I'm not sure why people in Canada can grow Austin roses while I in Colorado can only grow Canadian roses. Canadian Explorer roses and the Parkland series are the most cold hardy roses I know. They were developed by the Canadian Experimental stations there--similar to the U.S's Cooperative Extens

I don't know how many alpines you'll find at the UC Botanical Gardens at Berkeley, but it's an amazing place to go! They have the best collection of CA natives, and lots of bulbs from other parts of the world, too. Just thinking about it makes me wish I could spend a week, or a lifetime there.
