Hi Nick...
Excellent hint. I think this will help me out substantially. With
this snippet of information and file sizes (also reported in 'query
content') I should be able to minimize platter flopping. =)

Hi Allen. =)
The goal is to move this data (through a conversion process) onto new
hardware, and Content-Addressable-Storage (CAS) technology like
Centera or IBM's DR550. Given the size of the data, this migration
will take months, and the systems simply can't be offline, nor is an
investment
Hi Allen...
Good recommendations, but there are some issues with your suggestions...
Using the MOVE DATA command actually moves the data -- moving it back
to optical means burning another WORM platter... Again, I don't have
the time nor the budget to be re-burning 2000 platters, and as I

It's a quoting issue... SQL in general prefers single quotes around

but it's unfortunate to see that nothing's changed on newer versions.
In my experience, the unresponsiveness lasts as long as the format

You question was a little vague, but I understood it to mean that you
want to test tapes for integrity, before you load them into your TSM
system.
You didn't mention which platform you're on, but AIX has 'tapeutil'
for most IBM drives (the ones that I've worked with anyway).
'tapeutil' allows you
Follow the directions for the 5.1 to ML4 upgrade explicitly -- I
un-tar'd everything into one directory and let smit have it's way,
which was a huge mistake -- thankfully it was a brand new server with
nothing on it.
It's also a good idea to back up /usr/ccs/lib/libc.a to somewhere
else, like /tmp
In this case, 'tsm' is different from 'TSM'. 'tsm' is the program
used by functions like 'login' on AIX. I suspect someone is trying
to connect to your machine via telnet or ftp, and never logging in.

In my experience with TSM on AIX, and by reading some other docs, I
think I can confidently state the following...
TSM's database is a relational database - it relates information

TSM supports a subset of SQL to allow you access to the tables in

And this is a very important point. I could be wrong, but I seem to
recall that TSM's encryption uses straight up DES, which uses a 56 bit

Yes, NIST has been looking for a replacement for DES for decades.
Hi Bruno...
A few things...
1) Upgrade immediately, if not sooner. ADSM (version 3.1) is very old and
is unsupported, and if you encounter problems, you'll need to call on a
highly paid consultant who remembers all the sillyness that came along with
3.1. If you're running 3.7 or higher (when
Um, why would you need the key?
Your question is a little too vague to answer properly.
The key is only needed for two steps: encryption, and decryption (ie
backup, then restore). Every other operation the TSM server does (store,
copy, move, collocate, expire) is done with the encrypted files.
Look up the 'nopreempt' -- TSM Admin Reference for 4.1 - Page 1324. (In
Appendix B - Tailoring Server Options if you're not using 4.1.)

My understanding from what I've read (I've never used it) is...

Files are sent to the TSM server, encrypted.

You didn't say which platform you're on, but the idea is that you can

I've been using TSM for quite a few years on AIX, and surprisingly, this
issue hasn't come up before.
My customer is using TSM in conjunction with Content Manager OnDemand. The
config looks like this:

OnDemand, DB2, TSM
Data is cached on disk (by OnDemand, not TSM), and also
Unsubscribe information can (always) be found at ADSM.ORG, specifically...

To leave the list at any time, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] stating
SIGNOFF ADSM-L in the body of the e-mail.
My approach is very similar, but probably a little more database intensive...
dsmadmc -id=uid -password=pass -outfile=tsmrpt -tabdelimited select
filespace_name,sum(file_size) as \File Size\ from contents group by
filespace_name
The resulting file should be able to be parsed easily and imported
Putting all the OS/HW dogma aside, IBM/Tivoli doesn't support TSM on NT as
seriously as it does on other, more 'expensive' platforms.
Earlier this year, we discovered a serious (fatal actually) flaw with TSM
on WinNT 4. TSM would hang each and every time a platter was unmounted
from a drive in

This was written by one of the list members, and is quite good, and has a

fast, and
Actually, one of my customers who uses Content Manager OnDemand in
