Totally agree with Defender.@fighter2005, more questions:1. What coding experiences do you have? What have you made so far?2. What experiences do you have regarding to making huge projects, organize things, work together with people etc?3. What exactly do you have in mind for an online game?

Yeah, BK3, Shadow rine, two excellent examples of free games with tons of updates after release date, huge games compared to VGStorm's productions in terms of quality and mechanics. And no, I am not a person who is not buying games. I have huge collection on Steam library, Supporting ambitious projects is amazing and yeah, I purchased Manamon just to realise it was a wrong move. The game is amazing just for one playthrough. After that I realised how unbalanced it is, how many repetitive stuff iit contains and the game is definitely over-priced.

Re: News from Valiant galaxy associates

Sounds awesome, I always thought there was more in the format both in terms of what was done with yellow bonnet and traders of known space, and I've always wanted a single player space colonisation game myself. While I do agree it would've been nice if other developers used the guidedog client as a distribution system, the fact that I was able to install all three vga titles with no hassle whatsoever, despite having changed my primary screen reader, operating system, computer, house, county and marital status since the last time I played them was definitely a bonus, and since my login details were remembered from game to game hitting alt l on the client window isn't such a trial, though of course that might not be the case if I was out with my laptop and wifi wasn't available. In terms of self voicing, on the one hand I like that the VGA games do something different and its nice not to listen to Daniel etc, on the other hand, you might consider changing the quality and style of the voicing since some matters sounded a wee bit unclear, though I'm not going to quibble too much over this as  know how much work goes into adding voicing for a game (though if you wanted either myself or the now Mrs. Dark, who has worked as a professional actress to help with voicing we'd be glad to).In terms of difficulty, I wouldn't say the games are too easy so much as they need a few more variable elements to change a player's actions. In traders the player is doing the same thing with 100 cargo space as with five, and having extra guns etc don't really make as much difference, while in interceptor only really the rockets and computer assisted neutrino cannon make sense to use, especially with how you can instantly close with an enemy ship. Again though, none of these are major issues and just require a bit of rebalancing, for example changing the ap needed for commputer assisted shots or the max distance its possible to travel between ships, and maybe upping particle beam damage a bit, plus adding in more ship types, missions and different circumstances which require use of different tactics, EG enemies equipped with scramblers which make computer assisted shots impossible, or fights in different parts of space with different consequences (I always remember the fight in smugglers five hwere I took on a corvette class battleship in a region of electromagnetic instability, and won by negating their ability to withstand the emp's whilst dodging them myself and firing off the odd missile which they were unable to avoid). All of this is just basic balancing though and matters we went into at the time, and is another reason I've loved the idea of extensions to the existing games and systems, actually as I said, I( was surprised how much fun interceptor was when I came back to it, and I'll probably be giving yellow bonnet and Tks another try in the next few days too.

i started over from the save I had, and things seem a bit whack. I am level 32 and no bat or MG so far. The items seem very heavily weighted towards XP boosters, which would be cool, if I had anything other than the knife to kill with. The gun is so weak and has no range, so its pretty well useless. Also, when I get sniper cartridges, I use all of my 5 rounds. It kind of seems silly to be pushing for higher cartridge skill at this point when I have no weapons to use. I am getting rockets and mines and stuff like that, just no bat or MG.

@Kenshiro, it was the combat in silver sword that was problem, that and treasure chests. The game could've been accessible with a bit more work, but the developer has never been that committed, so the most we got were a few promises.  @Defender, the only problem with star traders, is last I checked, there is still on Ios no way of getting the planets in order by faction closest to you. This means you often get stuck somewhere else with no way to get to a friendly area or to be able to complete contracts for factions to keep your rating with them the same. Apparently on the android version there is something that does this, but the planet list just isn't that helpful on Ios.

Re: Harsher action for copy paste

It could also help cut down on this kinda crap if we insisted that extremely buggy/bare bones games went in the dev room.  A comprehensive rule about such a thing won't fit every game because their is no real point at which you can say if a game is too basic, it's kind of a matter of opinion. So I think that you'd want to take it on a case by case basis, and if you were unsure you'd ask other mods for their opinion, just as you would when deciding weather or not to mark a game as illegal.Again though, the link should definitely be removed ASAP, and maybe even lock the topic until a decision has been made, so that you don't have to watch it like a hawk for other links. This type of review process, kinda like registration actually, but only for suspicious games, might help keep things running more smoothly.  Besides, it's just as easy to unlock a topic or move one back to where it came from as it is to lock it or move it to the dev room, and no one worth listening too thinks mods are required to be infallible.Since it's hard to prove otherwise, only two staff are even qualified to examine code that I know of, and communication is often an issue, I'd personally air on the side of suspicion.  You may get a bit of backlash, but not generally by people who can actually vouch for the game personally, and even then their are other places you can spread the news of a new game.I still think that hiding some kind of identifiers in your code/metadata could be useful though, even for open source projects.  I'd really like to see that become the norm, as I think it's just kind of common sense and if you don't go bragging about it everywhere, most of the noobs who create these sudo games won't even know where to begin finding it anyway. It doesn't even need to be something fancy, in fact the simpler the better really, as long as it's effective.

