It depends on your goal or intent. A certification is useful - you can get a
paying job at Google even, and using a course to learn is not bad at all. It
may be slower than mentoring. You can try both ways, one at a time though so
you can focus.

Well I agree that having a mentor would be better than researching by myself.
But one can't get a certification through a mentor, obviously. One can,
however, have a mentor while at the same time striving for an official

Learning Tree has a number of IT certifications. But their courses cost money
and they don't have any beginner classes for people who are new to computer
science.
