Yes, the Lites are a special build, 13.2.1.3 which Cambium hasn't made

I just wanted to throw out a heads-up for a Friday afternoon. What is
happening is that some of the SMs are displayed as registering in the AP

it would take you to the SM like normal still. This happened on a 2.4 450
and multiple 5GHz 450 APs. The signal doesn't seem to matter as some of
the SMs had signals as good as -67 with 29 SNR. Traffic would not pass
over the SM and if they had an additional VC for voice it wouldn't ever
establish. I also saw that overall signal levels of SMs were 5 db (give or
take) worse on 13.4. Additionally it seems that Lite APs (-APL) are not
letting me roll back to 13.2.1, or any other version for that matter. I am
glad I only upgraded a handful of APs because I'm excited for the new CoA
 feature.

Subject: [AFMUG] Static Nearby Lightning Issues

 Here goes...
We have a new 118' Super Titan Max tower that has been grounded per
manufacturers recommendations. Each leg is physically bonded (not
exothermically) to a 10' ground rod, all ground rods are then connected to
each other in a ring. The equipment cabinet is bonded to an 8' ground rod
and tied into the meter base grounding as well. The two ground rings are
then bonded to each other in 2 separate places.
With that said our issue has not been with the grounding, but with the
dissipation of static at the height of the antennas. We currently have had
the worst problems with the 3 Cyclone 2.4 antennas which are currently
located on masts at the top of the tower. We have also had issues with a
couple of the 5.7 Cyclones located below the top of the tower, but not as
frequently. The center-line of the 2.4 APs is 120' AGL, the height of the
tower is 118' AGL. We currently have WB-GigE-APC surge arrestors located in
the cabinet which is located 10 ft from the base of the tower.
After doing some research through various Cambium manuals and the
Motorola R56 manual, I have some idea what our issue is, but would like to
bounce those ideas off the community. My thought is that we neglected to put
surge arrestors at 50' to 75' intervals (as recommended by the Motorola R56
manual) and 1 at the top for use in thunderstorm areas. Also we may need to
lower the APs to a minimum of 2ft below the top of the tower (per the Cambium
 manuals for various antenna types).
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. What have you done to
 mitigate this problem? Etc...

Stop the FCC from making small ISPs comply with Title II public utility rules.
This is not Net Neutrality. It is a power grab to give the big phone/cable

OK FINE! Let it happen. Tax every MoFo internet service out there to be fair.
Then take all your new tax money and split it evenly to ALL OF US! Yep not
going to happen either. I guess it's time to hire Steve Coran to beat them for
my share!

It's cambium and works well. I understand a lot of guys are now going to it.
Question though is the new AC gear worth waiting on at this point ??

My complaints are...

Wish it had alignment tone. We are so use to our easy breezy alignment tool
with FSK and OFDM. Going to the led lights was a step back I guess to help
keep costs down. Who here has tried to align a KP REFLECTOR like that? That's
dumb. Give me my headset back so I can listen to music. Some of the UI loads
slow and is missing some nice features we see in the other cambium gear. Sync
and throughput is good. Force 110 dish is small...wish it was bigger to add
the db loss from taking Rockets down.

Sorry I like carrier grade but without the price. So I am crying about it

Tower A - 26 miles away - UBNT 3.65ghz Rocket M5 AND a Mikrotik RB912 5 Ghz

 Please allow me to clarify.

The Force 110 uses the Connectorized UnSync'd unit with the two 10/100 FE
 ports.

The Force 110 PTP uses the Connectorized GPS Sync'd unit with the
single GigE port that supports 802.3af PoE in addition to proprietary PoE.
GPS capabilities will be disabled (but the radio can still use the on board
GPS chip to track satellites and provide coordinates).

The 2ms latency is achieved purely through software changes in Release 2.4
and will apply to both products.

