I don't know. I think that the problem depends on the new snd-aoa
series modules. They are not needed with snd-powermac that can handle
the i2s bus by

I tried with gutsy 7.10: same. Actually I was only able to boot the
kernel, but that was enough for seeing the distortion. BootX crashed if
I tried to add the initrd, maybe it has grown over some limit.

B). Then I decided to put in a USB PCI card: X would not start. It
complained about INVALID IO ALLOCATION, it thought it should use an area
allocated already by the USB

Did some more testing: as the frame buffer text mode is distorted on
these machines, it may be a bad idea to try using the fbdev driver for
X. But it may give a hint. I tried it: well, the whole system hangs. To
be more precise: X just dies, leaving the attached log. The screen
remains black. And
Ok, I solved it.
Not sure why, but I had to set /system/gstreamer/0.8/default/audiosink=esdsink.
