version 3.09 is out with some minor features, the biggest of which for me is the change of the music track labeled as kyoushuu in the extra menu translated as assault, or in game terms that badass track that plays during mid-boss fightsit's the same track, however now a bit better, some added instrumentation, plus a bit of a longer loop

Prepare for another eppick recording, whare me, blaze and Justin T set up a giant rigging system of the new bullet bomb, and set off a giant explosion, that shall for ever go down in redspot history. Bullet bombs are giant computerized bombs that when shot at/loose enough health, send out a giant ripping explosion. If other bombs are lear the one that exploded, they go to. You can detonate them with claymores wirelessly, timebombs, rockets, shotguns, jets, anything that can cause destruction. Watch as we set up a giant link of bombs, nearly 300 of them. Yes, of course we had to use commands to give the items. Still it was very awesome. Prepare for this new eppick recording in like an hour or so!

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

Guilevi, I do usually leave in the graphics, with some modifications.  During the process of turning the game into an accessible one, I tend to overhaul the graphics code to make it more suitable for low vision players.  So while the graphics do stay in, they are rarely quite the ones they started with. It's always good to find the programming methods that works best for you.  For me, I may have went in the opposite direction.  As a new programmer I commented everything and used fairly descriptive variable names.  As time passed I commented less and less, and my variable names evolved into the shortest and simplest things possible.  In many program I write, most of my variables will be only a single character in length, with a few that are 2 characters long, and one or two that are longer.  Even my function names tend to be rather cryptic, being between 3 and 6 characters in length.  For some reason, the more cryptic approach work
 s for me.

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

@Aprone that's interesting. I never really thought your games started out as graphic-only. Do you keep the graphics around on all of your titles though, like the last one you released? My first actual game was a MOO which never got released to the public because of... The typical problems that moo brings with it when people are dumb and decide to get into all kinds of crap, which is what I pretty much did  few years ago. Later I looked into BGT, and I remember my first game was a space invaders ish sort of thing, with only one enemy, which had an interesting health system and some kind of bonus thingy, I think, I honestly can't remember very well. The first audiogame I ever released is probably Town of Peril, although as you all know, that was originally just a clone of Danger City. The code ended up being so bloated and made so little sense even to me that I ended up just dropping it. I learned two things from that project, which may not work for others but d
efinitely worked for me: 1, use functions, classes and different files when possible, but without exageration, and 2, acronyms and other cryptic variable names are a bad idea if you plan to work on a game long-term. When you go to add a new feature, and you see a line full of declarations with lots of acronyms and no comments, and you have to go looking through the whole code to see where each variable is... yeah. Don't.

Hi everyone,Thanks for your replies. If you're interested, have a look at the following article published a couple of days ago on Gamespot:http://www.gamespot.com/articles/consol … 0-6439754/The game industry, like many other industries, is most likely going to evolve into a service industry. That means in the (very near) future you will not be purchasing copies of games (which you now own) anymore, but that you will be paying a (monthly) subscription for (a month of) gameplay (and will not own any game anymore. Similar to Netflix or Spotify. Goodbye information age, hello experience age. You could focus on Steam now but maybe it is wise to browse the horizon for these future services and whenever one pops up, challenge their accessibility immediately. Hopefully we can stimulate accessibility into a unique selling point amongst such services.Concerning Steam: I had another look at the change.org campaign to make Steam accessible for blind gamers and I think we should have another go at that. A campaign I mean. We may also have some people in our personal network in the industry who might want to help contacting Gabe directly.

I'll try to check the code about that.About chapter 8, if you attack b1 with the archers, they can do that from a1 because their range is big, so it causes the necromancer and the footmen to attack b1 too, and they usually don't do that in chapter 8.I don't know yet what will change. Probably the value of the range for archers as a first step.

