Can anyone help me with the use of multiple soundcards for playback?

As I am trying to use 18 channels for wavefield synthesis, I bought 3
cheap 5.1 soundcards with the C-Media CM8738

(1) what do soundcore and snd do?
I assume one provides the ALSA api, but what about the other?
soundcore provides functions for allocating OSS devices, so it's used by
both the OSS drivers and by ALSA's OSS emulation.
snd is the basic module of the ALSA framework.

Hey, folks. Got a weird one, here.
I've got an ALC850 with an optical SPDIF out, running to my receiver. I'm

channels and playback 4 channels (front rear) simultaneously with
jack (using qjackctl to get jack going)
My sound card works fine in 2 channel capture, 2 channel playback using hw0.
The driver doesn't let me use 4 channels
All,
First... I'm a newbie to the list... sorry if I'm not following proper
protocol. I CAN be taught.
I have a Diamond Multimedia Monster Sound MX400 soundcard. It runs
great with the automatically chosen snd-es1968 driver. This is also
the driver suggested on the ALSA Soundcard Matrix.
