Is there a tutorial to go through? quite often with these sorts of games there is a tutorial that tells you to go to each different link. I'm not sure having not tried eon empires specifically but I would suspect that was the case. I also realize from the above list I missed unification wars, which has a db page. unification wars also has a tutorial like that. i wondered if the game was still going but it certainly is.

Why is space so boring?

The topic about recent stratogy games had made me think. I've played lots of stratogy games in my time, however nearly all have been browser based. They generally fall into one of two camps on a sliding scale.1:  single unit action based increase or 2: multi management time based increase. On the one  end of the scale you have games where you control a single spaceship/player character and basically you spend the game whacking away at a limited number of stations to increase experience and maximize the amount of damage done per whack, whether this is by converting gold/credits/whatever in game currency into resources that increase your whacking power, eg, weapons and armor, or by calculating a number of numeric factors trade style to make sure you gain more than you lose with each whack (in this case a whack would be a trade). then, there are the time based, decentralized games where you control an empire or company or medeival village or 
 whatever. The object here is to set a number of factors, often choosing from a large selection so that your installation increases over real time. Often, games will include  a mix of whack based gameplay and gradual increase, eg, you might trade the resources yourvillage or colony produce, or need to build up to gain items to attack and get experience, or (as in games like turf wars), use your whacks to obtain time increases. With a very few extremely! rare exceptions such as puppet nightmares and core exiles, the point of all of these games is basically a run of "who can increase their numbers the fastest" whether that is in direct tests against the other player's numbers, or by who can trade goods cheapest. The thrill the player is supposed to gain from these games is entirely based on competition, often competition brought into sharp focus by clans or guilds or alliances. The games themselves are usually pretty static, and 99 times out of 
 a hundred, even lack in atmosphere and text descriptions. Yet real life is not like a game. In reality if a lord tells their peasants "build a smithy there" the  ground might be too soggy, someone might get crushed by a log and need a doctor, there would need to be a negotiation with builders etc. In cases of expantion and exploration the case is even more serious, sinse at no time in history can I ever think of a point where the equation was simply "Explorers in, resources out", ships get captured by pirates, there are lions and tigers and bears, and maybe your explorers would rather settle there and not! pay their taxes back to the crown (in medeival days remember that gathering taxes was often a matter of legal extortion). Should we ever get to the point of space colonization, I don't see why things would be different either. Your luna miner breaks down, you unexpectedly find that your jump gate goes poof just as you establish you
 r new colony, your colony ships land only to have their entire human population eaten by inormous mutant star goats etc. This to me would be a far more interesting model for a game, a game who's basic principles were closer to those of poker than rummy, where instead of simply building resources on a gradual basis and hoping to build better than other players, you are essentially always playing a game of risk assessment. If you've tried building your town hall on that plot of land twice and it's fallen down, well maybe you need to rethink your stratogy, or perhaps placate your peasants so they're more inclined to do a good job. Maybe you send your scout ship to your planet's moon to find resources and find a bunch of comparatively worthless copper ore,  comparatively worthless of course until your engineer tells you that she thinks she can build droid brains at a fraction of the cost with a litttle more copper, thus giving you a hole bunch 
 of new workers that more than repay the fuel and ship investment of setting up a mine on the moon. I'd love! to see more resource management and exploration games with thismodel. I know there are developers of muds and games here, so these are thoughts I'm offering. Rather than giving a static challenge, why not throw real disasters at your players and force them to cope!

Hello,Me being a server administrator myself, I can safely say that you can run wine, over ssh. It just depends on what you are going to run. for example, I only use it to run server programs that are not supporting linux or the program is not compiled into a 32 format for my needs. but yes, you can do it. As for what you did, have you done $ sudo apt-get install wine$ if so, you should get a number of packages that it should install for you.

Lol.@ogomez92, he's trying to run windows apps (server stuff, I would hope, as anything else would be pointless because of linux counterparts), on that VPS.Personally I haven't messed with wine, I use linux boxes to run linux things, and windows boxes to run windows things. Actually, I can only think of like... 1 server that I can't run on Linux lol.

Hello,  I'm not condemning anyone, I'm not here to yell or tell you guys what you should be doing. But in the new releases room there is the topic of Ultra Power, and on it are thrown around insults, childish screaming matches, and it's really getting annoying. It's possible to ignore the topic, but it's also been reported to you guys before and it still stands. Please could you guys do something about it? This is a fun game, but how exactly do you know weather your character is taking damage or the enemies are taking damage? The enemies and your character have the exact same attack sounds and pain sounds. I sometimes manage to kill one person, but it seems like that is done by luck.

