Re: General fighting game banter

Gotta disagree. Tekken only enables movement forward and back, plus side stepping so it's not complete free movement. I don't win all the time online, but I certainly don't get creamed either. I hold my own and any mistakes I make aren't anything that won't happen to anyone else. lol But sighted people have an advantage in all fighting games when it comes to movement, and Tekken does have a much more heavy reliance on being able to mentally track your movements and your opponent because of bad sound positioning. Samurai Shodown is definitely more newbie friendly. Tekken definitely takes more time to get good at. Tekken is like the ultimate competetive fighting game. lol

Re: Difference between frames and milliseconds?

[cont]But converting from MS to frames is something I generally avoid. I still track movement and actions in seconds, partly because when I was working in Java, I got wildly different framerates on different versions / computers (which is why you had to specify frame length and units when running my java games from command line).So I just save the frame length, preferably as a constant but sometimes it has to be a variable (as with the Java issues). For clock.bgt, iirc, this is saved in the clock object's delay property. With pygame.time.clock, you are on your own. I've been saving the framerate as a global variable.Anyway, framerate is in frames/seconds. If you want the number of seconds, do 1/framerate.60fps = 60f / 1s, or 60f / 1000ms.so the time per frame is 1/60s, or 1000/60ms, or 16ms / 17ms (depending on how you round, and fwict, Pygame likes to round up).I prefer to calculate how much time passes once, in the main update function, then have individual methods for updating game-objects take the time as a parameter. That way, if anything screwy happens, or we need to do something weird like fast-forward or rewind, we still get the benefits of frames.So I usually define an action's duration in seconds, and the update function takes how much time passes between frames as a parameter, and I just update it in that way.

There will be more games which use these.2. (This question is about pack creation) How do I find out the BPM for the song I want to use in the pack?You don't. You just use the pack editor and then it will play each level, you need to press space along the beat. Make sure the loops are correct or I might have to reject your pack.3. Re: Difference between frames and milliseconds?

2020-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : CAE_Jones via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Difference between frames and milliseconds?

Yes, frames are the mainstream solution, and have more or less always been. This is indeed one of the most troublesome things I notice people learning wrong from BGT. I tried doing it the BGT way, with timers for everything, in Sengoku Jidai, and with menus blocking everything ... and I kept failing to stop timers and this caused so many problems, like it being easy to starve / drown everyone by just pressing v and waiting.I think maybe one of the reasons frames come so intuitively to video games, and not audio games, is that video has always been done in frames, as a series of images displayed quickly enough to resemble motion. This is why you hear about framerate shenanigans with animation (24fps has been industry standard, but hand-drawing that is thrice as costly as 8fps, so lots of cheap anime use to go for 8fps whenever possible). For games, they had to build around the refresh rate of the hardware, which worked in frames due to RAM limitations: 200×300 pixels = 6px, and in the old days, storing all that in RAM, especially when televisions were made with video and its framerates in mind, was ridiculously expensive. So they had technically complex scan-patterns, limited colors, over-sized pixels, and 8x8 tiles, and games had to incorporate that into their timing. That, and if your animations work like any other animation...But, really, timers create a huge technical hurtle. The more realistic you want to be, and the more consistent you want to be, the more you need to standardize the time that things take to occur. Especially today, when computers have evil, schemy minds of their own, and when networks are quite chaotic, and you can never predict who will have how much lag when, you can't rely on timers not making a mess when your antivirus decides to ask if you're busy mid game, or when some random system service and a screen reader get in a fight, or when you get a Twitter message, or whatever. With frames, you guarantee that every entity in the game is on the same page, by standardizing how much time passes between updates: at 50fps, you're treating every update as though 20ms have passed since the last update, period. No matter how long anything in the game takes, or what lag comes from outside, everything stays in sync.And woe to anyone trying to use timers for online multiplayer. Getting online games to stay in sync is hard enough without letting milliseconds of drift accumulate.Java and _javascript_ timers are basically tickers with callbacks (or what passes for that in Java and its "everything is classes" attitude). You set a time, and it calls the function/method. You don't even write your own loop, because the timer does it in a separate thread. With Pygame.time.clock, you still need a loop iirc.I like the Java way, although you must keep track of your framerate, and take care if you ever decide to change it. To the extent that, if I ever did upload game.bgt in any of those include archives, that's what it's for (that and eventifying key presses).

