Re: Problem in Archive...

2009-02-11 Thread Richard Sims

The description of the ANS1008E message in the Messages manual, of via
'dsmc help' explains the problem. You're missing an Archive type copy
group in your management class.

Go to http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg244877.html
and download that redbook to read and gain an understanding of the
Copy Group in the product. It's important to master the basic
concepts before trying to implement Archive and Backup operations.

You might be able to physically read data from TSM tapes, depending
upon tape vs. drive compatibilities, compression, and encryption; but
you'd be hard-pressed to identify the right tape to read, or position
to the right spot.

Tapes are not like disks: you don't delete files from within them.
TSM expires data by eliminating its knowledge of file locations on
tapes, but the data stays on the tapes until the tapes are re-used.
If you need to wipe data from a tape, your choices are to write over
the tape or physically destroy the tape.

cannot run command

2009-02-11 Thread ashish sharma
Hello all,

My TSM server version is

Storage Management Server for AIX-RS/6000 - Version 5, Release 3, Level 5.0
on AIX.

The issue i am facing is that when i try to give command like q path or
q mount the command hangs as shown below

*
tsm: TSMLMq mount

 *

and does not give any o/p but when i give command like q session, it works
but again i am unable to cancel any session.Does anybody has any idea why is
it happening?I think restaring the server might solve the problem but at
present i am not in favour of it.

As root - run lsdev -Cc tape and see if your drives and medium changer
are showing up as available - if shows up as defined then you might
have a device problem. You have not mentioned what kind of library and
also if it is a direct connect as scsi or via FC adapter etc etc?

Re: cannot run command

2009-02-11 Thread Howard Coles
What are the other two TSM instances doing? I'm assuming they share the
Library and drives right?
It could be that this TSM instance is just waiting for access to the
drives.

Also what state were some of the sessions in? Like media wait
running etc.

I usually see this behavior when something is waiting for the library
and it's taking its time.

I meant to mention if you have a 3584 you should be able to access the
web interface and see which drives have tapes mounted. That will give
you an idea of how busy the library is.

2009-02-11 Thread Howard Coles
No, we're not sugarcoating anything. The Library itself has a web
interface, that displays pretty much everything and anything you need to
know about it. It will display drive error numbers, mounts, cleaning
tape usage, etc. It may be you have tape drives that are needing to be
cleaned, and are waiting on a cleaning tape to be mounted. Sometimes
there are tapes that are sitting in the drives for one reason or another
where they shouldn't be, or a picker might have a tape stuck in it, or a
I/O door may have been left open.

So, the best route is to go to the web interface and check for errors,
look at the drives' status, the io status, etc.

Howard

I find this strange that you don't have any processes running at this

I ran into this problem recently. In a nutshell, you can't install both
the required gskta and tivoli.tsm.client filesets in one pass.
(Chicken and egg dependency problem?)

The workaround I found was to make two passes through smitty installp.
The first time select and install the gskta filesets. The second time
through, select and install the client filesets.

I've installed this client level on AIX on three or four different
machines, and each time the workaround was required, and each time it
was succcessful.

Re: cannot run command

2009-02-11 Thread Alex Paschal
Hello, Ashish.

I've seen this before in library manager environments. Usually I
recommend people bring down all their TSM servers, then on each TSM
server's host, delete their device files (rmt* and smc*), run cfgmgr to
redetect, restart TSM, and update their paths. It's the surest fix.

If you want to spend the time to troubleshoot and find out what broke,
try this, then send us the output of the lsdev command again. This will
set each device to defined and then back to available. If they stay
defined, then those device files have a problem. This shouldn't affect
devices already in use - it should just say device busy or something
like that. Note: You will probably have to do this on all your TSM
servers' hosts.

Re: reading tape wirthout tsm

2009-02-11 Thread Alex Paschal
Hi, Hana.

Yes, you can read the tape. However, recovering files from the data you
read will be so difficult that recovery is infeasible.

You will have to mount the tape, then use some kind of utility to read
the tape to a big file. In UNIX, we would use dd. I have no idea what
similar utilities exist for Windows. Here is an excerpt from a document
I had to write up for management once upon a time.