You find metal on the fence in the abandend camping ground.To make a cumpas, combine a deeped_bowl with water. Then combine leaves with metal. Combine filled_deeped_bowl and direction_finder, then add 1 more deeped_bowl to it.

Still haven't seen Starwars (that's planned for this afternoon). Haven't encountered any spoilers, unless vague disappointed-sounding comments that we all saw coming count as spoilers.I finally managed to beat Mario, though (what no being the one to render it accessible does not mean I can beat it in under 5 years why would you think that?), which somewhy was exciting enough that even bad Star Wars hopefully can't ruin the day.Also, I could really use more insulation in this building. ... Ah, and I forgot that I microwaved some water before I started playing Mario to keep my fingers from freezing off. I suppose I'll have to warm it up again. ... I don't plan on watching Starwars, I'm personally not really a fan of that kind of thing. But it's the last day of school before holidays, it's just a half day, and as far as I know I'm exempt from my semester exams today, which probably means I'm going to continue my project of the month, (not officially but it's what I've been working on all month), the building system in my new side scrolling game engine I'm working on.  I don't actually think this building system has ever been tried before in audio games, so basically here's my process.1. Figure out how I want to code an aspect the system.2. Open Pure Basic, and throw down some code that I... assume might work?3. Laugh in surprise when I run it and find that it works, which is usually about 75% of the time, or shrug otherwise and try again.  I started a topic earlier this months about shift keys in the general games discussion room,
  and the system I've been working on was why. This month I coded some (unrealistic but useful) arms, that can be used to both drop and throw items, as well as connecting building materials to structures in order to, well, build them, as well as a new experimental system of feeling. Basically, the way you "feel" objects in my game engine is that, say you're standing on a platform, you hold left shift, and while you're holding that you press down arrow, causing it to tap on the platform segment you are standing on. It will report "segment of platform name, with a length of segment length, and thickness of segment thickness", with platform name, segment length, and segment thickness being substituted for their respective values.  You can also feel things out to the left, right, or above you, as far as your arms can reach.  I'm sorry for boring you all with that rant about my new side scrolling game mechanics, I really am. I 
 just got overly excited when writing about it. Please forgive me.

I think that the idea of a completely unpredictable game goes against the idea of player-centric game design. Plus it's just harder. A game without rules is not a game. In a resource management game, players use experience or secondhand knowledge or something to determine the value of their resources, because resources are limited. And a game should reward a player for working hard. Can you imagine how many players would leave in disgruntlement if they spent a ton of resources creating a planet-exploration ship, only to have it destroyed because of some aggressive planet denisons? I mean I understand that there are things that should be unknown in a game, but completely unpredictable/unfair things can be overkill. Your other idea, about how a player should keep a bunch of useless ore in case someone just randomly realizes that they can build a robot or something out of them, is similar. It's just completely random. Besides being unfair, it's hard to implement. Unles
 s you plan to have a game where you can just do an ever-increasing amount of stuff, but then eventually you run out of connections to make and then the game becomes a static game which you don't seem to want to play. A game will always have that kind of shortcoming, because when a game is created, it attempts to simplify life's concepts into code. No matter how much code you write, a game is still infinitely more simple than life. And really, that's the way it should be. We already have to play life 24-7. We shouldn't have to play another life too. A game should be simpler than is life, and they all are, and that is the way it should be.But that doesn't really address the player-centric design question. If a player can't learn by playing the game, there's no point in playing the game. Creating compeltely unexpected events like what you were mentioning doesn't really teach a player about the game. Unfortunately for all games, they will al
 l become fairly predictable if one plays them enough. That's the weird thing about games. If they are unpredictable, they aren't fun to learn. If they are predictable, they are fun to learn, but then they aren't fun to play afterwords. There's nothing to be done about it but to create more games. Because Life is the only dynamic game that gives you challenges perfectly calibrated to your skill level (this is something I learned from reading A Theory of Fun for Game Design, which is a really awesome book).

