I thought I'd throw this in too. Baclient ver 5.5 is not explicitly supported
with a 5.3 server.
There are two hotfixes listed for W2k3 clients with VSS errors also. This has

Look in the dsm.opt file, and see if it is using VSS to backup system state
objects, as opposed to backing up system state as a filesystem--
See if you have snapshotproviderimage specified as none-- if so remove it.

I have, in essence, throttled wintel clients by decreasing the
resourceutilization, decreasing the tcpwindowsize and tcpbuffsize and

Only if you allow them to truncate the log.
My preference is to allow TDP to truncate the log, and then use the /notruncate
(or something like that) switch in their Maint Plans I guess you could
try to sync the timing of the jobs if there is a quiet time when there will
be no data
