Yes Artifactory needs a database to run. The one provided by default is Java
DB also known as Derby DB. With this, no database installation or DB
connection configuration are needed.
If you need a permanent view of your artifacts, you can activate incremental
backup that will provide a clear view

Are you going though a network proxy when deploying or have apache in front
of your Tomcat installation?
Did you install Artifactory on a remote file-system maybe?
What do you mean by custom tomcat?
