BUS: Dear Agora [attn. Registrar]

2022-05-01 Thread Aspen via agora-business
Note for clarity: if you just want to understand the game effect of
this message, please jump to the end. Or, you know, you could read
this long message I wrote. That works too!

Dear Agora,

We need to talk.

Things have been kind of rough for a while. See, I'm not enjoying
spending time with you as much as I used to. I'm not *entirely* sure
why that is, but I'll explore a few reasons. This is going to be a
rambly vent, so prepare yourself.

I'm really exasperated by this increase in finger pointings. I've
expressed this before. I know that I'm not the only one, even if I am
the one complaining the loudest: I've heard privately from other
officers who are also frustrated, but don't feel comfortable publicly
complaining about it.

Being an officer used to be fun. If an officer was late occasionally,
or even often-ish, it was no big deal. It was kind of all upsides,
honestly. The pressure was mostly from yourself, and the rest of it
was social. Now that you have someone looking over your shoulder to
make sure you're exactly on time each week, being an officer is less
fun.

The problem is, of course, that it seems that people being late did
bother others, and they ended up keeping quiet about it. I'm not
really sure what to do about that.

Sometimes I wish we just didn't care about deadlines and let everyone
be late when they needed to. There could still be limits, but "one
missed week is no big deal, just don't be late two in a row" seems
like a pretty decent policy. I don't know if this is actually a good
idea, but I'm throwing it out as a starting point for discussion.

And yes, I am still kinda annoyed that I got a finger pointed at me
for an error. Every officer makes errors, and it doesn't feel like
that should be penalized. It's not even really avoidable, especially
if you publish a draft and no one catches it.

Oh, drafts! You'll notice I haven't published drafts for the last few
weeks. That's because publishing a draft and waiting for responses
would have made my report late by a day or two, and I would have
gotten a finger point. In the past, I would quite possibly have just
missed out on the pay in order to make sure my report is accurate. But
now, given that I don't have time to report till Saturday, I don't
have a ton of options.

Yes, I realize there are models where you just expect that getting
blots is part of existing. No, I have not transitioned over to such a
model just because people started pointing fingers more.

Relatedly, social convention in Agora has kind of gone down the drain
in general. It used to be that we could have boundaries that weren't
just contained in rules, and they were rarely broken. I'm not saying
that's entirely gone, but it feels like it's less true. I'd really
prefer for people to ask whether they SHOULD do things, even if they
MAY and CAN do them. I know people still care about how others feel,
but I think we've kind of... divorced that from gameplay, I guess. And
I don't like that. I don't have examples, beyond the finger pointing
thing, but I feel like they're out there something.

I have something of a chronic problem, where I tend to battle for the
old way of doing things practically alone. Which isn't healthy for me,
for you, or for anyone else. Hell, I feel like a dick - I probably am
a dick. I'm always the one complaining about change. That is the role
I have claimed for myself. I do not know if it is good for someone to
hold that role, or if I'm doing it correctly.

I do it because I'm afraid of change. I've avoided taking any breaks
for years because I was afraid things would change in my absence. I've
been worried about getting Promotor back if I ever resigned, and
that's probably the biggest thing. But also about rules changes, and
just... change. If I like things the way they are, I try to stop them
from changing too much. Which probably isn't a good trait, honestly.

I'm often more opinionated and argumentative than is actually helpful
- though I console myself that I am not the only Agoran to have this
trait, I am one of the worse ones.

The truth of the matter, Agora, is that I'm tired. A lot of that has
to do with health concerns outside of the game. My sleep schedule has
been a wreck since I moved to college, and my health also sucks
generally.

A lot of it is also that I'm frustrated though. Agora, I've already
told you why I'm frustrated by you. But a lot of my frustration is
probably just as much that I'm not working out for you right now as
that you're not working out for me. While I'm not going to "it's not
you, it's me" you, I think it's probably both of us.

So, now that I've conveyed all my grievances, let me say what I want
to do. I think I've been together with you for too long, and I think I
need a break. You've tired me out and frustrated me, and I've tired
myself out and frustrated myself, and I need some distance to recover.

This has been venty, in part because I am literally required to
express my grievances and reproach for

The following is a contract, which I create and join.

This contract is entitled Aspen's Executor.

Any person CAN become a party to this contract by consenting to it.

Aspen CAN transfer assets from this contract by announcement.

If Aspen has specifically given eir public consent for a transfer or
trade, any party CAN transfer assets from this contract by
announcement, provided e does so to effectuate the permitted transfer
or trade.

Aspen CAN terminate this contract by announcement.

I transfer each of my coins to Aspen's Executor. I transfer each of my
legislative, voting, justice, and win cards to Aspen's Executor. I
transfer each of my pendants, votives, blot-b-gones, and winsomes to
Aspen's Executor. I transfer each of my stamps to Aspen's Executor
(this is allowed by a CFJ from a few years ago that I never
particularly liked). For each class of liquid assets I have at least one of,
I transfer each asset I have of that class to Aspen's Executor. And,
for good measure, I transfer all of my assets to Aspen's Executor.

The most natural reading of this rule is that "any other player"

I number the above CFJ 3961 and assign it to Murphy.

dictionary.com gives these definitions for "any", among others:

  1) one, a, an, or some; one or more without specification or
identification: "If you have any witnesses, produce them. Pick out
 any six you like."

  2) whatever or whichever it may be: "cheap at any price."

i.e. "for some" vs "for all". Game custom, common sense, and best
interests all favor the latter interpretation as the clear intent of the
rule in question.

Last week's Treasuror's report [1] listed ais523 with the largest number
of winsomes (46) of any single player. Reviewing a-b and a-o archives,
ais523 only lost 5 between then and the alleged win [2], so e still had
41 and secretsnail needed at least 61.

I judge FALSE.

Gratuitous: I checked a couple of dictionaries. Their consensus seems
to be that "any" when used as a determiner is ambiguous, and can mean
either "at least some positive quantity/amount of" or "every",
depending on context.

As such, I think both secretsnail's and Jason's readings of the rule
are compatible with its wording, so this is going to come down to an
R217 tiebreak (which I expect Jason's reading to win).

Arguments:

{

The most natural reading of this rule is that "any other player"
includes all players. Contrast with "another player", "some other
player", or "someone else", which would give rise to Secretsnail9's reading.

Even if Secretsnail9's reading is plausible (which I very much contest),
it at most isn't the unambiguously clearest reading, allowing the R217
factors to be applied, which very clearly favor this not working.

}

Evidence:

{

Rule 2621/8 (Power=1.0)
VP Wins

If a player has at least 20 more Winsomes than any other player, e
CAN Take Over the Economy by announcement, provided no person has
won the game by doing so in the past 30 days.

When a player takes over the economy, e wins the game. Four days
after such a win occurs, all Cards and all Products are destroyed.
  Then, the winds die down.

Purported win message
(https://mailman.agoranomic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/private/agora-business/2022-May/049066.html):

{

I pay a set of 4 Win Cards to gain 10 Winsomes.

I now have 21 winsomes.

I take the following action 5 times:
{
If I have any blots, I expunge a blot from myself by paying a fee of 1
blot-b-gone.
}

The above 5 actions likely don't do anything unless someone blotted me
recently.

I Take Over the Economy. (I have "at least 20 more Winsomes than *any other
player*", that player being Telna.)

I become a candidate for Prime Minister.

Platform: If G. doesn't want the office, I'll happily take it.

I initiate an election for Prime Minister [my term is up].

I become a candidate to ensure the election is contested, but in the
Agoran tradition of PM office transition I encourage other candidates and
do not wish to win.