Fighter, your English doesn't seem very good yet, so it's going to be hard to work with you on a project.  Maybe you should go to someone who speaks your language? they could connect you with the help you want.I'm not saying you shouldn't try to make something if your going to do it right, without steeling sounds from other games or only making little changes to existing code, but I would not start with an online game if I were you, those are hard to manage and expensive to keep running.Try smaller offline projects first, but code them from scratch.  Little practice games, then improve your skills from there.  That way even if you do still use someone else's code (only if it's legal of course) at least you can understand it allot more and really add something useful to it.You should probably start with a new name though because no one will trust you after this whole thing.  Ask where to find resources in the dev room if you want to pick up python or something, otherwise just read the BGT manual and do the practice programs. After that, you can come back if you need more help.  Improving your English (if possible) will also help you ask good questions.

Re: News from Valiant galaxy associates

Hi,Jeremy here.We are currently in beta testing for Expanding Known Space.  This will be a strategy game set during the First Interstellar Wars period of our  Valiant Galaxy timeline.  The game uses a grid system similar to TKS, but is greatly expanded.  There's 40 planets on the map, and the game can be won in a number of ways on normal mode.  The most common ways will be a military victory wehre you eliminate all enemy planets and/or ships, a colonization victory where you colonize 60% or more of the galaxy, an economic victory where you control 60% or more of the galactic economy, or a capital control victory where you seize the enemy's capital.  Each condition must be completed for four turns of game time which equals a year of game play.  There's six types of ships, intelligence gathering, and other things to make game play interesting.  The game does not use a civilization style build a unit and wait for it to complete methodology like Time of Conflict or Sound RTS, but uses a purchase units to replace units expended in the current round model.  First there is a purchase phase, then a movement phase, a combat phase, then a placement phase.  The game is probably going to be released in the summer.  We have a few major additions to make, and these will have to be tested.  Price will probably be 19.99 and will be through Guidedog Games like our other titles.  So far, the beta test team has liked it, and I'm enjoying testing it a lot.  This was actually our second game that went into development after Interceptor, but it got put on the back burner for a while.  Once we finished this, we have a couple of mini games in the offing which will depart from a strictly SF format.  Then we'll have to see.  The Traders of Known Space expansion is in process, but its very very complex.  We really like the interaction between map and menu drivien game play that we have with Expanding Known Space, and we've talked about possibly making an Interceptor expansion that would use some of the same ideas to take interceptor into a more dynamic and more difficult arena.  I'll try and check this thread periodically to answer questions.Jeremy

Yep, interceptor might be a little short, but I was surprised myself how much fun tactical turn based space combat was when I fired up the game again, and we've been wanting an expantion to traders of known space ever since the game was first released.

I should probably invest some of this run's helium in looting instead of buying more carpentry. I'll put another level or two into relentlessness as well if I have enough at the end of the run. Gonna push myself as hard as I can.I haven't used any bones on imports. I've been spending them on getting twelve hours of resources straight away—I think you can see where my priorities have been. xDAt this point, I'll suffer if I respec any helium out of carpentry, so I'm not gonna do it. I'm doing sort of okay right now and I'm gonna try just getting prestiges rather than upgrading the eq eight times, since that costs a lot of metal and doesn't really pay off for very long.

Re: Trimps

I'd be kind of hesitant to drop a few levels in carpnetry too, but it really depends on what they'd be going into.  Looting is an amazing perk to invest in this early in the game because it does increase helium gains.  More helium at lower levels = the faster you can raise carpentry and those other insanely expensive perks.  I maxed out meditation immediately just because I often sit at one zone in a map even when I don't necessarily have to.@Darren:  Questions are great and we're happy to answer them, but we can't tell you when you might be ready for something.  We don't know your helium situation, perks, achievement damage, etc.  Void maps scale their level to your current level, so whether you start it at zone 33 or 60 won't matter too much in terms of difficulty.  I generally wait to break the planet before running a voidmap, and if I can't break the planet, I just go as far as I'm able to go on that particular run, spend a day or so stocking up on upgrades and things then running my voidmaps.  There is no right or wrong way to do it though.  Experiment.  have fun!  You're not going to break your game.  Pretty much any decision can be undone, and if there was a decision that couldn't be undone, you could export your save before doing it.