Good Lord. Can't believe this craziness hasn't been moderated yet. Worse than a kids' classroom in an elementary school... hate to sound mean, and normally I stay out of these drama threads. But quite frankly, this is rediculous, especially about a dead game that is simply being passed around by people who have the time to play around with the source code. Where did i ever say "the game needs to be entirely random?" just because I have grown to hate the static accumulation model, that doesn't mean I don't see the value in a bit of that, I just see the design as more fluid and more based on the player's ability to cope with whatever he/she finds, and adapt to good or bad circumstances rather than simply statically accumulate.Castaways is a great example. Rather than just creating static jobs for your population, you need to change assignments around according to the goals you need to achieve, the resources available, and the circumstances at the time.This is the sort of thing I mean, simply having defigned areas of uncertainty so that players are required to play adaptively. I also don't know what this has to do with "the game not being player centric" indeed in many ways it's more player centric than the reverse, sin
 se instead of players simply being required to follow a set path of whack 20 monsters, gain x experience, players are always having to think ahead and plan far more.You also missunderstand my example of the copper ore. In a game situation I was imagining the following. Lets say your playing a space colony building game where you must expend energy to accomplish tasks. You survey the moon of your colony and find copper ore. Getting that copper ore off the moon, mining and transporting it will take say 5 energy per turn, however you look at your available builds with that copper ore and determine that most of the stuff available is not worth the 5 energy per turn it'd take, eg, the copper ore could be used to make fencing for your farm which would produce food more efficiently, but your food production is okay. However, instead of a static research tree which opens up more builds, you have research projects and designs assigned randomly according to what staff
  you have. Your engineer happens to have a robotics design that will save you a massive amount of trouble and increase your amount of energy (say a net gain of 10 energy per turn), so suddenly now that copper ore is much more useful so you begin the wherewithall to extract it. This is what I mean by adaptive play, situations that require you to play in a fluid fashion rather than in a basic process of repetitive action or static structural accumulation. this sort of adaptive play also increases the immertion factor as well, sinse manifestly your dealing then with a far more simulated environment. Neither does this sort of design have to be difficult from a coding perspective, desasters or windfalls could simply be basic stat losses with a random chance of occurrence, while research projects could again be assigned randomly rather than accumulated with some static measure such as research points. On the level of life vs gaming, i personally disagree. Life 
 is often far too! predictable, especially in it's ability to place undynamic challenges, eg, your stuck in a dull job and have no option for a better one. But actually coping with problems in games increases wellbeing and makes a person better able! to feel they have control over life than the repetitive sort of style seen in so many static growth type games.

Hmm, well that was a misunderstanding there, no more, no less. Maybe I should read slower. I guess what you are really looking for is more interconnected mechanics and more types of resources to facilitate those connections. Complex systems are still hard to design well just because of the complexity of the system. With interdependent components can, one must always be on the watch for changes that can affect other parts of the game. It is actually really hard to create a complex, balanced game; it is also hard to predict the outcome of the economy due to the number of interconnected factors in it. It is definitely something to speculate about though

Hello;Hear are a couple of corrections. knifes should be knives, and hits should be fists.Also when you level up, there's no way of knowing you're doing it. Perhaps a sound would help. One more thing; when you press the letter L; you're always on level one, even if you kill as many bad guys as it says you must to advance to the next level.

I am not even on this project, I haven't been for a while. Personally I would have deleted the topic a long time ago as well. By the way, ivan can barely code, vlad is a newbie, and carter is just a server guy and ivan isn't even letting him host the server. I had planned for none of this to happen, by simply using up's code as a template for a bigger, better, game. One that was more rtr style, not meaning 3d but like fuck the stats. Damage and defense, should be gone. But by this point, up should go die in a hole. Just delete it. Players and devs alike.

Pyglet uses the AVBin library for supporting other audio formats, though I haven't tried using it yet. Many of the recent updates for pyglet which are still ongoing have been focusing on refactoring and improving the audio support. The convience functions work pretty good for basic audio, though I ran into a lot of problems trying to implement positional audio with them and switched to the lower level OpenAL bindings without any further issues.May have also spoken too soon about Pygame, looks like there's been some recent chatter about a new Pygame SDL2 version in development.

Hi all,Well, I'm trying not to ask as many questions, and instead I'm trying to experiment and fix bugs on my own as much as possible, but this time I'm stuck so I really have to ask.So, I'm making a game, and I already created a map and all the pits to jump over and so on, and there sound updating relative to player's position works properly. Then I've decided to start creating my first enemy, and it's AI works as I wanted, but it's sound is not updating properly as it's flying forwards and backwards.In short, I'm creating a type of insect who's gonna fly around player's head, then it'll attack and fly away, and then it'll fly back to the player for another attack and it'll do it like so until it's dead, of course. Similar to bats in Q9, for example. The problem is, the enemie's sound is updating properly when it's flying towards me from my right to my center, but it's
  not updated when it's moving away from me, which means opposite, from my center back to my right. Hi.I have to say that dark is actualy right with his words about browser based games, they are far to linear and predictable, that's the reason why I stop playing those games like two weeks after I started playing them.Something which is also bugging me that it seems that almost every game falls in to one of two scenes.One is the typical fantasy theme with magic, monsters, classes and so forth, the other one is the space themed game with empire management or ship management, as dark already stated earlier.I am missing something like a world war i or iii mud, or something western or eastern based.Greetings Moritz.

