Deep Echo - An audio dungeon crawler

Hello everyone, Im Taldius, game developper.Deep Echo is a dungeon crawler where you control a character from the top. You can use a sonar to detect the walls, enemies and items.The goal is to find the exit of each level.The mechanic of the sonar was inspired by a TED presentation about echolocation by Dianel Kish.Thanks in advance.Ive made it for the Accessibility Jam that recquire to make a game for people with disabilities. I choosed to create an audio game for blind people. After 3 weeks of developpement on my free time, Ive finally made it! Hi everyone,Im the developer of the Blind Swordsman VR experience. It was developed for the month-long Mobile VR Jam, which was about making VR games or experiences for the Gear VR mobile VR headset.Im aware that the gameplay/content is very simple compared to audiogames such as Papa Sangre. If it was developed for a non-VR platform there would have been little point in making it or playing it since theres so many richer audiogames and experiences out there for PC or mobile. The point of the project was to give the sense of immersion that VR provides to the blind-swordsman trope. Specifically by having the world respond to your head movements. My aim wasnt to make the best possible game, I just wanted to make a stripped-down experience of being a blind swordsman, and try to make that experience of being in a dojo and hearing the rain outside and people coming towards you feel as real as possible and give you as much presence in that world as I had time to develop. The head tracking of the Gear VR allows you to make turning and tilting head movements to help determine the location of audio and have the audio in the world respond correctly. Using the GearVR also allows for turning around in the world as the means of control since it isn’t attached by a cord to a computer. You hear someone circling around behind you, and you have to turn around physically while standing or by spinning in a swivel chair to face them. Another aim of the project was to explore if positional audio used with head tracking could provide the same sense of being-there as VR experiences that rely on graphics. I feel like the audio used in VR is currently treated as not as important as graphics, so people are almost making the VR equivalent of silent films, and not using positional audio as much as they could or should. Im sure that audio-only VR, or VR with a heavy audio focus is capable of much more than the hear-it and hit-it gameplay I developed, but there wasnt something I could find in the VR space to point to so I still feel that making the Blind Swordsman VR experience was worthwhile, even though its so simple. So its not a very full-featured game but I believe it succeeds at the being-there illusion that the VR medium seeks to create.The tools that I used to make the experience were the Oculus Audio SDK and the Unity game engine, and they are both available for free, so I think that a lot more people will start making audio-only or audio-focused VR experiences now that more head-tracking VR headsets are coming to market. I hope the VR equivalent of Papa Sangre comes along soon, but that was beyond the scope of what I was able to develop in my spare time over a month.I hadnt heard of Swamp or GMA Tank Commander before, so Im excited to try them out. Are there any other audio-games anyone would recommend I try out to increase my knowledge of whats possible with audio gameplay? Although it wasnt my aim to make the best audiogame, I want to learn as much as possible so it can be applied to VR.Cheers,Scott

Hi Sam,When I logged in an hour ago, I was at the top of a tree and checked my health. It was at 1,000. Then, twenty or so seconds later, I hear the loud beep indicating very low health. I checked my health again and it was down to one. I wasnt attacked and I wasnt sick, so I assume the hacker must have meddled with the game. Then, I check my energy level and it was down to 25. Just letting you know that this hacker is still doing serious damage to players characters. Hope you can figure out how to patch the security breech.

Alright, I give up. Can someone explain how to find the Food Court on Map 5? I always wind up in the second shootout zone, the theater, or the bookstore, and I cant get past. Theres also a place behind the mattress store I cant seem to access. Whats the trick to the other half of the mall?My other question is about the area at the top of the escalators. Are we meant to explore that by getting past the raiders, or is it just good point-building territory?  I noticed that its Sub1, based on the beacons, but that makes no sense in the Swamp universe. I imagine, then, that were not supposed to get past that first area with the raiders and the escalators. Is that right?

The zombie pedia actually has the best advice with riot gear zombies. Shoot them and make them use their shield, then wait a bit and shoot them again. If your too quick with the second shot, youll hit their shield while its still up, but if your too slow theyll use the shield again. Id recommend just blasting them so they use their shields until you get the idea, though of course at a pinch melee works .

