There is another side to the child labour issue. There was some report that the rescued children had no regret for working in such factories. In an over populated country like India, where every household has many mouths to feed from one income, children has to work. For example in Kashmir children are actually apprentices who become master crafts person once they become old hands. Now in a country like India, if they are not put to work, they will either turn into urchins, vagabonds, beggars or drug addicts, If govt. wants to seriously abolish child labor, education, social infrastructure has to come first so that these children are kept occupied gainfully. Otherwise mere rescuing them from factories will not serve any purpose. Re: [Assam] [NorthEastIndia] Mukesh Ambani - richest person in the world
There cannot be any issues in Mukesh Ambani becoming the richest man in the whole world. Someone has to be. The same order that catapults someone to unbelievable wealth, pushes others to child labour. I have been told that some changes are coming in the world banking system by January and the surge in the Indian Markets is a consequence of that. I do not haver any insider information and so I do not know whether it is correct. Mukesh Ambani happens to be in the right place at the right time. Whether child labour is good or bad is an ethical issue. The position a person takes in this respect would depend upon his values. That is a very individual decision. But the question is: what is the generally accepted view ? It may be correct or it may be wrong. Only efflux of time would settle these types of isues. I completely agree with Manoj. The government will have to be proactive in this issue. In the mean time, if we are a bit compassionate to our domestic helps, and help their children to get an education (at least to bee able to finish high school, if not college), it would be like we doing our share, while the government is doing the responsibility for the mass. Re: [Assam] [NorthEastIndia] Mukesh Ambani - richest person in the world
The newitem on child labor was highlighted not on the merits or demerits of this practise. This news in contrast to Ambanis richness was to illustrate the mainstream media's obsession with a false sense of development and progress. Even with rather flawed and manipulative indexes, the Planning commission estimates a quarter of the country below the poverty line. If the average per capita per day expenditure of Rs.11.60 is doubled, we have a staggering 80% below the poverty line. India having the highest maternal mortality rate, really low human development index and more such news seldom occupy main pages of the dailies. In most cases these issues are not an insurmountable problem, if the government puts in an effort to solve it. The Indian government effective October 10 2006 , enacted a law to ban domestic work and some other forms of labor by children under age 14. However there is hardly any political will to initiate the implementation. The mainstream media have a tendency to highlight India shining while putting these issues on the back burner. Many times this obsession masks serious social and economic issues that concern many communities and the country as a whole . India rising is not a false story, a tour of the country showcases the growing prowess of India. India now has the 5th largest forex reserve ($261 Bn) rising @ 4.5 Bn per week, in another will move to 4th spot. On PPP parameter, has the 4th largest economy. This year's outlook for growth has been pegged at 8.5%.The population BPL is decreasing consistently. Literacy rate is going up, and other social indices are also improving fast. At long last India seems to have discovered the formula to progress fast. Definitely later half of 21st century will belong to India- then probably our expats will sing 'jahan daal daal par suneki chiriya karti hai basera, woh bharat desh hai mera' :) Businessmen don't hoard the money they make, it is circulated to create more wealth, investment, employment, export and quite a portion gets percolated to the bottom. Ambanis, Narayanmurthys, Mittals do business with an attitude of abundance, they can think big and plan execute well. We should not forget that 1/5 of humanity lives in India; which has la disproportionate share of the land. I think we are doing fine as a young country, who was exploited for centuries. Corruption, poverty, etc etc will go away over a period of time. Vive l'Inde. Mukesh Ambani is the richest person. Mr. Pachauri got the peace nobel. We got to be proud. But in our town, we have to queue up from the morning till night to get a cylinder of cooking gas and that too at prices unaffordable for the middle class.(What was Rs.300/- has become Rs.500/-, comaparatively speaking) The cost of piped water per unit has been hiked by more than two times (What was Rs.8/- per unit has become Rs.18/-, comparatively speaking). The second richest is a Mexican which sends millions into USA - so byy this index the richest people will come from the poorest countries --maybe the next one would be from Sudan or Somalia or Congo. Re: [Assam] [NorthEastIndia] Mukesh Ambani - richest person in the world
Hi Ramada Ambanis have done a lot for their home state, and home city (Jamnagar). When we studied near Jamnagar in early 80s; it was a sleepy town. Now it has the world's largest refinery. They have changed the landscape, and the area is very rich now. Also Ambanis have made millions of their shareholders wealthy. Mukesh operates CSR through Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation. We must also not forget that, most of this wealth is notional. The moment he goes to encash his shares, value will go down. Happy to note that richest person across centuries have been Indians. For long during 20th century, I think Nizam of Hyderabad was the richest person in the World. During Jahangir's time some 'baniya' was Surat was the richest man in the world. -mkd On Oct 30, 2007 11:00 AM, Ram Sarangapani [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Let us also not forget that both Bill Gates/Melinda Gates Warren Buffett have given a big portion of their wealth to numerous charities. Re: [Assam] [NorthEastIndia] Mukesh Ambani - richest person in the world
Let us also not forget that both Bill Gates/Melinda Gates Warren Buffett have given a big portion of their wealth to numerous charities. Could that be the big reason that their net worth is not as high as one would have expected? Wonder how much Ambani or Slim have done for charity? May be they have, but I think the Gates' and Buffett have done more than their fair share, and are certainly have a much higher networth (at least in my mind):) IMHO: In the end that's what counts. Indian 'slave' children found making low-cost clothes destined for Gap Child workers, some as young as 10, have been found working in a textile factory in conditions close to slavery to produce clothes that appear destined for Gap Kids, one of the most successful arms of the high street giant. Speaking to The Observer, the children described long hours of unwaged work, as well as threats and beatings. The discovery of the children working in filthy conditions in the Shahpur Jat area of Delhi has renewed concerns about the outsourcing by large retail chains of their garment production to India, recognised by the United Nations as the world's capital for child labour.
