or kopete to test the setup of the webcam - obviously not the best

developers...
Second, you can get a preview of your webcam using the webcam assistant...
You will find it in other preferences...

Yes, Tommy is right, there will be an audio/video assistant for 0.97 . For
now, you can configure your webcam using the existing interface. You can
reach it in 3 ways:
1) Preferences - Others - Configure webcam
2) chatwindow: Edit menu - editavsettings
3) Using the Ctrl+N shortcut
