in the source code does not include a log_templ. The
amavisd.conf-sample does have an entirely commented out log_templ, and
the amavisd.conf-default indicates:

I just noticed that two almost identical amavisd-new installations have
wildly different memory usages.
The only difference is that one system is i386, whereas the other amd64.
On i386, top reports:
