I'm wondering if there are filesystem fragmentation issues when using
devclass=file on an NFS mounted DD volume. Filesystem fragmentation is an
issue when using devclass=file on most filesystems that I'm aware of. How
long have you been running this way on the DD?

Hmm, good question. I'm not sure of the answer. We have only been
running it for about 30 days so far.
Under the covers it the appliance runs a customized Linux 2.6 kernel,
but customers only have a limited login shell, so I'm not sure what the
underlying filsystem type is.

Hello All,
Thanks for your hep!!
We have a WIndows 2003 server running the 5.4.0.2 TSM client. The nightly
scheduled backups have been failing due to the following error.

To me it sounds like a protocol difference between the tape drive and
the HBA.
You probably have tried all of these, but you never know what will
trigger the Oh yeah moment.
1. Is it always the same drives?
2. Have you tried power cycling just a tape drive instead of the
library?
3. Are all of the
Is there a limit to the number of TSM servers and/or reports that can be

Nothing runs! The service is running, the

Don't know what the limit is, but it isn't 7 - I've gone to 8

How about the number of reports? I've split out the hourly monitor in to
individual monitor reports so that the email notification
has the report title in the subject instead of the generic Hourly Monitor and
the TSM server name. So I actually have about 9
monitor for each of those 7 TSM

Sorry, don't know about the monitors.
I've got one customer that is generating the max number of reports off 1 TSM

50's.

enough. We're already running 5.4.1.1 on another TSM server with no
problems, so I'm not too concerned about that. I've looked through the

Try running a del vol on the volumes and see what happens. If you know
there is no valid data on any of them add the discarddata=yes. That is
if the label volume doesn't work. If TSM thinks the volumes are valid it
will not relabel them.

From: ADSM:
Probably the library has it assigned a category other than insert or
scratch.
Use your mtlib command to query the tape...
mtlib -l/dev/lmcp# -qV -VC01861(where # is the proper lmcp1 or lmcp2
etc... that your library is as found via aix command lsdev -Cctape)
Look for the category data...
I've gone from 5.3.4 up to 5.4.1 and then up to 5.5.0 without issues.
I've also gone from 5.3.4 straight up to 5.5.0 without issues.
I also went to the latest Atape and atldd at the same time.
Atape.10.7.3.0.bin
atldd.6.5.5.0.bin
The installp commands associated with the Atape atldd
I would like to know if you guys have ran into any problems, issues,

I would suggest you go all the way to 5.4.2.0.
Thanks for the comment, Mark. Usually I'd agree with you. In this case,
we want to match the level we have on our third TSM server. We like to
keep as few variations of maintenance inhouse as we can, and that level
has worked flawlessly for us.
We went from 5.2 to 5.3 to 5.4.0.0 to 5.4.1.2 and hit a rare bug that
crashes the server during reclamation, we were forced to 5.4.2.0. One
of our two servers hit the bug.
May yours go better than ours.

IBMtape has been replaced by lin_tape, which can be found here

as it shares most of its code with IBMtape. Even the kernel module it