@Sanslash332, I didnt say adding TTS was impossible merely was pointing out that it would be unlikely and implausible for Nintendo to do so without some extremely convincing reasons to do so. I dont know what your experience is with the tech industry, programming, etc but I cant help but feel as though you gravely underestimate the costs and work involved in carrying out your requests. It may not be as simple or as easy as you claim.For example, you mention open source TTS systems. The problem is that open source software such as Espeak have restrictions that prevents it from being used in a commercial product. So Nintendo cant just grab something like Espeak which is licence by the GPL and port it to the 3DS or Wii-U without violating the softwares license agreement. So it would not be an option for them.So if we consider the fact that the open source solutions such as FreeTTS, Espeak, and Festival are all off limits for a commercial de
 veloper like Nintendo that means they have to put the time and money into developing their own TTS engine and voices. That is neither cheap or easy. Either that or they can contract with a company like Cepstral but would cost lots of money to license the technology. Thats easier than developing their own TTS engine and voices, but probably much higher in cost.Even assuming Nintendo went ahead and did that, something I find pretty unlikely, there is no absolute guarantee that a certain game developer will be willing to go back in and add it to the game you want. Most console game developers write the game, sell it, and forget about it. They arent in the habit of releasing regular updates for their games, patching them, because it is assumed to be complete the moment it is released.. They are not likely to pay some employee to add TTS support to the game after the game was presumably completed and has been selling for weeks or months. How do you, a blind gamer, just
 ify to the developer that it is worth their time and money to go back and update the game and resell it with this new update?In short, while I agree with you that it is a good idea, Id love to see these companies do this, I also believe it to be unrealistic. I have worked enough with software development and have talked with professionals in this field to know what you are asking for is beyond what these companies will be willing to do without a very convincing reason.

Tom, I agree with everything that you said except fr the developers forgetting about the games they sell. especially nowadays with modern consoles EG the ps3 and beyond, many developers still patch their games regularly. Not for years on end mind you, so the chances of accessibility being added to older games is near impossible. But contemporary game developers, particularly with fighting games, patch them all the time... as they find new balance and game tweeks that need to be adjusted, and downloadable content is now also a huge thing. So I wouldnt say developers tend to just sell a game then forget about it. but I know for sure I have les experience than you with the professional tech industry, since, well, I have had none... lol. So all this could just be a lot of hot air. hehe.

So wait, is this actually a feasible way to play a game?Im honestly skeptical and think that the best thing would be to adapt the interface with proper audio indicators and such, but if that idea or a variant of it (e.g. using panning to indicate horizontal position) can yield somewhat usable results, I may consider giving it a quick try as a stopgap until I can implement a full blown audio mode in my game.Also I wouldnt rule out 2D games completely, but any attempt to do this with them will definitely require changing the way things are rendered (e.g. no background, replacing sprites with detail-less boxes representing the object type, possibly reducing the viewport to allow things to be larger within the limited resolution, etc.).

@Assault, as far as updating and patching games goes you may have a point considering newer platforms like the XBox One or Playstation 4 are much more open to that kind of thing than were prior generations of game consoles. I guess my comments above were aimed more at the industry as a whole and what has often been the case in the past.For example, the game consoles and games my son and I have are outdated by todays standards. I still have a Playstation 2 and my son also has a Wii at his moms house. Neither console is exactly new, and given certain limitations of them at the time usually when the game was released on disc there wasnt much new content or updates available since once the games came out they were considered more or less complete. However, now that the game consoles like Playstation 3, XBox 360, Playstation 4, and XBox One all have more in the way of downloadable content I guess I could see an update for TTS etc being offered through that meth
 od assuming the developer of said game could be convinced of the value of adding said feature in the first place. That, of course, is the problem.New features like TTS might be able to be offered through downloads but if the developers arent convinced that such a feature is necessary, feel it costs too much, or a hundred of other reasons its a mute point. So clearly coming up with some justification, financial or otherwise, should be the goal of anyone requesting text to speech to be added to their favorite consoles and games.

