i put the DIP switches the way they were supposed to be, and added the
relevant lines to the (solaris) st.conf file.. ;*) i am suspicious
that the st.conf definitions were key. kernel debug logging stopped
showing the device timeouts.

did is to take a gnu tar 1.15 src rpm and
rpmbuild --rebuild that, then rpm -U the resulting package.
speaking of building from src, i have been using 2.4.5 + split/span
for my amanda tapehost for a while now, and am very pleased about it..
