Well as no fix is forthcoming I decided that most pragmatic thing to do
was uninstall Chromium and just installed Google Chrome from the Google
website.
Not an open source solution but I just needed a solution that works.

Thank you for the help. I tried the legacy fglrx driver through the PPA
route you posted. It the driver loads but crashes more unity and
cinnamon.
I guess I need to wait until either the next release or maybe AMD will

At the moment I'm running in SOFTWARE mode because this open source
driver doesn't work for me, and ATI's binary legacy driver is
incompatible with the version of Xorg in ubuntu stable.

It's just I note that it should work fine in Chromium with a bit of tweaking:
Yep, what you've described is completely accurate; the message is
harmless and doesn't interfer with normal operations.
There was a small (and totally unrelated) bug in the init-scripts
package which has now been fixed that caused my problem.

In the interim is there any known work-around for this?
It's a bit of a jip because my / file system initially mounts as read only.
I guess I'll just roll udev back to the previous version and rebuild
the kernel against that then unless anyone has any other advice?

I just feel really let down about the whole platform now. I was drawn
to Android initially because of it's open-source ethos. In practice
however, I may have just as well got an iPhone for all the

I can't install nvidia-glx as that is looking for 180.44 kernel modules
This seems bizarre as the package nvidia-kernel-2.6.26-2-amd64
provides 173.xx modules and not 180.44 modules!
What is the purpose then of the 173.xx kernel modules if nothing can
seem to use them?

I've noticed that the battery widget in KDE 4 that sits in the taskbar misleads
the users about when a battery is still being charged or not.
Take this example with how 'kpowersave' from KDE 3.5 had more user friendly
behaviour:

I'm using squeeze with the kernel package linux-image-amd64. This drags
in linux-image-2.6-amd64, which in turn has installed the package
linux-image.2.6.26-2-amd64.
During installation of the 2.6.26-2 kernel a couple of
the bug be closed :)