General fighting game banter

Hi.So, before we will derail other topics with games that clearly do not fit, I thought about just creating a topic where everything fighting game wise can, basically a pool of opinions, tips, tricks or what ever.So, I guess I'll give it a start.I am currently thinking about getting Tekken 7 while it's on sale. The standard edition is on sail for about 10 euros and the ultimate edition is available for 23 instead of the usual price of 90 euros.Thing is, single player content isn't that rich and I just suck at online play. I don't know why it is, but I am never able to figure out a fighting game so far that I can actually win matches online. i like to play fighting games for fun a d casual game play, and I think tekken isn't the game for me.On another note, Samurai Shodown will get a pc release this spring, only problem is that it seams to be an Epic Store exclusive, so we need to see how that turns out.So, let the fun begin.Greetings Moritz.

Hi.at Assault well yeah the dialogue certainly isn't that high in quality, but for a fighting game it's still quite ok, it gets the job done and it does get entertaining.I do like the character banter before a fight for example in the arcade ladder. Yeah, some of it is sorta strange, but generally it's cool to see how certain characters react to others, I really would like to see this in other fighters.BTW, I will create a generall fighting game banter topic so we don't need to derail this topic.Greetings Moritz.

Re: the thing with jumping in audiogames, just why

2020-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : CAE_Jones via Audiogames-reflector

Re: the thing with jumping in audiogames, just why

I have no idea. If you can spam a higher horizontal velocity while jumping, we'd all get around like grasshoppers.Math time: how long one stays airborne from a vertical jump is dependent on one's initial velocity. The formula for distance traveled is dx = v0×t + 1/2×a×t^2, but that's a pain for jumping, since you have a symmetrical curve due to gravity, so I simplify it with these two:v = v0 + a×tdx = 1/2×a×t^2, when v0 is 0 (which it is at the peak of a jump).Then I just decide how much airtime I want, or how high the character should be able to jump, and solve for v.So if you want 1s of airtime, that means you're at v = 0 at 0.5s. For normal earth Gravity, a = 9.81m/s^2, and I usually round to 9.8 or 10 because even mainstream games exaggerate jumping a little for playabil"ity, so why not?So 9.8m/s^2 × 0.5s = 4.9m/s. That means 4.9m/s is how fast you're moving both when you leave the ground, and when you land.Your max height would be 1/2×a×t^2, and since t is 0.5, we get 1/8×9.8 =1.225m. Since we like to horizontal jump and also round things, maybe making v0 5 would be easier, but this seems reasonable-ish.But then there's horizontal jumping. The thing is, you're jumping with the same velocity, just in a different direction. Games who get this weird tend to keep the same vertical velocity, then either don't change or increase the horizontal velocity gained from movement. Every game design tutorial I've read does the exact opposite, and have pressing left/right while airborne give the character less horizontal velocity than they would on foot, but we're ignoring how people can move in real life: without something to push off, horizontal movement in air depends more on how you jumped than on what you do while airborne.Say you jump at a 45dg angle (pi/4). Sin and cos of that angle are both 0.707, so that conveniently means we get the same value for horizontal and vertical velocity: our v0 of 4.9 × 0.707. Since I don't feel like multiplying that many digits, let's round to 5×0.7, which is 3.5.Now, even if your run speed is 4m/s, and you only get 5m/s by jumping, your horizontal velocity is only 3.5m/s. And your airtime is reduced to 3.5/9.8 doubled, or a little more than 0.7s. That cuts your max height to 1/2×9.8×0.35^2, which is a little over 0.75m.If you jump a at a lower angle, say 30dg (pi/6), your vertical velocity would be even lower (0.5 × 5 = 2.5), and your horizontal higher (0.866 × 5 = 4.33, which is slightly higher than our default run speed of 4m/s). Realistically, jumping like this requires a moment to crouch to build up the energy for that much velocity, but since when do games bother with jump animations anymore, especially audio games?So if you can insta-jump while running, ok, this is how you'd exploit it for increased speed. Notice the airtime, though: we cut v0 in half, so airtime also gets cut in half. So our max height becomes 1/2×9.8×0.25×0.25, or 1/32×9.8, or 10/32 if we want to round. That's close to 1/3m. So this would be high enough to jump pits if the pit is no more than 2m across, and things under 0.3m high (you're on a curving path, though, so something that's 0.25m high directly in front of you still hits you), but anything higher than that (like most enemies, even dwarf-sized ones) are still in your way.Or, to ditch the math for the Google bots who made it this far: you have a specific path that you follow based on the angle of your jump. The three that I went over can map neatly to vertical jump, walking-jump, and running jump. The last one gets you not even a foot off the ground, but does give you a burst of speed, if we ignore the crouch/windup.So Psycho Strike's use of horizontal jumping as a dash makes some sense, but it shouldn't make the character basically invincible. It makes a little more sense in The Gate, but only for the smaller enemies and threats, like rats and slime-waves, not for zombies and vampires. If we're super-jumping at 6m/s, everything changes, and balance gets weird again.

