your flash media is >= 2GB I'd start using 256 MB to be more future proof.

I have always used ASTRUW as I dont have to worry about partition sizing.
Ultimately as CF gets cheaper, this will be less of a problem and I am also
thinking that it would be less detrimental on the system in filling up a
dedicated /mnt/kd partition rather than ASTURW.

Sounds stupid, but maybe the persistent storage was not set up before you made
your changes. And after a reboot all was gone.