@figment: I'm seriously hoping that things might start to change and perhaps listing some games might be a start, as we can gather solid evidence that developers are taking time to add screen reader support to their games and give links to the actual pages too, the site entries, etc. Granted though, most of the site entries are just going to be updates to existing pages the only new one right now would be Skullgirls. Remember that Valve themselves are not the developers of these games, and that is the difference and an annoying one, but the games listed will be usable with screen readers once Steam is launched and running in the background. I'll give another example, a bit different, yes, but similar too. This website has a game called Demor, and also another one called IN The Pit. Well back when these games were added, they had a massive distinction which set them apart. They needed a game controller to play, no keyboard support. I literally couldn't play the
m for years, but then somehow one day I ended up getting a game controller. Luckily, the games were still listed, and because the way was paved for the future, it was a matter of grabbing the games and plugging in the controller, and I wasn't locked out anymore. While Valve are important, yes, it's not just about Valve here. The dev of Skullgirls, the devs from Choice of Games gamebooks, and the devs who made Grail to The Thief, could have all turned round and told us, hay, we're not going to add accessibility features to our games because Steam isn't accessible. Instead, they gave people who wanted to experiment, a chance to actually try it, and implemented features into their games. With new lores coming into play as well, and a small list of games that support screen readers, I think it's about paving the way for the future, Valve still won't listen overnight. However, imagine what will happen if in a year or two they launch something self voic
ing the way Microsoft and Sony did, and everyone's going to be looking for games to play. We'll be ready for them. The thing is, it's going to be a small list the only pages I can see changing are, a new one for Skullgirls, an update to the Choice of Games page, an update to the Grail to The Thief page and an update for A Blind Legend. We're not about to start adding random games to the db, absolutely not. Our mission has not changed. But if enough people are made aware then maybe, just maybe, we can actually to start to make a slow difference and maybe even get some sighted folks on our side, and those folks might be able to contact people in the gaming industry and get Valve to finally listen. It's perhaps chasing a dream, yes, but sometimes dreaming big can work, I mean look at the xbox one and ps4 now, they're talking games consoles. I never thought that would happen. So who knows where this could lead. It might not lead anywhere, but isn't it
worth a chance to take a different approach?

I hate to break it to ya, Mohammad, but the existence of such programs is just wishful thinking. The system bios is beyond the control by any operating system installed on the system. The only exception would be Toshiba, since their machines do have software editable bios. But otherwise, think of the bios as part of the hardware itself. Because, after all, that's what it is. It is the firmware, not software, embedded in the motherboard. Without it, the computer can't start.

Dark you make a very good point.  The linear nature of screen readers does help quite a bit, and if no other solution ever presents itself in a convenient way, it should work.

Re: Spoiler Tag

Some boards have a spoiler tag function in bbuilt, but punbb doesn't appear to (or at least there's nothing in the admin settings regarding one). It's possible there's an extention kicking around somewhere however that could be installed, otherwise it'd be up to custom coding wich could take more time. That being said, one advantage of screen readers is that because the text is read sequentially, a spoiler warning can serve the same function as a tag sinse people can stop their screen readers reading at the word "spoiler" This of course doesn't serve the same function as a clickable tag, but it can work farely well and it's what I've done myself when discussing game, film or book spoilers. If there isn't a hard coded way of adding spoiler tags, perhaps a suggestion in the faq that people consider writing "spoiler" on a separate line before discussing spoilers might be an idea.

Smoothgunner, just choose level editor on the main menu.  While working on your custom map, pressing Space will bring up a menu of map properties, including its name and description.  If you want to further customize the map with extra things like new sounds and messages, the readme.txt has some info on that.

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

I do have a testing team, but usually they aren't brought in until I have a functioning game.  When I work on a new game, I start out by building it with simple graphics and no accessibility.  Once things are working how I want, I go back and add in menus, screen reader support, and other accessible features.  That's when I hand it over to my testing team, who start searching for bugs and suggesting changes on things that may be confusing or just flat out not fun.  So my process takes some extra steps, but for me it works the best.  In some ways I probably have an advantage as a fully sighted game developer, but in a few odd ways it is sort of a disadvantage.  Depends on how you look at it.

Spoiler Tag

Whilst writing a post for Aprone's Preludeamals game, I came across a need for a tag which would conceal the text until clicked on. I've seen spoiler tags used in various forums, and they do work well with JAWS and NVDA (admittedly the only two screen readers with which I've any familiarity). I don't know how difficult their implementation is, but is there any chance this could be up for consideration as time permits? It's not by any means critical, but being able to hide spoilers from people who don't want to accidentally see them would be a great feature.Kai

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Stewie, I can't remember how I originally solved it, but I loaded it up to solve it again.  It took me 42 redirections!  haha!Possible spoiler ahead for anyone wanting to do level 16 without even tiny bits of advice:The trick I used myself was to first hit one of the starting switches since I knew I wouldn't want to figure that out at the end.  I also took time to power up more, even though you start with 30 energy.  Those debris spots can potentially take a lot of bouncing around, so I used a switch to block off the arm's exit, making sure it just bounced back and forth between the debris and a wall.  The last thing I wanted was for each bounce to go back through several winding steps, since it would need to repeat that path multiple times.  Partway through smashing my way through debris, I walled off the arm's exit again, and I used a recharge station instead of a normal wall.  That little boost near the end was
what saved me from running out of power.  When all was done I headed straight for the corner I had raised from the starting switch, and that last rat's number was up.I can't really remember how I did it the first time, but I do believe it was a more elegant and thought-out design.  This time around I felt like I was just smashing at the task like a hammer, when the first time I was trying to be very strategic about it.  I hope this helps while still being so vague that you have to still figure out how to actually do any of it.

