I theorize that alsa mixer set some parameter in the chip. Anyway, I deleted the kernel source, repatched, starting from scratch, and recompiled as a module. Also, I deleted some /etc/alsa and/or modules files that I suspected. Then I added myself to the audio group, and also deleted ~/.xmms,