Re: the thing with jumping in audiogames, just why

A lot of games encourage jumping because if you hammer a left or right arrow key, you'll move very quickly through the air, while on the ground, your walk speed is set. Games like BK3 get around this by 1. having speed drinks and 2. having you not able to clear huge distances while jumping. There was a game I played for a bit last year, I no longer remember what it was, but it was basically a side-scroller beat-em-up hybrid; I quit playing the game when I got to a level where there were random pits that if you fell into one, you died, but for whatever reason you couldn't just move slowly...I believe the pits only opened if you ran quickly or some such. It was confusing, and I dropped the game. Anyway, that game had enormous, ridiculous, over-the-top hangtime. Like I could hold the arrow key and clear 20-25 spaces in two seconds flat, when on the ground it's more like 5-6 in the same time.

Ah, I got it, so you mean with the game community there, just like how we organize "wolfgames" with the WEBL community.(another online game)It's just that I generally don't like playing level based games or MUDs, so I never even tried Ardwolf yet.Sure, I could, and maybe will join Ardwolf to play werewolf with its regular players, but when it comes to online games and MUDS, I still prefer playing werewolf type games with those, who I share my favorite games with.For example, WEBL community just starts another "wolfgame", so right now I will play on 2 websites at the same time even, for I am already playing a game on mafiauniverse.This means my wish came through, I can play werewolf type games almost all the time now, almost whenever I wish, especially on the mafiauniverse website, which its very helpful and cooperative staff already made significantly more screen reader friendly, (it's a very pleasent experience how hard they try to make their game more accessible to screen reader users, they keep adding settings, filters, keyboard shortcut commands, all I need to do is ask for them), and since they are regularily running more games monthly, I guess I will stick with them for now, they sure deserve it, for making their games already much easier for me to play.

Just a quick note, as I've been messing with fire controls, beam weapons and related things.It's a good idea to have multiple fire controls on a ship if you want to be able to target multiple targets or missile salvos at the same time. That being said, mixing tons of different beam weapons without a specific plan for how you're going to use each of them is still a questionable idea.Also, just as a note, when I fired my lasers at Mercury your cruisers were utterly wrecked within five seconds or so by massive beam weapons fire. Just as a heads up. It's not a very survivable position to be in, firing at a planet.