Hi all!Well, I have to say that my character Glein, can move again. It cost me a lot of work, I disconnect and reconnect of the game several times for that the character to advance a little ... every time disconnected and then logged in again for that the character could move a little more, until finally arrived into Safe zone.When i arrived in the Safe zone, I realized quickly that... all i had in my inventory was 2 Jennifers Letter. Yep! even when pressed the letter Z, to see what weapon had equipped, the game told me: -Jennifers Letter equiped. Lol! And when i pressed Shift + 4 (scriptkey) the game told me: Using -Jennifers Letter, with 2 rounds.Then, with this I came to the conclusion that what had happened, the reason why I could not move... It was because my inventory had exceeded the limit of items. And really, Aprone, I would like to confirm this.Because at the time when i donated the letters, the game allowed me log-i

Hi,well, you could make it so that you can escape to get out, but you lose if you do it. After all, if you now just wait around to die in beat boxing for example the result is just the same, but when you are able to press escape you dont have to wait until the game ends by itself. I dont really have another idea to prevent escaping out of a minigame to being used as a cheating method.

Not just because it is a lotr game, (particularly sinse I have to put my tolkien sensabilities away), but because of how the players actions affect the story. Its an action rpg where you play a ranger infiltrating mordor, however depending upon what routes you choose in the story, and whom yu decide to kill, the npcs shuffle around. So if you fight an orc Captain and kill them, their next in command will take over, in turn they may assassinate someone else. Each orc officer the game generates has a slightly different set of stats and powers and a name, and can interact with other npcs outside the players control, meaning that the route the story takes and whom you fight as enemies can vary. <
 /p>Actually, much as Id love a huge final fantasy style rpg with a massive area to explore and fixed plot, Id also be up for something more action based and random in the Diablo style as well, particularly if the jobs in the game were as diverse as some of the diablo ones, like witch doctors who have curses and summonable creatures to play with, sinse the more random the game the more replay value it has, although of course a huge game with a fixe story could be replayable enough if it had a sufficiently major amount of exploring and sie quests and extra items to find and such.

That depends, but I think I should go into abit more detail on how it works.The vOICe software can only convert images in to Black and White, even if the original image is in color. The time it takes a sound to play represents the X axis of the image, so a pixel on the far left of the picture would be at the very beginning of the sound, and the pitch of the sound represents the Y axis of the image, so a very high pitch means the pixel would be at the top of the image, low pitch at the bottom. The brightness of each pixel is represented by the volume, the louder the sound, the brighter the pixel, the quieter the darker the pixel.Now this means that moving in a real life 3D space with shadows and lighting creates Contrast and provides a sense of Depth, allowing you to more easily make out shapes and determine distance between them by how loud/quiet parts of the sound is, when it plays and what its pitch is. In sighted 3D First Person games its less effective because al
 ot of them have crappy lighting, it often being just as bright down a hallway as it is right next to you among other details, so when converting the image from black and white in to Sound you get little contrast and can lose your sense of depth and positioning.Its often worse in 2D games, which often have no shadows and use a lot of bright colors, making it very difficult to make out whats going on.This doesnt necessarily mean its impossible to make 2D and 3D video games using The vOICe, but I do think it takes a very different approach compared to sighted games.@sikThis is the exact approach ive taken with my own 2D engine, Ive rendered the background black and the terrain as dark grey, and the player as a white block to help give contrast to make it easier for the player to know where they are in the environment, combined with positional feedback like sounds for walking, bumping into obsticals, and jumping. I really do hate that there are so many blind mac users, some that even know how to code, and no mac games that are really good and at least less than $15 or so. Im not paying that much money just to freaking hear a sort of choose your adventure game in audio. I want to explore and do stuff, not make endless little choices.

Chris, I dont think you could see my messages, but I was on the server while you were having those troubles tonight. Your character was tossing up errors that I discovered were somehow inventory related. You hadnt hit any item limit, but some item you had was causing issues. I saw you signing in and out, but what actually solved the problem was that I ran your characters inventory through a filter to clean out anything that didnt belong. Regarding 18-2: That one gave me a lot of trouble, also.I had to slow down quite a lot in the turbulence section... except, as soon as you get out, there is a huge barrage of lasers.And, to make matters more troublesome, the announcements are too slow to keep up with you, even at low speeds.Since the turbulences are so close together, I decided to wait until it is announced that theyre all clear. If I get too close to the next one before its done speaking, I fly in circles to keep from going forward. If it still isnt clear... you should get a feel for how long you can stay in the area with the alarm before its too late.Balancing both of those took a lot of practice. I spent a lot of money on missiles just so I didnt have to sit and machinegun all those walls every time I failed.

