A satellite with 25 channels would probably help. LOL This is why
a lot of the old guard satellite ops wish for the translator days
with 100-KHz of bandwidth and CW/SSB. But I do NOT want to start up
a RANT on this -everyone knows this.
Single channel FM repeater satellites will always be s

Having been a ham for over fifty years and having worked most modes of
operation, including chasing DX and even satellite back in 1979, I totally
agree that working AO-51 can get frustrating. However, if you think the mess
on AO-51 is bad, try working a rare dx expedition sometime. Talk about

Hi Ed,
Drew's reply covered it well. The 435-IF would be my first recommendation, and
his thought about putting a preamp outside, downconverter inside is a fine one.

We only run V/S and L/S, with V/S being far more common. I'd use the 435
IF. I'd also put a preamp at the feed, and the downconverter in the
shack where it can be easily swapped if needed.

Why couldn't AMSAT conduct some type of OO program? The offending operators
get a courtesy post card. AO-51 is a nightmare. Sometimes you hear the same
ops on each pass calling one another. If you want a decent qso, go on AO-7 etc
and free up some AO-51 downlinks.

Running S-band is very difficult to do when AO-51 is seeing eclipses;
the S-band transmitter is not controlled by the transmitter power
management software like the U-band transmitters! It is a much more
manual and labor intensive mode to run in.

Another part of the solution would be to operate AO-51 in V/S or L/S more
often.