Don't Swamp and SoundRTS work without a problem, though?  It's been forever since I've seriously used Jaws, and I don't even have it on my system anymore.  If this is truly an issue, I know how to duplicate the BGT hooks.  While I think the rest of it isn't worth using, if there's a legitimate need for them then I'll put out a library for it.  Should only be 50 lines, and everything lets you get the window handle, so it should work with all of them.  Yet another case in which jaws is beyond annoying and needs to be spoiled with special magic faerie dust support, go Freedom Scientific.You can get around the indentation thing by using code tags, which I can't type because they're code tags.  Believe it's code in brackets to open, /code in brackets to close.  I've got a pull request against NVDA to do something sane for non-breaking spaces, so that should be much less of an issue for NVDA 
 users in the near future.  Cut/pasting will not work right without code tags, though, as the non-breaking spaces invisibly pollute.

Pyglet is better than Pygame because Pyglet does the event handling stuff that comes up at some point in every single thread I'm involved in on here.  Duplicating it yourself is anywhere from 100 to 500+ lines depending on how good you want it to be.  Pyglet is a pure Python library using its own key retrieving code, etc.  The downside of Pyglet is that, last I heard, the audio part sucked if you wanted to get it working with anything but wav (admittedly, being as I have my own custom audio engine, this is not a concern for me, nor do I learn audio libraries from others).  It's also harder to get started with, as it forces you to do things the "right" way.Any of the Python freezers works fine.  You can protect your code with slight interpreter modifications.  By doing it yourself, you prevent the development of a central point of DRM failure.  BGT technically is centrally crackable, if someone wanted to take the time.
 sp; The easiest way to modify the Python interpreter is simply to go find the header that declares all the bytecodes  and shuffle them around.  This immediately makes it nontrivial to decompile the app.  For an extra level of protection, you can also modify it to not load .py files if it detects that it's running as a frozen exe.  You can go much much further, even: write your own Python interpreter loader in C that asks for keys and refuses to go further, for example.This is harder, but it has an advantage: if I crack your game, I haven't cracked all Python software everywhere.  Personally, I'm waiting for the day that someone figures out BGT decompilation out of boredom, as there are many more people besides me with the technical know-how to do it.  People don't decompile for source, they decompile to disable DRM; you'd not get local variable names and such out of BGT, but you could almost certainly get enough for that (
 but then, most DRM schemes in this community are already trivially breakable anyway, so idk).

Hae all! so I've been looking for a speech recognition software that can give me the full control of the system using my voice, and the most prefered option that I came across was Dragon. however, I wanted to know if it's possible with it to type? that is, to speake into the mic and get the words typed out? or is there another better option for that kind of thing?

Hi,Since we have 32 bit softvoice dll files, it is possible to write programs that use them. One design problem I can see with a historical MUD or its cousins is the same problem that besets anyone trying to create an LotR game, in that the large important events of the universe have already been laid down by the history, or the author.  It becomes difficult to find a place where the players can have sufficient effects without having to imagine a completely different outcome and account for that.  This is hard enough in a human-moderated game, harder still in a game that is computer-administered.

Yeah, not sure if it's worth $15 honestly, when we have more involved titles for 20. I am not going to compare it to any free games though, because those games are usually made not because they are valueless, but because the dev doesn't want to charge for his games. mason obviously does, so he is different from those developers, so we shouldn't compare him to them. But like the tichon blue games are only a little bit more expensive. Etc.

I used 43 -86, which should correspond to 43 n by 86 w.  (I actually used 43.0 86.0) with a 40 km radius.  This corresponds to Pentwater Michigan.  I tried out zoom levels between ten meters and 1 km inclusive.  I did see some large geographical features like the Grand River and a few islands in Lake Michigan, (though oddly, Lake Michigan was not labeled as such or I didn't find it), but no cities, roads or other features.I suspect this area just hasn't been well mapped in Open Street Maps, it;s rural west Michigan and the closest large city is Grand Rapids, which was on the very edge of my map.

It would, if we could get usb serial working on that. If I ever were to actually market this speechboard if and when it would come out, considering these would be near impossible to mass-produce, I'm thinking under $50 for sure. Arduino parts are like $5 a piece, and the votrax shouldn't go for much.