Sound pool in Python

2019-04-30 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : amerikranian via Audiogames-reflector

Sound pool in Python

I'm posting this in here because this is not a game. No, this is a set of scripts that should make your life a bit easier when it comes to multiple sound managing. When I started with python I had an interesting time figuring out sounds. I was a bit annoyed that there was no sound_pool module for it and I had an idea. Let's convert BGT sound_pool to python! And so here we are. Before I give out the links, I want to say one thing: I didn't write it myself. Yes, I translated the entire file from BGT to python, but what made it possible was Carter Tem's sound class. He also figured out why the pan wasn't working as it should and was kind enough to give me the sound positioning functions and his permission for me to release the two files here publicly on the forum. As well as Carter, I would like to thank Sam Tupy for releasing his 3D sound pool which this conversion is based on. Without Sam, the pool will only have 2D functionality, and without Carter, the pool would still have been broken in terms of pan. Thank you both.So what do you need to run this?First, you will need a sound_lib, which I will link to after this post. That or you can go check out Carter's Github and find it yourself. Then you need to import the sound_pool within your project. It comes with an instantiated object of size 100 named p, which you can find at the bottom of the sound_pool.py file. Finally, to use the sound_pool functions, you must first set it's distance and it's pan, I will give the template code below.from sound_pool import *
p.max_distance=50
p.pan_step=2 #Consider raising the value
p.volume_step=2There is no read me. If you really need one, go check out the BGT manual or Sam's package, though that one still assumes you worked with the sound_pool before.Lastly, the links.Tiny upload link, guaranteed to stayDropbox link, not guaranteed to stay forever but should work for a whileSam's 3D sound pool, this is what I converted to pythonThe sound_lib, this is what you need in order for the sound class to function properlyAgain, thanks goes to Carter and Sam for making this possible.A quick note: Some of this has not been tested well, so if you find an error do let me know so I can fix it. Seems to work fine when I messed around with it. Also, optimizations and performance improvements tips are greatly appreciated.Quick note 2:  The sound pool already assumes that you are in your sounds folder. So for example, if I had the folder named steps within my sounds and I want the sample to play step one, I would do steps/step1.ogg as a function parameter. I tried to come up with a way to change this, but I haven’t found an easy solution.

Puppy1 is a simpler game, but still involves aircraft. Also, for your notice, eurofly isn't a flight sim, it's an arcade flying game.Greetings Moritz.

2019-04-30 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : Sam_Tupy via Audiogames-reflector

Re: A question about reasons... think before posting

@darter, about speed, make a loop in BGT that executes 10 million times and assigns a couple vars and stuff, then attach a timer. You will see that this same loop will run considerably slower in python. For compilation, the theory is of course that you test your script, then you compile and all works. Unfortunately, things get a bit trickier than that, especially when you want to protect your code with cython which makes pyinstaller unable to read imports to include the right modules and a! And another thing I never got to mension because I ran out of time, just randomly on the subject of python, with onefile, everything extracts to a temp dir when you run it, and then deletes itself when you close the app. This accounts for longer launch times in python than BGT and major disc overhead. With that said though I really do enjoy python. As for languages compiling to machine code, I think there was a misunderstanding. By machine code, I mean core machine code, like assembly instructions. Take CS, for example. It's a very widely used language, but you can run it through a decompiler and in some cases even get comments back, as well as variables and other stuff, and source code that you can actually recompile, on account of CS going through the middle phase of IL code which can be easily broken. The only way to make python compile into machine code is to use cython to first convert it to C. Otherwise, you compile to python bytecode. I do believe languages like pure basic and go, for example, do however compile directly into assembly instructions, which are very hard to propperly disassemble because of how little needed information they contain. I do agree though that if you want a challenge in python you can choose to make your own library rather than installing an existing one. Though in BGT, people literally will tell me no sam it is not possible to read DLL structures. It is not possible to make a fast scripting engine. It is not possible to get 3d audio working. As a person with very very low self confidence, it is extremely refreshing to be able to sit down and be like "oh... yeah?" With python or other mainstream languages you have virtually 0 chance of being the first to write something. However this last reason is more of a personal one for me and wouldn't really contribute all that much to public projects.