I was just loading up level 14 to remember how I solved it, so I could maybe give Nin some tips.  Next thing I know, he solved it!    Well done man!I'm not sure yet if I'm going to add more official levels, but I can say for sure that Kai already has 3 challenge maps that he is making custom sounds for.  I think his goal is to show off what is possible when a map maker chooses to use custom sounds, and to customize the game messages.  For those who may not know, if you open up a challenge map, it contains data like the language.txt files some of my other games use.  You can modify what everything is called so that the game fits with whatever theme you're going for.  Maybe you're redirecting a charging T-rex in Jurassic park trying to get it to eat raptors and avoid guests, or perhaps it's a soccer (american foo
tball) game where you're trying to avoid the rival players and reaching their goal.  If people want to give their puzzles some extra flair, the options are there.

The extraction place must be keep defined. At least on the previous version, this works fine.On the new version, the mod overwrites completely the settings defined in vanilla?Previously you can overwrite all things using the clear word, but it applies only for rules... Or if you use in rules, it applies for style too.And... I can't understand the bug in chapter 8 tat you are saying. ¿What change you will rollback? The range system? Correct me if I'm wrong, but so far most people who dislike tolerance for accessible steam-based games have themselves done nothing to increase the chance that steam will become more accessible. As an example, Some people have said in the past that we as a community should take a more agressive stance with valve, claiming that valve's continuous refusal to make steam more accessible infringes their basic human rights. But so far none of those people have actually done anything which causes improvement. So my opinion is that if they're going to talk the talk, they should also walk the walk. hello. You have to take into considoration that this is not about valve. This is so much bigger than one gaming company. Just because a few of them haven't shown any interest, doesn't mean that all of them will be that way. Look at SG. It's a start, and everything has to start somewhere, so this is as good of a start as any other in my opinion.

Re: Message to the audio games community

@Figment, please don't take this as an offense. I am not trying to start a flame war or anything remotely similar. Nobody said we agree with what Valve is doing. Nobody said it was OK for Valve to ignore our requests. But this is not about Valve. We are not advertising the platform, but the games within, which have nothing to do with Valve except for the publishing part. Please do take this into consideration and think about the independant developers that actually devote their time to making these games fully playable.Thanks.

Re: SoundRTS

Here are some incomplete replies.About the overreacting units in chapter 8, after some experiments I have noticed that the problem could be solved by lowering the archers range to less than a third of a square, instead of half a square. Maybe I will just restore the ranges to SoundRTS 1.1 values.About fantasi mod, you need to declare every resource in the map (mine, etc). Moreover, it seems that style.txt is missing the description of the mine, etc. Check jl4 map.

well, my first kind of audio game was my first code which i don't have it anymore. but sam tupy still has it if he didn't lose  it and if he wants i would like him to post a link to the sourcecode so you guys can look  at it. it's called super man. well, it's not about the heroe. was just something which was like a shooter. but i gave it that name because when i made it(3 years ago) my english language was so bad, so i didn't have any suggestions about the name.but i have a little question about all of you who aren't blind. if you aren't blind what's so interesting  to make an audiogame? or let's ask how coud you test it alone? because for example i tested my brother's skills on playing an audio game and he didn't see any sence. i was just curious about this.

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

I think my first fully functional audio game is the brain warp re-creation mind warp, which can be found at the link Below.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/818 … ndWarp.zipI think it displays all text to the title bar, and the message strings aren't too long so you should be able to read it without trouble for those who don't need screen readers.I think I posted the source code on another topic, but you might have to dig for it. It was a pretty good experience. I learned the importance of for loops, arrays, and functions. I've got at least a dozen other projects that were never completed, but served to teach me something new each time.Actually as I was just about to press submit, I remembered the first game I made was a campaign script for swamp. I'm not sure it's still functional with the current version, but I'll post that link as well as the other scripts. Oh yeah, I think I even made a pac-man game with the swamp campaign scripts.Pac-man scripts.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/818 … mpagne.zipMy first campaign script.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/818 … mpagne.zipMy tutorial entry for swamp.ziphttps://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/818 … mpagne.zipThis was the last campaign I was working on, I'm almost certain this is buggy as all get up.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/818 … 0march.zipSo I guess the swamp scripting language was my first entrance into coding. That's pretty cool IMO. Hadn't even realized that until now haha, so thanks Aprone!

