Thanx for the help. Indeed there was a grave problem with the machine.
The '/tmp' filesystem got currupted and with it '/tmp/amanda' directory,
which I wrote you about Thursday. The only way to fix this was to recreate
the filesystem. I don't know the current state of amanda error

It will work fine with 2.4.1p1 (I still have some old clients here).
However, don't bother. You have a **serious** problem on that machine