Subject: [AFMUG] Working with Crown Castle vs. American Tower

We have 3 Crown Castle towers that we have had since 2003. Started around
$ 500 per month for 4 sectors and 2 BHs back then. Rent escalations plus
now having 6 sectors on it now, have brought the rent up to around $
1000/month. We are exploring our other options for new towers.

Two of the ideal locations are Crown Castle sites and I called them. My CC
rep sent me all the standard fee sheets - $ 5K and up etc. and high rents.

Has anyone got any precedence for pricing with CC where they have become
competitive to someone like American Tower and their 4WISP program? A.T.
starts at $ 500 for 2 3ft BHs and 4 Sectors. A premium tower, as they call
it, can have a $ 100 to $ 150 uptick, but that still seems reasonable.

 Thoughts?

[AFMUG] UBNT 24 Bounce

2014-11-13 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Comm. Inc via Af
Guys,

Seeing a 24ghz bouncing and throwing low bandwidth numbers. Session and
throughput graphs look great when up. Cable pairs are like 26-29 snr.

Ericsson said an LTE sector started acting up. Clearly different RF but seems
odd.

New terminations and power supplies. No luck. Bypass surge protection same
result

2014-11-11 Thread Tyson Burris @ Internet Comm. Inc via Af
For WISPs, you need to focus on the OSHA content related to construction. I
require OHSA 10, at a minimum, for all employees now, including CPR CERT.
Everyone in our industry should be doing a pre climb safety meeting as well but
I have yet to see ANYONE do it.

I'm not an expert here at all but that's what what I was taught from the
cellular side.

They are still testing and tweaking firmware. They are not vaporware and are
actively updating the Beta community. I can't say much more yet but that they
are continually updating those of us in the Beta group and are working on
tweaking the software to be as reliable as possible before releasing the
product. Give them 1-2 more months and we should see good things.

I would call two years very short term because my investing horizon is 20+
years. And I'm already (mostly) retired. (Consulting gigs keep cropping
up...) If I were still in my 20s, my horizon would be 50 years.

 Take a look at this:

and now imagine you are the advisor who put me (and no doubt other clients)
into AAPL in September 2012. You can either call up those clients and say
good news, after 2 years of staring at a loss, you can finally take a nice
profit and invest in something else. Or you can say buy another ticket and
 take another roller coaster ride.

Besides, after years of almost getting negative interest on fixed income
(in Europe they actually pay banks to park money), there are finally some
options in stocks that pay dividends and even bond funds that are
worthwhile putting 25 or 30% of your money in, making sure they are short
maturity because their value will go down once the Fed starts raising
 interest rates.

But as far as ignoring short term stock market swings, I’m not sure I’d
call 2 years short term. And if you look at the chart, AAPL looks exactly
like it did 2 years ago. Sure, it could go up. But let’s face it, what
did they announce. A couple phablets which are really just catching up to
competition, and a smartwatch for next year. Samsung is already mocking
the iPhone 6+ in their Galaxy Note 4 ads, and how sure are you that a $349
smartwatch will be the next must-have gadget? And iPad sales have slowed
because once people have one, they don’t trade up to the next version like
they do phones, and a lot of them are WiFi only and not tied to a carrier 2
 year cycle.

I only agree with your investment advisor if you're within 2-5 years of
retirement and you will be relying on those assets to live on. Otherwise,
he/she is steering you wrong. IMO, of course. Your example of AAPL
illustrates exactly why. You need to totally ignore short term stock
market swings, and keep some cash on hand for buying when plunges like 2008
happen. BTW this takes nerves of steel.

FWIW, my investment advisor got me out of AAPL, and advises decreasing

evidently feels stocks have run up to the point where they are getting
 risky.

Regarding AAPL, I had quite a paper loss at one time, finally recovered
and made a nice profit, but it looked pretty grim for awhile. The myth
was it would only go one way - up. Problem with Apple is they always have
to hit it out of the park, merely having a good quarter is a
disappointment. It must be like being a magician, but if you pulled a
rabbit out of your hat last night, tonight you need to pull a lion out of
