BTW, I failed miserably to install the 0.9.8 drivers, and I
have no clue why it doesn't work: I get no error messages.

and alsaconf phases, but then when I want to play something,
either nothing happens, or I get back some crazy error messages.

BTW, sndconfig reports some errors in the via82cxxx_audio, like