Hi,While ITunes may not work so well with audiobooks an such because having different folders for audiobooks is quite needed,songs if put in a playlist will do just as well.ITunes might be a bit complicated to learn at first for some people, I personally found it just as eazy or hard as any other software. Transfering music or adding music to your phone can be done quite eazyly in the ways explained above, and I dont really see what could be more eazyer than say pasting the files you want into the automaticly add to iTunes folder and when you connect and sync your phone for the music to get transferred to your phone and be available in the music app.If you have a main directory of music which youd like symced to your iphone, you can also have iTunes just add that folder for you. However as pitermach said, if songs are not labeled well and are missing albom and other info,obviously the music app will show those songs in unknown albom and so on.
 The music app on your IOS device can let you search for your files,view them by alboms,playlists or all songs.Which works well for my needs.Obviously if apple were to allow a android like usb feature for transfer of files and apps and other things,itd be much awesome and better than this ITunes business,but then Apple is the company that runs the ITunes store which sells loads of music too, No one likes DRM music files, so if they were to allow that,itd result in mass pirating of their media and thus losses for them, so I do see where they are coming from,or at least why they employ such a thing. grryf

hello ironcross, word doesnt seem to like your notes file. when I launch it, nvda just says unknown and doesnt read any other applications. when I press alt f 4, word tells me that it found unreadable content and asks me if I want to restore it. both options no and yes do the same, just show me the unknown thingy again and I cant use anything else untill I press alt f 4 to get out of there.

I interpreted it as being unable to create an instance of a class within that class.You can do this, but it requires paying attention to handles. You cant do this:class A {A a1;}But you can do this:class B {B@ b2;}And you can do just about anything in methods that you can do in any other function.

Just to be clear, if anyone isnt quite understanding what Magurp is saying:The vOICe is much, much better for real-world first person.Ive played with it a lot in the hopes of making 2D games more accessible, with very little success.But the one time I tried walking around my house and outside with it (using my laptops webcam), it was much more helpful.Generally speaking, I expect my primary use of the vOICe anymore to be if I make videos with my computer, so I can hear if Im in frame or not.I might try to throw together an example of what the Swamp Radar might sound like if it were handled by the vOICe. I think I still have sonified screenshots from Sonic3 in my dropbox somewhere.

If it is reading 5 digits whenever you move the cursor, thats because value at that position is out of bounds for the tile list.Have you added any tiles (either by creating them yourself, or by loading them from another map like the tiles file)?A step-by-step guide to making a more comprehensible map to start with:- open the editor- choose load from the main menu, and enter tiles in the filename prompt.- After you are told that tiles loaded successfully, press escape until you are in edit mode.- When in edit mode, press, w, to resize the map. 100x100 is around the size of the LMS map, and multi1 is around 270x420.- Press enter until you hear the name of the tile you want.- Press home, then page up, to move to the top left corner of the map.- Press, m, to set the mark at that position.- Press end, then page down, to move to the southeast corner.- Hold shift, and 
 press space, to fill the map with the selected tile.If this doesnt work, then things are quite weird and will require more involved debugging.

WellYep, the zombie hoards are hard. There unfortunately isnt another way around other than just shooting better and listening well over the music. I would recommend looking at the zombies and trying to take out chain saw zombies and farties first. Also, dont forget your melee weapon, sinse melee can save your live when your ringed by zombies. One other thing i found helpful was how I practiced movement. In stead of standing with my phone in front of me and turning, I found it better to stand and pretend my phone was an actual gun, and just move my hands in small precise movements, only moving my feet and doing a full turn if I had to take out zombies behind me or to one side. This is why Gyro control rocks! sinse I cant think of another game where you literally have to practice quick gun movement patterns like that, just remember that stepping backward wont move you further away from the zombies (I have actually tried that, which was amusing!).