As much as I like other programming languages, for me what makes me not to drop BGT is its executable (and the program's size too) and9. BGT has a very simple and easy to use audio engine.Yes, there are other audio engines much better than bgt's one, but they are morecomplex to use or lack functionality, like in Pygame a pitch function. Phillip managed to just get it right, making it simple so that everyone could understand it and use it correctly.

response to reports

Hi,I was wondering if at all it would be possible, either through pm or through email, to receive a response to a report?I realise this could be heavy on the moderators, but I am talking, perhaps, just an automated:"Your report has been seen by the administration team. Thank you for submitted."If you implemented an optional comment field, too, it could say:"The administrator had no further comments."or:"The administrator says: Actually, you are a complete muppet because what you reported is an icecream van, from which I have now bought a hotdog."I feel this would greatly improve staff to user interaction. Thanks!

Re: A question about reasons... think before posting

Hello,Amusingly, for the first year, before the issues of virus detectors getting sensative, I was in the "bgt is fine leave me alone" category. There was only two reasons behind this:1. I knew what I was talking about with BGT. It was simple to understand, has a nice layout with braces, and the error messages are generally amusing, in a geeky kind of way.2. Fear. With a new language comes fear of screwing up. BGT is a beginners language. It stops you from screwing up too badly. It's not that easy to use up all the memories computer, corrupt the hard drive, or blow up a spacecraft using BGT. Sure, you can do it, but it's not *easy( to do.To that end though, I wanted to comment on post 3 a bit, and go over my personal experience having switched from bgt to other languages:1. the challenge: I can see that. I like a challenge myself, but so far python, and other languages, are still providing that without limiting myself too much.2. Compilation: Well... BGT's compile didn't just compile. It error checked, then compiled into an exe file. Pyinstaller just does the latter. that's why you run the script first as a python file, to error check, then you pyinstaller it. Which kind of ties into number 1, great challenge!3. I can't disagree with this at all. BGT's compression is amazing to see, and i do miss it. Though I also know that other languages can beat BGT, I'm just not quite brave enough to learn them. YET!4. I'd say a good 85 percent of languages compile to computer machine code, and for those that don't, wrappers are available that force them too. Even python can be forced, I *think*, It's just not as easy as BGT. Even with BGT, advanced users reported reverse engineering programs to be laughably easy.5. Ehh. Language dependant but fair enough. Python pretty much comes with all that bundled too, you just have to know where to look, but... Fair enough.6. I *completely* disgaree on this one. I've not come across anything (yet), that BGT does faster than python. I'm open to being disproved! Also, long live cython.7.  Again, I agree with this. the sound library thing is a big reason to stay bgt for a lot of users. But honestly, writing your own sound wrapper is a good excersise to test your understanding of the programming language, and once you've done that, it's just the same as bgt.Hopefully that didn't come across as me being nitpicky, it is just my personal experience from a different perspective.I'd say out of all of these, the biggest BGT stay reasons are:easy to compile, easy to learn, sound library support, speech support for screen readers, fear.Reasons not to though, are of course:speed, flexibility, virus checkers, cross platform support, native TCP in networking, and more!

Re: A question about reasons... think before posting

For me, there are a couple things that allowed BGT to have a pull on me for a while. I am certainly glad with python now, but I will still use BGT occasionally. For quite a few reasons.1. The chalenge: With BGT, you won't find help on stackoverflow when you want to solve a problem. With BGT, there have been many things I have managed to do that I had been told would be impossible. Things such as writing a scripting engine that is actually somewhat advanced, reading DLL structures, etc. I like using BGT sometimes because it places me in a limited environment and with it's limited dll support and other things, I can try to break it and make it do new things despite everyone telling me how impossible it was. It's just for fun, and if it's stable sometimes I can use it in games like stw, but I feel that it helps me become more intelegent sometimes because in python, you install a lib, you import it and use it, and your done. with BGT, you make a lib, understand the internals, and get it working in a stable fassion and you experience the warm feeling if doing something that others constantly told you wasn't possible.2. Compilation. With python, you install pyinstaller, compile your script, and hope it works. Same with most other languages. With BGT, you click compile script. Some languages like pure basic have a cool compilation process, but with a lot of low level languages, you could write a small application that is 20 lines of code that took 10 minutes to write or less, then find yourself spending 2 hours trying to make pyinstaller work with a phinicky library.3. Executable size: With BGT, you get pretty small executables that you can send to people and they can just run and play. With pyinstaller, you get executables with a size of at least 4 MB. It's not a huge deel, and languages such as CS and CPP can make quite small exectables, but it's just something else to be considered.4. Code protection: With BGT, you compile and send, and you have rather little worry of someone decompiling your code and steeling it. With python or CS or nearly any other language that does not compile to machine code, which is a lot, code protection usually takes a vast amount of creativity.5. Existing tools: When making a small sidescroller, BGT just has everything you need to get working quick. With other languages, you need to implement your own sound, keyboard, networking, sound protection, etc etc.6. Speed: BGT is generally fast. In some cases, faster than some operations in languages like python. You can cythonize sure, but you just askd for potential reasons to stay with it, so I'm just trying to provide some ideas. In languages that are just as fast or faster, you usually need to learn a lot more to get them to work.7. Ease of use: With BGT, you make a main function, you make a sound object, call the load and play_wait methods, and there you go you got a sound player. This as well as other game tasks are much harder in other much larger languages.8. All together: When you combine the above reasons together, and I'm sure I could come up with more but I am out of time, you got a pretty quick language that compiles easily, is easy to learn and use, has tools and somewhat ok protection, etc. You can see how to someone who just wants to make a quick game, it does exude quite a pull.Like I said, I now use python and other languages and I am very happy. I am not trying to worship BGT or anything lol. I hope I dont's tart any arguments, I hope I have somewhat satisfactorily answered your question.

