Are you talking about forms of type View? I recall creating system
field equivalents on view forms in the past but it does appear that
dev studio doesn't support that. For regular/join/display only forms
you would never have been able to create system fields in the past.

I do not believe that was ever a feature. If a field has an Entry-Mode of
System it cannot be changed. You can change a a non System field from
Required to Optional and vice-versa.
