when TSM uses tape compression?

The values shown in the Read Formats and Write Formats fields of Query DRive output are the values that can be specified with the FORMAT parameter of the device class definition: they report capabilities, not what is in force at the moment. Your Devclass definition governs actual I/O

Re: when TSM uses tape compression?

Nothing happens to existing volumes: they remain as readable and writable as they always have been. TSM *should* have been writing the volumes to the maximal capabilities of the tape drive technology; and the tape drive senses the format used for partially written volumes so as to continue

Re: transfer rate terminology

2010-07-07 Thread Richard Sims
Burst rate refers to the transfer of data which the hardware component happens to have immediately at hand, as in a cache buffer. Sustained rate refers to the long-term average where the hardware has to also get data by seeking to a position on the medium and reading from it, which takes much

Re: transfer rate terminology

Essentially they are what they say. 'Sustained data rate' reflects more or less the average data rate over a period of time. Different systems compute it slightly differently (different average periods) but it's essentially what you can expect to be the supported average amount of data going
