FWIW, I'm 7db from my central office and am using rxgain=5.0 and txgain=1.0 for now. Here in France I'm connected to ADSL using Free and they have a page available that you can get some info on your line, I'm 1355 metres from the central with 18dB. I'll play with rx/txgain. Those numbers don't sound right. In the US, many of the telcos have the same type of static information available (at least within their internal records), but the numbers are intended to be used by non- technical telco types to determine whether a customer's location can reasonably expect to support dsl. If the 1355 meters is correct, the cable loss should be more like about 4db (give or take a little based upon exactly what gauge of copper is actually used to serve your location). My guess is the 18db number is only there to suggest some sort of upper 'limit' for adsl. If that guess is correct, then I'd expect settings somewhere close to rxgain=3 and txgain=0 might be a reasonable starting point for zapata.conf parameters. RE: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
Interestingly I've found another site that I can get the data for any number in France, the data is supposed to come from France Telecom's own database. Even if you give an ISDN number it still reports the figures but, of course, says the line is not suitable for ADSL. In very very general terms, adsl is limited to sites that are within about 18,000 feet of the central office. (The real limit is expressed in terms of loss, but the limit was restated in terms of something the average non-technical telco employees can understand -- distance.) Adsl would never function on a cable pair that had 18db of loss, so something's wrong with that reported number, or, it was meant to communicate something different then how we're reading it. If asterisk (zaptel) would behave like commercial pbx's (and associated hardware), a real pbx engineer would: - measure the transmission loss from the customer's site to the central office milliwatt generator (eg, -7db loss) - then set the rxgain and txgain parameters to something slightly less then the measured loss (eg, rxgain=5, txgain=5). Its not uncommon to see those settings around 2db below the measured loss, but that varys by each pbx/telco engineering staff. However, the echo canceller in asterisk is not very good, and that forces us to use gain values substantially lower (causing complaints about low volume in many cases). Part of the echo canceller problems seem to be related to highly variable general-purpose PC hardware (amoung other things). That includes pci/interrupt latency issues, OS overhead, etc. As a result, gain settings that work for one asterisk system may not even be close for another system, and generally will be very different from those used in commercial pbxs. (That is exactly why T1/E1 interfaces to asterisk are preferred over analog interfaces.) Those asterisk systems further away from the central office typically have more issues with echo and audio levels then do those systems closer to the central office (distance measured in terms of pstn cable loss). That's also one of the reasons why colocated asterisk boxes don't have as many echo audio level issues. ___ Asterisk-Users mailing list Asterisk-Users@lists.digium.com http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users

RE: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
Greg, The rxgain and txgain settings are essentially used to address the pstn cable loss between your asterisk box and the central office. If you were located right next to the central office, then settings around 0.0 might work well. The further away you are from the central office the greater the gain number needed to compensate for that loss. The negative side of that is that if the gain settings are too high, you're likely to have echo on every call. So, start with something like rxgain=3.0 and txgain=3.0 and place a test call. If echo, drop both settings down by 3 (rxgain=0.0 txgain=0.0) and repeat. Each time you change those settings in zapata.conf, you will need to stop asterisk and restart it. A reload won't change the settings. FWIW, I'm 7db from my central office and am using rxgain=5.0 and txgain=1.0 for now. I still need to experiment with it, so I am not sure yet. When I have it I will post the settings. I really don't have a clear understanding yet of the principles for using gain. Are there, for example, specific reasons for different settings. Doubtfull the 99.98% is any sort of problem. The number would have to be much lower to have a constant impact on audio. RE: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
I'm not sure what type of phone you are on, but some of the SIP users at my job get the echo when their MIC is turned up too much. The SIP phone, from one * to another *, is hooked into ZAP channels. SIP Client SIP Server ZAP Server T1 connection If the SIP Client goes too high with the MIC, no good. Not sure if that helps. Or provides any insight. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gregory Wiktor - ADCom Corp. Re: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
That type of echo is usually caused by incorrectly (or not at all) tuned gain settings in zapata.conf. I don't know what kind of phones you're using, but for Asterisk to even be able to detect DTMF tones on our Sayson / Aastra 390s and 480s, our FXS channels are set to -5.0 on both rx and txgain. If you're using externally-powered phones (as in not your ordinary joe-schmoe analog phone), I have found that they're usually pretty hot (loud) and Asterisk can't understand what is said. Good luck! Re: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
Hi Gregory, Have you checked that the card is on its own IRQ? There has been a bit of discussion about this type of thing recently on the list, do a search on the archive to find the various threads. Try running zttest and see what accuracy it is reporting - anything less than 99.99% is supposedly bad. Various 'fixes' (work-arounds) are to make sure the zaptel is on it's own IRQ, disable Hyperthreading and remove RAID controllers or any other high-performance devices that support DMA and other things that are likely to compete with the zaptel. RE: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
Hello, Yes in the bios I set unused irq's. Zttest is sporadic. This is a non HT cpu, on a standard ide drive. It is basically just a p4-2.4 with a single ide, onboard lan, and that's about it. All other asterisk functions work well. Next step I think I'll try it on another board and see what happens... Or maybe recompile the kernel. RE: [Asterisk-Users] Static on TDM Zaptel FXO
A kernel recompile managed to give me an average of 99.98%, but I am not certain that this is optimal. It seems that I get some background hiss, although the static is gone. Anyone out there with higher than this? Thanks, Greg -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gregory Wiktor - ADCom Corp.
