When I was a youngster my friend Paul had an old 78 player and a pile of
records, however his favourite was Jerry Lee Lewis 'Great balls of fire' he
used to play this on the old wind up player at around 08.00 in the morning
every day for months until it wore out, you could hear this echoing over

Larry,
The 80 RPM records were made for the Edison players, which
used a real diamond stylus. They are ruined by playing on
a Victor or other player with a steel "needle".

They're "acetate" discs, 16" OD for a 15 minute transcription (33 1/3rpm) in
broadcast service, (12" & less was used for domestic recordings). Some went up
to 17.5" OD
Recordings were not great at less than 6" diameter hence the big diameters.
Used a cellulose lacquer on the aluminium platter
On sorta the same (off-) topic:
Anyone know what kind of luck I might have finding some (affordable) jazz
and/or blues in the old Edison 2-minute wax cylinder format, and where to
look?
At the AWA conference last August I bought a nice old Edison cylinder
phonograph in the flea market. The seller
street from me.

Those aluminum center discs were not those sold to the public with
artist' content, rather they were the recordable type found in radio
stations and sometimes in home recorders.

I have several test circuits I salvaged before they hit the dumpster. These
were built in the late 50's, early 60's. They were in homebuilt Bud type
miniboxes, and the constructor, Fritz, W4NTO said the aluminum came from old
records. They melted the plastic off the disk and a shiny aluminum
ication!

Hi guys, Maybe a little off topic but I need a
couple 78 records preferably big band type. I just
got a nice am/sw radio and record player with a 15
inch speaker that is 4 feet tall and about 20
inches wide. Had the turntable fixed and cartridge
fixed so all is working and no records.
Thanks,