Re: A question about reasons... think before posting

The answer to that question can be complex, and isn't always rooted in stubbornness or foolishness. Whats always hot and new isn't always the best, or most comfortable tool for the job. Some people still work with [MAC OS 9], some still use [MS-DOS], or even [make games] for DOS, or use DOS based [Word Processing] software. People even still make monochrome GameBoy games, because they enjoy the hardware limitations and challenge.Thw only true constant here is that languages, software, and hardware never really die, they just become niche. There are some advantages and disadvantages to this, as with many things, but one shouldn't judge others for their choice of tools, even though they are entitled to their opinions.

A question about reasons... think before posting

***ATTENTION!!!***To anyone smart enough to know what they are doing, I urge you to read this carefully and think rather than act when you're posting. The last thing I want this to turn into is a giant drama. I want to have a civil discussion and hopefully learn from it.So, my question is this: Let's say you are a BGT user. You coded some games, doesn't matter how complex they are, and you've been told the following:"You should switch to language W because of X, Y, and Z"I won't put in a language and the reasons, allowing you to fill in the blanks with your own imagination, but that language must be different than bgt. What will be your reasons for refusing such a request? What does BGT offer that you think the other languages do not?I am not asking for reasons as to why should you switch from BGT to, say, c#, I am asking what will be your reason not to do so.This question came up after a certain user expressed a rather strong dislike of anything but BGT and refused to provide any good reasons as to why they love BGT and that's the only thing they will use. I am hoping to hopefully understand the possible reasons behind such a  refusal so that in the future we can possibly provide a smoother transition from BGT to more complex languages.

If you're using any external libraries such as sound_lib, copy them into the dist folder along with any assets you have, such as sounds, data, etc. There is a way to have pyinstaller copy everything for you, but I haven't been able to figure it out. If someone can chime in, I'd be grateful. Also, a note: You might want to type pyinstaller main_script.py --onefile rather than pyinstaller main_script.py --onefile --windowed while you're testing. This way, if the game happens to traceback, you can cmd the exe and see the traceback yourself.Typically, I only do --windowed only when releasing the game, as there is always a chance that I get something nasty while testing.

Hi,The Joystick_init function no longer exists. Instead, use the builtin joystick functions in your programming language of choice.

Re: Is AudioVault permanently down or is it just temporarily?

Hi, Thank you,the best in the world and Ciri. and really, I totally get you, so no need to fret, just sorry that you don't have access to ADV when you are free to listen to it. Been in the same boat as you many times, so I take no offence or feel pressured. Its really good to see / heare that people like and enjoy the audiovault, As I said previously, makes all the effort that we all put in worth it. and I am sure the other donators, content contributors and specially uploaders feel the same. and in the end its there for you to enjoy,so if you are getting enjoyment out of it, our objective is achieved.CheersGrryf

So, how about starting a new translation? In particular I would like to work on a Serbian version of this screen reader, but not sure how would we go about making it official since the dev is not speaking English..

Well, now hopefully that won't be too much of a problem anymore. I might also make it so you don't get allies until level 50 or so.

Re: question regarding reaper and envelopes

paid reaper courses but no procedure really being described... well.. lets try something simple,1. Open a project, then Insert just a song or whatever2. Select the track and press control applications or open the second context menu in mack (command 2) and enable pan envelope.3. Select the track again, press control L to find the pan envelope for the track, then Insert a point (using control shift I) then alt shift E to edit, and Set pan 70% left at around bar 5, beat 2.4. Do the same as above but then set pan to 40% right at around bar 10, beat 1Now, navigate between points using alt j or k, you should have three of them. Is this right?
