If lossy or lossless is crisp an A Priori or A Posteriori definition cannot be
determined unless the complexity of all compressors are partitioned but the
decompression results are not known until execution on all possible data...
which is impossible.

FWIW. So I suspect they're fuzzy and not mutually exclusive.

No it didn't. Cyc was a big lesson on the failure of rule based AI. Lenat
had no idea how many rules are needed to implement AI. Now 35 years later
we know it's more than a million. There was no learning algorithm and no
language model.

Your phone is smart because it can see, hear, sense location and movement,
understand language, recognize faces and fingerprints, and access all the
world's knowledge via WiFi, cellular, and Bluetooth connections to the
internet. None of that technology existed in 1984 when Cyc was started, and
there was no way they could have implemented it even if they could have
imagined it.

Well you could have a compressor that starts off lossless then intelligently
decides that  it needs to operates faster due to some criteria and then
compress particular less-important data branches lossily. Then it would fall
into the middle ground no?  A hybrid.

And vice versa, on decompression a compressor could switch from a lossless
decompression to a lossy. For example if it is required to execute in less time
available then spits out a lossy best result.

See? all kinds of good stuff here!

I agree with WOM...

Lossless relies on a mathematical algorithm to re-constitute the data,
compression is achieved through a re-coding/ translation/ more efficient use of
the storage/ transmission medium. Lossy relies on embedded knowledge within the
decoder to re-constitute the original data.

>  It's there, all the information of the original results are thee, it really

I could compress the whole of the top paragraph too... 123.  Given just 123 you
would never arrive/ decode that paragraph without the stored knowledge of what
123 actually means.

since this forum is getting that trashy cause we didn't get banned, and now we
get what we deserve, i've got another trashy thing to add.

Everything everyone is coming up with is worth something, only a supernatural
act can stop man as a whole from developing an a.i. on the level of a quite a
successful virus that can tackle its environment quite well.     But?  why now?
Why not happen ages ago?   I think something from the super-natural has always
been happening to stop man from "over-tackling" his environment with self
reduplicating instant menial work machines,   so if I suddenly disappear,   you
can probably guess god handled me, if you were to think like me, just like how
he handled everyone else that thinks simply enough to actually get it to happen.

It all disappears,   if you over-achieve, god will sort you out.   And god
prefers dummies that don't hit super civilizational efficiency, cause they dont
cause waves that make the whole thing not work at all.

John, now that you've elaborated some more, I think you're just trying to say:
there may exist an algorithm that performs lossy compression in the general
case, but achieves lossless compression on certain specialized datasets. As far
as I know, that's possible. It doesn't create some middle ground between lossy
and lossless compression, though. It does one or the other, depending on what
data you feed in. By definition, lossless = not lossy. The compressed result
either contains all of the information that was in the original, or does not
contain all of the information that was in the original.

The lossless compressed result is not the same file anymore, it doesn't contain
all the information therefore. It just so happens to re-generate back the exact
file. Some lossless decompressors take longer to decompress also. And Lossy
(when expect all data to return) takes very long - maybe years before someone
reinvents your missing data. It's there, all the information of the original
results are thee, it really is, it just takes longer.