Re: Galactic Colonies: Public accessible alpha version available

This is a bug that apparently affects some devices, and not others, I found This redit post, which mentions it. When I originally installed both the standard 1.24, and test flight 1.25 versions of the game, the research timer, and indeed all other game timers would only work when the ap was actually on screen. What I mean is, I'd set an eight hour research project going, play for half an hour and the timer would say I had seven and a half hours to go, then I'd close the ap, or watch an add video, and when I looked again, the timer would be back at the full 8 hours. This also meant I couldn't get any of the daily login rewards bonuses, or even switch to another ap and let my colony just produce. I could just about get around this by turning on screen curtain, muting my phone and leaving galactic colonies running over night, but this was not an ideal solution, especially when research times got over 8 hours.This bug was believed to have been solved in the latest version 1.27, and sure enough, when I started I could set research going, close the ap, and open and the timer would be at the same time. However, I thought it rather odd that 8 hours after my research completes, I get no notifications that it was finished. I check the ap and it now says I have something like 1256 hours to go.. That's where it is at now, it says I have several thousand hours of research time to go, which for all intents and purposes makes all research utterly and completely impossible, also, still no  daily login bonuses either. this combined with struggles with the map is why I'm leaving my game on hiatus for now, since playing is a wee bit more frustrating than fun at the second, though hopefully the bugs will be fixed in a version or two, and the accessibility will get better.

WARN_PRINTS("Adding " + path + ", base=" + path.get_base_dir());
printf("c_str=%s\n", path.get_base_dir().c_str());
cookie = add_dll_directory(path.get_base_dir().c_str());
}The paths look fine, but then I get:c_str=ZReally interesting how that c_str() is just "z" and, assuming I'm not botching my printf, if add_dll_directory is really just adding "Z" to the path then of course subsequent lookups would fail.Any idea what's going on here? Surely there isn't a \0 after the first character in this string...surely...Also tried replacing / with \ in the path, no change.Thanks for all the help so far.

Hi there. Thank you for the swift response. I'm still a little unsure about stats. Is it set in stone that a level1 warrior will have the same stats everytime there is a level1 warrior? That being said, how does his con modifier give him 32 hp, whereas my mage's con grants him 15 total? Are the modifiers different for each class? How are mana and stamina also calculated per class?I was also wondering if an ability can be created that is dependent on certain things. For example, creating a shield bash ability would be neat, but it'd need to depend on if the warrior has a shield equipped. @239, I have a decent sound library from assisting with a soundpack in a mud I used to play. Some were free royalty sounds, others are from youtube and other libraries, etc.

You are required to pay if you want Bitlocker encryption and Windows Sandbox. Right now you can get Windows 10 Pro for $13 from a Redmond Pie-approved discount store, so it is hardly breaking the bank. Windows 10 was never truly free, and if you honestly thought the free upgrade was the end of the road, think again. The reality is, most upgrade, find Windows 10's features attractive but oh their system isn't gonna handle it. Most just buy a new system. It would've been a totally effective way to reel customers in were it not for the fact that MS backfired by practically shoving it down our throats. In the end though its really become a great operating system though, and Windows 7 is finally dead, so the end justifies the means.

Re: a program to make tts skits and simple?

Nope. Balabolca isn't too complicated once you get the hang of it. You just type the voice in the box, the combo box allows you to switch voice and the tab next to the combo box allows you to switch between sapi 4, 5, etc. To save as audiofile its control w. Thing is, all of the tts programs have a very similar layout, if you know your way around one, getting the hang of other similar interfaces is stupidly easy, you just need to get used to the interface of balabolca. That, or you might wanna try speakonia, but something like what your specifically asking for doesn't exist for various reasons. 1: Tts skits are typically more complex than just voices. They have sounds usually, and at times also music. 2: The dialog is the second part of why this isn't possible. Dialog will always be different from skit to skit. Having the program your speaking of, if it was to be that simple, would require a extremely powerful AI that could predict what you are writing or the dialog you want to put... I mean, there are just way too many variables and things that change to make this possible. I mean, it would be nice sure, however on the other hand it would very likely take away creativity as people wouldn't need to write the dialog but rather choose from a list of prompts or predictions which would be earily similar to each other.

Difference between frames and milliseconds?

2020-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : amerikranian via Audiogames-reflector

Difference between frames and milliseconds?