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

Hello,It depends what do you mean exactly by the first game.My first real audio game was fast2type, 2007. Unless we count the web version that was in french, 2002.You can find it there http://old.quentinc.net/jeux/clavier-fou/That's also quite a classical concept, for both games your goal is to find which sound is attached to which key, and press the corresponding key as soon as you hear the associated sound. The web version works only in... INternet Explorer 5.5, 6, 7 and 8.IF you are interested in fast2type which was in C, I could try to find it on my old hard disks and put them back in download. Now, if we don't talk about audio games only but just games, I can talk about two main early steps I traversed:Between 1999 and 2001, I started programming games under MS-DOS in C++: a space invader in ASCII, and a few games in graphical mode 320x200: a platformer like old
Mario Land where Mario was just a red circle and ground green squares, another game like Ataris' asteroid where you had a ship at the bottom of the screen, which had to fight against falling rocks (the fun was that a touched rock didn't immediately explode but were first splitted in smaller rocks several times first)...IN 2001, I learned how to make Java applets and for the first time, my games arrive on windows in a web page. There I especially made a brick breaker game that was quite involved, and a more stupid game where you had to avoid being enclosed by walls that the computer randomly dropped on the map.You can look at those later here: http://old.quentinc.net/jeuxUnfortunately they are in french, and, since essentially visual, of course no longer accessible. I even don't know if they still work. I lose my sight in 2003.Before all that, as CAE_Jones, I also had fun making a power point game. It
was an adventure solo RPG-like and the game logic where in the transitions between slides, i.e. if you went twice to the same place but in two different states such as before and after having talked to a NPC, there were two identical slides to reprensent it.Once again it's totally visual and anyway I don't have it anymore. It was still quite long, about 300 slides.

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

Depends how loosely you classify something as a game. And if it has to be quasi-finished.I tried making Powerpoint Presentations and websites into games via things like the hidden slide feature and links, before I managed to program anything. The first one that had sufficient interactivity to feel like a game was a simple maze-thing using Pinky and the Brain icons for the player. When I started programming, I focused mainly on _javascript_, so there are still some edge cases. Does a web page with a multi-choice quiz count as a game?I think this prompt-and-alert-based fighting game might be the first thing I'd call a game that I programmed. (Warning, it tries to start as soon as you open the page. I think you have to type quit to get out of it without playing.)(But I had been making "board games" and "card games" via paper and cardboard for a while before any of the above.)

Re: What was the first game you ever made?

My first game... Rock Paper Scissors I think. It was about a year and 5 months ago and I created it in the span of an hour. Basically you'd just choose rok paper or scissors from a menu and the computer would randomly choose. Then it would just say you won, you lost or you tied and then you'd go back to the main menu.

Re: Arbitrary Forum Rule

Regarding flamewars and the like, I watched a space moo topic as carefully as I could when I was moderating on here and yet was unable to prevent it from escalating as quickly as it did; sometimes topics just spiral completely out of control before the mods are made aware of it.  IN the case of the topic I am refering to, it took someone shooting me a DM on twitter if memory serves me correct to grab my attention.  It is simply unrealistic to believe for any stretch of time that a small group of people... How many do we have now, four?  Five?  Such a small group of people cannot read the high volume of posts on here in their entirety.  I believe this is why the reporting functionality exists.  Not only that, but I confess that sometimes, topics that just, flat out did not interest me did in fact not catch my notice and I skipped over them; I wouldn't be surprised if at least one mod on here now does the same thing. If anyone else on here actually
does have the time and attention span required to read in such a capacity, I'd probably start questioning why that is.Unfortunately, reiterating at least to some degree, it's a hard road to walk.  Posts 1 and 24 are proof that calling too quickly based on judgment alone and how one might be feeling at the time is apparently wrong, though as post 20 kindly reminds us, waiting too long is just as possible and almost as easy.  I sincerely hope Dark's apology on the matter will suffice, since, again, I freely confess just as I did in post 11, I probably would have done the same if not worse in order to keep the topic from hurtling into unwanted realms and been considered "dictatorial."

i'm stuck on challenge 14 now, I can't figure how i'm supposed to kill the rats and recharge at the same time, that stage has a ridiculously low starting energy level compared to how much you have to change path. any hints would be appreciated.

Awesome game aprone, one of these that has a basic idea but a really scarily addictive gameplay, also great proof that these sorts of puzzles are indeed doable in audio with the right overview. It's a  shame I'm so bad at this sort of thing myself .

Re: Debugging Easter Eggs in games?

Grizzly Gulch and Chillingham have lots of debug/cheat commands. Try F5 when you're in a sequence that requires fighting, gathering bugs, etc. and it should complete it for you. Hit S in the bank in Gulch, one time only per visit, to get an extra hundred bucks.

Re: Braillemon status update!

Why is it that in the new beta, you can only get into safron city from the west gate? The other 3 gates are blocked off so you have to take huge detours to get back to the west gate.