Once the tape has been read to file, the file will then have to be
processed to extract individual files. There is no utility that does
this -- it will be a manual process. If text files are targeted, this
could be fairly simple. Non-text files, for example, .docs, .xls, .pdf,
.jpg, etc, will be significantly more difficult. Someone would have to
manually identify file begin and end points. If done incorrectly, the
file will not be read correctly by MSWord, Adobe, etc. If an individual
file spans file aggregates, then they will have to be manually appended
- again, correctly. A disk recovery utility may help as they do similar
reconstruction from disk blocks, but a low success rate would be
expected. If client compression or encryption are enabled, it will be
nearly impossible to figure out how to decompress/decrypt the files. A
data recovery service may be able to extract more data, but such
services are expensive. Cost benefit analysis weighing the recovery
cost, file type, and likelihood of failure against the value of the data
will determine the feasibility of a recovery attempt.

For a fun example of this process, put a .jpg, .doc, and .pdf file into
a directory. From the command prompt, type each file and append it to
a test file like so:
c:\test type file.jpg testfile
c:\test type file.doc testfile
c:\test type file.pdf testfile

Then use a hex editor to open testfile and see how much fun it is to try
to separate them. And that's with the advantage of knowing what's
there. It gets much harder with fragmented file aggregates.

The only reason TSM can read the tape is because the database knows
where all the file segments start and stop.

So, yes, while it is possible to read the data from tape, it will be
prohibitively expensive/difficult to recover the data in a usable
format.

I hope this answers your question.

One other issue I have seen is where the drive on the control path gets a

and until each retry attempt times out the control path is unresponsive to

Version Interoperability...

Hi all,
Is there a rule of thumb for version interoperability ?
I'm prepping to upgrade my three TSM servers to 5.5.1.1 from 5.4.3.0

I'm going through and upgrading my clients to 5.5.*.* and found some W2K
boxes running 5.2.2 and some AIX 5.2 boxes running 5.2.2 .

Neither of those are listed as being supported by the client TSM version
of 5.5.
Any suggestions for interoperability before I start researching the last
TSM version that supported W2K and AIX 5.2.2?

Thanks,

The workaround I found was to make two passes through smitty installp.
The first time select and install the gskta filesets. The second time
through, select and install the client filesets.

I've installed this client level on AIX on three or four different
machines, and each time the workaround was required, and each time it
was succcessful.

The most recent documented limit value that I see is in Technote

That's something that should be in the Windows client manual, but
seems not to be.

Get rid of the double quote before the /filedev1 and the space after
the , and you should be fine.

What kind of filesystem are you on? shared=yes? are you very very

Re: Defining FILE Device class

2009-02-11 Thread Remco Post

in that case you want shared=no

shared=yes on file type devclasses is very rare, only supported on
sanergy and well, basically you don't want it.

Re: OS/390 or z/OS as Tivoli Clients

2009-02-11 Thread Mehdi Salehi
In open systems the total amount of data we need to backup is about
15TB and in z/OS about 5TB.
IBM does have Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS. What does this product
do? Does it backup DB2 data on z/OS?

Thanks

On 2/7/09, Wanda Prather wanda.prat...@jasi.com wrote:
You cannot back up DB2 for z/OS with TSM.
TSM does not understand traditional z/OS filesystems.
z/OS backup tools do not understand Windows and UNIX filesystems.

How many TSM servers you need depends on the amount of data you will back up
per day. One AIX server like a P550 is probably enough. But tell us how
many Gigabytes of data you need to back up per day, and we can give a better
 answer.

Whether you need more than 1 TSM server

Let me explain the case more precisely:
 - We do not have TSM now
 - Automatic backup should include: Six Oracle Databases on AIX
servers, four MS SQL server databases, DB2 for z/OS (two-node
 sysplex).
-TSM server could be on any of the following servers, but AIX is
 preferable.

We are in the phase of choosing TSM products and storage devices. What
do you recommend? Please let me know if one central TSM server and
one tape library are enough. If yes, which platform of TSM server
 suits best?

 Mehdi

database (Oracle, SQL) does not have a z/OS version.