So, I got into an interesting dilemma.I always saw timers done as milliseconds, i.eif movetimer.elapsed >= 1000:
#Do stuffBut, if I was trying to limit the game to, say, 60 fps, how would that change? Do frames impact timers at all?Someone told me that video game companies measure their time in frames, i.e, the previous if statement would be written as...if movetimer.elapsed >= 60:
#Do stuffIf so, how would the conversion from milliseconds to frames would look like?I know about pygame.time.Clock.tick and about pygame.time.Clock.get_ticks, but I fail to realize how the pieces work together.So, yeh. Is it true that video game companies base their timers on frames rather than milliseconds? If so, why do those who develop in BGT not follow this practice? Moreover, if the frames over milliseconds deal is true why is the BGT tutorial not appearing to that standard?I hate to point fingers here, but I started in BGT and am now really disliking how much it left out for me to learn about now. Thanks, simplification

Re: Migrated Godot accessibility to GitHub

2020-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Migrated Godot accessibility to GitHub

LoadLibraryEx is actually a magic macro that expands to either LoadLibraryExA or LoadLibraryExW based on whether something I forget how to set is set in the C headers.  The only difference is whether or not it's expecting a string that's unicode (I think UTF-16 codepoints using wchar_t for the W variant).  But in terms of behavior they're otherwise the same, at runtime both variants are always available, and Microsoft documents without the A and/or W suffix (though confusingly not all functions have the A/W suffix).I know that the DLL path settings can propagate downward otherwise Libaudioverse couldn't have worked in Python, since the only reason it works at all is that Python is setting this up when you load with ctypes so that the DLL you load can in turn find the DLLs it might want next to itself.  It might be worth digging into the Python interpreter to find their LoadLibraryEx calls for C extensions and see if they add anything you don't have here.Oddly, for paths, a straight-up string substitution does actually work.  Windows doesn't allow / in file names.  In fact Windows has a lot of restrictions on what can go in file names, one of the things making it different from everything else, but it works to your advantage here since you're not going to corrupt a file name replacing the separator.The ultimate patch to Tolk or something like it is to make it always use absolute paths to the DLLs it wants to load.  That may be your best option if you're willing to patch Tolk, but C/C++ file path handling is of course special, especially if you want it to work with non-English paths, since on Windows you've got UTF16.  But you should be able to grab the path of the tolk dll, then do all the paths relative to it, and you're done.I can't help too much further. I haven't had to deal with this in a long time, and never to this level.

Re: Migrated Godot accessibility to GitHub

@17 Thanks for your pointers. I tracked down the callsite of LoadLibraryEx (they're using LoadLibraryExW and I'm not immediately sure of the differences,) made some tweaks, and nothing seems to have worked. Here's the code. Does anything look odd?I tried a few things already--using LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DLL_LOAD_DIR (which provided no speech at all,), removing the code that removed the newly-added DLL path in case something was attempting to asynchronously load another DLL after the path to said DLL was removed. I added the WARN_PRINTS line, and the path to the base does appear correct, with the minor knit that it uses / rather than \. Are these APIs smart enough to figure that out, and if not, is there an easy way to convert path delimiters? I'm not even going to try on my own since I know better. Edit: Looking at the docs, it does say to use \, but it does seem to load the initial DLL. Surely a straight-up string substitution is full of footguns, but I'm not finding an API function to do the conversion for me.I'm also looking at how Tolk loads its libraries:ScreenReaderDriverNVDA::ScreenReaderDriverNVDA() :
  ScreenReaderDriver(L"NVDA", true, true),
  #ifdef _WIN64
  controller(LoadLibrary(L"nvdaControllerClient64.dll")),
  #else
  controller(LoadLibrary(L"nvdaControllerClient32.dll")),
  #endif
...Maybe this is where the load is failing? Wondering if perhaps it doesn't inherit the paths set up in the parent? Would a patch to use LoadLibraryEx possibly fix this, or would it introduce more issues on Tolk's end?Anyhow, the code:Error OS_Windows::open_dynamic_library(const String p_path, void *&p_library_handle, bool p_also_set_library_path) {

String path = p_path;

if (!FileAccess::exists(path)) {
//this code exists so gdnative can load .dll files from within the executable path
path = get_executable_path().get_base_dir().plus_file(p_path.get_file());
}

typedef DLL_DIRECTORY_COOKIE(WINAPI * PAddDllDirectory)(PCWSTR);
typedef BOOL(WINAPI * PRemoveDllDirectory)(DLL_DIRECTORY_COOKIE);

