I had the same problem with alsa-0.5 , with alsa-0.9 it works fine ( oss
(i.e. mpg123) and native i.e. ardour )
use envy24control gtk mixer ( alsa-tools or utils ? ). It is a bit
complicated than AC97-like, but give you a perfect control other the card.
