Re: [Alpine-l] IRG 83 November

2016-11-24 Thread Ted Wilcox
Thanks for a most interesting article and fantastic pictures, even the one that
drew an expletive!  Whilst I have little knowledge of bees or wasps I try to
encourage them both in my garden and allotment.  Although the wasps that built
a nest in one of my allotment compost heaps did cause some problems with my
later apples,  although they never stung anyone.  I assume that in southern
England we have a similar diversity of bees to those across the water.
Thanks again for a full and interesting article.
Regards Ted Wilcox

Excellent news that IRG will continue! Although too distant for direct
participation, I am an enthusiastic member and love the SRGC activities.
Wednesday is "bulb day" with Ian Young's ~wonderful "Bulb Log Diary"
So much fine work!

All the best to Alpine-l folks everywhere for a fine and flower-filled
2016,

Thanks to Shirley for her kind words - others have also contacted us
 privately to express their

appreciation of the International Rock Gardener.

*I am happy to say that the IRG will continue - it is simply that we
have reached 5 years of issues - when we really

only began with a one year experiment and are celebrating that.
*

*As long as there are generous contributors we hope the IRG will
continue!!

*

* Kind regards,

I would like to thank Maggie Young for all her time, effort and the diligence
she put into 72 issues of IRG. They were each
beautifully done with a wealth of information. Also thanks to Zdenek Zvolanek
and Ian Young and others who contributed. It will be missed.
Her two issues inspired our Minnesota members to visit the fabulous private
gardens in the Czech Republic.

Thank you so much. Beyond lovely. Too old and too far south for my own
garden any more, but I really enjoyed this issue.

[Alpine-l] IRG 62 February 2015

2015-02-27 Thread Youngs Aberdeen

New Issue : IRG 62 of February 2015

 http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2015Feb261424987169IRG62.pdf

At this time of year in the northern hemisphere our thoughts are buoyed by
the increasing evidence of spring flowers and many of these are "bulbs"

in the widest sense. The passion and fashion for Galanthus continues unabated

so we thought a report from landscape architect and galanthophile

Hagen Engelmann from Cottbus, on some of his favourite snowdrops,

which are not "just white" was appropriate.

Christophe Ruby from the Hof Botanical Garden makes a plea in his article

for more enthusiasm for a plant he considers to be too often overlooked for use
in our gardens.

Finally, Wim Boens, the Belgian plantsman so active for the VRV provides an
update to his

previous article on the Genus Eranthis.

Yes, this is an issue of IRG heavy with "bulbs" - if you feel this to be an
overload then we invite you to submit a piece on a plant that interests you!

[Alpine-l] IRG and a long awaited Spring

2013-03-27 Thread Youngs
Thank you Anne. This year there seem to be an awful lot more of us than usual
desperate to have Spring "properly" arrive - so many false alarmsso far that
many of us are giving up hope. When it does arrive we will be truly grateful
for its benefits, I'm sure!M zanspi at aol.comMaggi,
Yet another spectacular issue of IRG. Loved Ian Christie's article, especially
to see Mertensia maritima in situ.
No wonder I can't keep that one when I see where it grows. Also the cordalis
pictures were so beautiful.
The photography is always so excellent. I feel I've had a preview of spring,
which I hear is supposed to show
up here one of these days.
