S685 set turned up the other day and have had a good chance to try it out ...
Voice quality is definitely superior to the M3 though I guess that will be
addressed in the M9 with G722 support.

Impressions of the Siemens phone :-

Pros

Great Voice Quality
Easy to configure
Good range
Ability to transfer address books
Good build quality

Cons

Keys feel fiddly
Keys response time when dialling is very slow
When call connection is made a audible beep is heard which cuts of the first .5
second of a VM message
DTMF does not all transfer correctly

On the whole it seems a very capable phone and very well laid out. For my
personal needs it just does not feel right with how the keys react.

Hopefully the M9 will be released very shortly so I can make a comparison.

Thanks to everyone's replies.

Best Regards,

I agree with the response time on the keys, it does seem to be quite
slow but I have got used to that now - after 1 1/2 years :-)

Will the M9 also have an analogue interface? That is one of the main
reasons for my choosing this phone. It's a great dual home/home-office
phone because of that.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

The feature set of the M9 does not appear to be available anywhere yet,
unfortunately as it is being released late this month, so not sure about the
analogue interface. Personally I have a TDM card in my Asterisk server so that
feature in the phone is not on my list of requirements.

I type pretty quick on a handset so the slow response does hinder me a bit
which is why it went on my cons list. The Siemens is a good phone as I expect,
hopefully ;), the M9 will be.

As always I guess it will come down to personal preference.

I just hope when the M9 is released it does not have all the issues the M3 had
when it was first launched.

Best Regards,

Gordon,

do you mean the repeater on the M9 ?

I know what you mean about the price though I don't mind paying a little extra
if the product is worth it. My issue I have with the M3s is that voice
occasionally breaks up on even internal calls; no way to download/upload the
configuration of the gateway (Snom have said this is for security !?!?); You
can upload a directory but cannot download so if adding a new contact from one
of the handsets you the have to update you central CSV :(; No mixture of common
or handset address books.

I should get the S685 tomorrow; so once the M9 is out will buy one to compare
the two. From what I have seen of the M9 (small picture) it does look like
they have improved the styling and buttons over the M3 which is a good start.

Cheers,

Actually, the S685IP does have a headset jack. It's effectively
identical to the S675IP, but with the addition of Bluetooth.

Hi Alan,

Yes I actually found your review when I went hunting ... Very informative
indeed :) By all accounts from what I have read the sound quality appears to be
far superior to the M3s due to wideband (G722). Will be interesting to see how
they perform across the VoipTalk accounts I have with IAX.

Anybody using them with VoipTalk and what is the best codec to use ?

Your ability to use G.722 is limited to calling other phones that are
G.722, and they typically on when the call is pure IP. If the call
transits the PSTN then the phone can only use G.711 like the rest of
the legacy public phone network.

I know nothing about VoipTalk. If they allow you to call other VoipTalk
users via IP then you may enjoy wideband calls to them. Alternatively,
you may register a free account with some other SIP provider and start
making calls via SIP URI. This is the most common approach to achieving
wideband calling.

I wrote some guidance on doing just the
here:

http://www.mgraves.org/voip/2009/06/how-to-series-making-use-of-wideband
-voice-right-now/

Oh, yeah. I have a Gigaset A580IP with a couple of additional S67H and
SL78H handsets.

 Hi,

I have three Snom M3s at the moment but getting pretty fed up with the
issues :( I am UK based and would be interested to hear of other peoples
 recommendations. Key features :-

 * VM Notification
 * Good Range
 * G729 codec support
 * Common/Private Address Books per Handset(s)

Siemens Gigaset.

I tried the M3's - they're expensive and rubbishy plastic. Tiny buttons
and displays.

I've not found a better DECT system for range and clarity than the Siemens
ones - however some people have said that they're a bit quiet - make sure
you turn the volumes up in both the basestation and on the handsets. They
do support g729 natively, but I don't know if they carry it over the air -
DECT standard is G726 AFAIK... Although they do support a G722 wide-band,
so that'd have to be an over-air codec.

Their programming interface is a bit slow though - it's really horrible
javascript and pathalogically slow. I use google chrome...

There are features to sync. phone books between handsets too on the newer
ones, and they will display a big O_O type symbol when there is voicemail.

(It's a reel-to-reel tape symbol, but when was the last time anyone
actually used tape??? Bit like dialling a number I guess... :)

Gordon

Okay; looks like going to give a S685 a try to replace my Snom 360 deskphone.
I see it also supports IM networks ... Anybody know if it does straight XMPP so
I can hook into my own Jabber server ?

Best Regards,

The S685IP has no headset jack AFAIK. If you want to use a headset or
you don't need Bluetooth, get a S675IP. They're great, they do g722
wideband and you have plenty of company in the asterisk world to give
peer support. We have a bunch of Gigaset owners on our weekly
conference and we've even gotten Siemens Gigaset division to make a
significant firmware change bexause they're listening to what we users
have to say.

Panasonic had some nice looking SIP DECT handsets at the Expo for
Astricon. Looked to be robust and more business class than some of the
other devices. No idea where or if you can get these yet as it sounded
like a fairly new product.

The S68H handset (that you get with the S685IP) does have a headset
connector (2.5 mm jack plug).
