoffrey,
I do pretty standard metrics by tape count, occupancy, CPU utilization,
paging, network interface utilization, etc, for my capacity planning. I'm
afraid there's really no formula per se that's useful in the real world.
The TSM documentation describes how you can take your %change,

Richard,
That would make sense, if the job was freezing in the middle of the
copies, but apparently, it just waits a while before starting to write
the first bit of data to tape, and then goes fine till the end !
Thanks anyway ;-)
