I don't believe you really understand what Open Source means...it does not
mean FREE. It means that the source is open, not proprietary, and anyone
can download it and compile it and modify it and do what they want with it.
Which is something your company has obviously already done - they've
downloaded it, compiled it, and are using it in some capacity to make money
(or are using it in support of the process of making money). Otherwise how
would you get paid? Digium is the same - they are a company that makes
money so they can pay their employees who contribute to making Asterisk a
better product. Imagine if Digium made no money, because they just did
everything for free (support, modules, etc). How long do you think they'd
last? How long do you think their employees would continue to come into
work and contribute to the Asterisk project when they have no salary? Not
very.

If you think asterisk is such a horrible project, and that Digium is so
evil, why not find a better alternative, pitch it to your managers, and
convince them that your solution is better in the long run. If you can't do
that, maybe find someone that understands asterisk a little better and bring
them in to help support your system, leaving you free to not have to deal
with something you despise so much.

Re: [asterisk-users] receive faxes

2011-05-10 Thread Michelle Dupuis
I think the OP's point was that open source should mean:

Free to modify
Free to contribute code
Free to use.

Leaving the first two but taking away the free to use really takes the F out
of FOSS. There have been other posts discussing Digium's license requirements,
code ownership, etc. I think it's a fair and valid discussion (no need for a
love it all or leave it attitude).

Digium risks following the same path as Oracle with their Java product. Java
was THE open standard for programming for a long time, but this status is in
jeopardy as they clarify their license expectations. I don't think Digium is
at risk of a major backlash tomorrow, but it's a fine line to walk and easy to
fall.

I don't believe you really understand what Open Source means...it

Actually, it DOES mean free, especially since Asterisk is under the
GPL. But, as RMS often says, that's 'free' as in 'free speech', not
'free beer'. That problem doesn't exist in French, where there are
two distinct words for free and they refer to it as libre.

The point of Free (or Open Source) Software is that if you think that
some company (e.g., Digium) is charging too much to maintain it, you
have the freedom to maintain it yourself of even start your own
company and compete with them.

2011-05-05 Thread vip killa
The majority of open source projects out are NOT run by commercial
institutions... they are run by people committed to a better product (not to
making money)... they are maintained by people who have the resources to
host a repository (which does not take a lot of resources) and a community
of dedicated people who want to advance the product (and again NOT make
money)... what people do with the product is their decision and if they want
to use to it make money that is perfectly acceptable, but commercial
support or commercial addons provided by the maintainers (who are
obviously chosen and paid by Diguim in this case) of an opensource product
is obscene. Digium has a monopoly on asterisk and if you can't get something
to work, that means more money for them, if they break something you may end
up paying them $$ to fix it.

Asterisk kicks butt. It just does, even if you can't get your silly
faxing edge case to work, because Digium paid for development, for a
long number of years.

There are also people who come along, and because the source is
available, fix a particular bug that annoyed them, or added a feature
they personally wanted.

T.38 has a boatload of problems, and most of those problems are
because people who aren't employed by Digium did not read the specs,
or they did read the specs, but felt like they had to violate the
specs to get their code to work with a different broken T.38 stack.

I've personally fixed problems with asterisk, and I found my code
contribution accepted. Perhaps you've submitted patches the bug
tracker? We eagerly anticipate your voluntary code contributions.

Maybe statistically, there are more open source projects out there
that have non-paid lead developers, and they do their work on their
own dime, and on their own time.

But unless you're lucky enough to live in a place where you can hunt
and gather for everything you need, you need money to live in a
society, and have the resources to be able to sit at a keyboard long
enough to churn out code.

I could only afford to make my 'code contribution' because I have a
day job where I needed the fix.

If you'd ever read T.38 you'd find what you've written there pretty
funny. T.38 is full of holes. You simply cannot implement a working
package from it. You have to experiment, find what other people have
done, and try to fit in with that. The latest revision of T.38 is
supposed to fill some of the holes, by incorporating text that Kevin
Fleming, I and others prepared, as part of the SIP Forum working group

strange publishing procedures I have so far been unable to read this new

Does Hylafax support T.38?

The free fax works just fine with DAHDI. I've never tried to do T.38 with that
since it seems like it would be complicated and not give me much over using
DAHDI.

There is the t38modem[1] project. But as others will mention, there a
many faxing patents and the t38 is not the same on all vendors. Watch

Honestly Digium's Asterisk is not a quality project. Though it has lead the
way in innovative open-source VoIP, it's a flawed and chaotic project.
Hence, I refuse to pay Digium. Digium seems to make a bazillion dollars
off of these flaws by selling commercial support/addons anyway... so that
should be worth some bad karma points.

Non-T.38 faxing works reasonably well. I have some issues with some things

AJS, thanks, love the humor. Faxing is considered a legal method of
doing business in many areas. Maybe lobbing for more effective
digital signatures would help get faxing removed from our everyday

From dictionary.com:

lob1
[lob] Show IPA
verb, lobbed, lob·bing, noun
–verb (used with object)
1.
Tennis . to hit (a ball) in a high arc to the back of the opponent's
court.

2.
to fire (a missile, as a shell) in a high trajectory so that it drops onto
a target.

3.
Cricket . to bowl (the ball) with a slow underhand motion.

Who do suggest we should be lobbing our fax machines at?

It is called T.37. However, asynchronous protocols like T.37 are a bad

T.38 is defined to work over TCP/IP (although not TLS for some reason),
but its rarely used. It can only really work between 2 T.38 boxes
directly connected to the data network. To interwork with analogue FAX
machines you need to maintain fairly tight timing, and that means
sticking with UDP, as it does with all the other streaming stuff we do
over UDP.