PAddDllDirectory add_dll_directory = (PAddDllDirectory)GetProcAddress(GetModuleHandle("kernel32.dll"), "AddDllDirectory");
PRemoveDllDirectory remove_dll_directory = (PRemoveDllDirectory)GetProcAddress(GetModuleHandle("kernel32.dll"), "RemoveDllDirectory");

bool has_dll_directory_api = ((add_dll_directory != NULL) && (remove_dll_directory != NULL));
DLL_DIRECTORY_COOKIE cookie = NULL;

if (p_also_set_library_path && has_dll_directory_api) {
WARN_PRINTS("Adding " + path + ", base=" + path.get_base_dir());
cookie = add_dll_directory(path.get_base_dir().c_str());
}

p_library_handle = (void *)LoadLibraryExW(path.c_str(), NULL, (p_also_set_library_path && has_dll_directory_api) ? LOAD_LIBRARY_SEARCH_DEFAULT_DIRS : 0);
ERR_FAIL_COND_V_MSG(!p_library_handle, ERR_CANT_OPEN, "Can't open dynamic library: " + p_path + ", error: " + format_error_message(GetLastError()) + ".");

if (cookie) {
remove_dll_directory(cookie);
}

return OK;
}Other advice on how to debug this is welcome. Thanks for the pointers--my C++ is a couple decades outdated, and Win32 is entirely new ground.

Re: Doom: Toby Accessibility Mod V3.0

I'm curious how far you can get in the game using the mod. First person shooters usually aren't my thing, but doom has nostalgic value to me, so maybe when I get a new pc and steem account, this may be worth looking into. Also, talking menus dont matter as much to me as do menu clicks and whether or not they wrap, but clicks most of all.

what does the directors cut have that the podcast version doesn't have? does anyone have the extras? do they add anything to the story or are they just fillers? I'm thinking of getting the extras too.

Did you go to the pub first? If you did, he should be in your party. Also, when you entered the Battle Tower, it should've made the sound and said that he joined you. If it didn't than you should go to the pub and that should trigger the sub-event.

Re: python spaces, I still don't get how it works.

@12Sadly not in the real world, no.  You're right that it solves it for your personal projects but it doesn't solve it in a professional context in which you have to adhere to the standards of the project.  If you don't believe me I can probably still dig up my Rust compiler PRs where people literally commented on missing spaces around -> in function declarations, among other things, and work can't use an auto-formatter because none of them actually support C well enough unless you're using Google or Mozilla formatting.  If you ever want to go beyond audiogames as a programmer, you don't get to sweep formatting under the rug, and automated tools won't really solve it for you most of the time either.Suffice it to say that a vast number of us handle indentation fine, some of us learn to use it as a tool to help with brace counting, and any decent editor will help as much with Python indenting as your "I can just format with a button" examples.  None of us are literally pressing space 20 times on every line or anything like that.Saying that whitespace being part of the syntax of the language is why you're choosing not to use a language is like saying that you don't eat vegetables because the sky is blue.  In terms of actually getting anything done, whether the language is indentation-based or not doesn't make a difference either way.  You need much weirder whitespace rules than Python before tools and screen readers stop helping you sufficiently that you don't have to think about it ever again after a few days of adjustment for the rest of your time as a programmer, and since an adjustment period and then it's fine forever describes every piece of assistive technology ever, whatever, it's not a realistic issue and it shouldn't factor in to the decision-making process.

Re: Sable Alpha is here!–free to download for Public alpha testing!

I'm getting a strange bug with a quest. A trigger object gives my character the quest completion key, but it's still not showing as complete. I've tested it out a bunch of times but I'm still getting the same result. Is it because the key is given on a different map to the npc that gives the quest? Or should that not matter.

Re: python spaces, I still don't get how it works.

actually that makes sense. But here's the thing, if I write any code, I'll just put it into my private code editor, click indent with python or pb or c, those are the ones supported for now and voila. All done.

This seems to be a pain on both Windows and iOS. Does anyone know how to do it? You used to be able to get a basic description of the emoji (thumbs up, down, etc), but that's not the case anymore.