I think you guys who assume writing a tts engine or update is simple need to recheck the facts. You have no way of what the internal nintendo console OS is, what type of system it is, and whether it even has enough room for something like TTs. Im not a programmer by any means, but I know that if a system isnt built with a specific feature in mind, there may not be enough room in the original source code to add that new feature without having to reinspect every line of code and make sure it works with it, so basically rewiring the whole system... and game companies will never do it, if you cant show them its worth their time and money to do. I also hate to be a wet blanket, but these are facts I believe need to be addressed. Sony is going in a starting direction with adding tts with party chat messages, and you can be assured that this feature was already being thought about a long time ago, otherwise they wouldntve just released a minor update w
 ith that feature included. Also remember that not all games are coded the same way. Take a PC, for example. even on PC, where there is an established speech platform, no mainstream games will ever have text read aloud unless that is specifically coded, because that just isnt what theyre designed with in mind. So I agree with Tom. While the request is a good one, you have to be much more diligent in showing Nintendo or whatever other company that somethign so expensive and time consuming would be worth their efforts, and cant talk about libraries and adding tts code without giving clear and specific examples.

@sanslash332, I did mean! that Braillemon didnt have all the complete features of pokemon, not that it was not an rpg, sorry if that didnt come across. As to a fully graphical game with complete access, on the one hand that would be a very good thing, both for advertising audio games to sighted gamers and for people like myself who might be able to use the graphics for something along with the audio, (I certainly make use of the of the few visual elements in games like Swamp or Shades of doom). , On the other hand graphics programming is a major beast and would likely restrict the style and complexity of the game just because of the level of complication in adding full graphics as well as full audio. Look at Terraformers which did this. not a bad game, but it feels more like an extended tech demo than an actual game in its own right and many of the ideas and systems tried out like the pitch locks just never got off the ground. So,
  Id certainly be in favour of an audio game with full graphical support, but not if working on those graphics detracted from the amount of time, work and resources spent on the audio or the length of the game.

Ive mailed Vipgameszone a couple of times about this myself because frankly the state of the game is down right weerd! On the one hand its gone from their website, on the other, if you use the Xhour on the web option in the game itself you can still read the manual and indeed still download the demo. Its very strange. I did hear that they dropped the game because it wouldnt work past xp, but if in fact it does work on windows 7 64 bit,  well god knows!That is why if you look in the database the status of the game is given as unknown

Roflmao this is amazing... I had no idea I still had this stupid thing in my clipboard until I saw this topic again and then looked to see what I had, not really expecting much but...ghrishjknaw imblaphkgi. Um, yeah, that was from a carving on a stone within a rat shamans summoning circle in the Aztechnology arcology building on a shadowrun mud called Awakened Worlds...I was looking for a tome and a missing page from said tome in order to complete a really, really annoying quest that eventually I just gave up on because it wasnt worth it, thats probably some kind of scrambled message, I had it in my clipboard because I thought hey why not, and tried saying it out loud, with no result of course, because sadly the days of xyzzy, plugh, and plover are long over.

@pitermach, even with perfectly legal stuff Itunes fails horribly even if you just want stuff organized in your own way rather than the way the almighty apple says so, like putting all books of a trilogy together or all your music from lotr versions together and the shenanigans with the horribly bloated program with its cruddy interface full of stuff everywhere doesnt help. I also disagree that files not having Id tags is your fault, an audio player should just,  well play what audio files you want, not force you to comply with its own structure. I actually sometimes think the reason Apple doesnt do a streight Usb folder transfer and makes the process so complicated is quite deliberate, sinse they want to make it as hard as possible for your Iphone to work with stuff you havent bought through Itunes! though for me, this has the opposite effect sinse as I said I wouldnt use Itunes ever again!@Afrim, yep, itunes is a bastard. I

The BGT help file doesnt work with NVDA on windows 8.1 64 bit. That is to say, the help topics in the tree view simply read as unknown.I dont know if the license agreement allows the use of chm decompilers, but if it does, thats the simplest solution.
