Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk

I have a Book Port Plus and I'm disappointed the software support was dropped so quickly. I liked the idea of the Wi-Fi, but it's ridiculously slow. They're using 802.11 G, and I imagine that combined with a very slow CPU made for really slow download performance. Don't transfer files to the device using the network folder mode unless you want to wait forever. The fastest I've ever managed to get something to transfer at was 300 to 500 KBps.APH also released a buggy software update to support NLS BARD, Bookshare, their own magazine service, and Open Library. The device constantly locked up or failed to download content, and they never fixed it. They also charged me $29 for this shit, which I'm still pissed off about. I will never purchase another APH product. What are the device specifications? Is it a single-core CPU running slower than 1 GHz? How much RAM and storage does it have?

Another long post ahead, I didn't intend it to be but my brain ran away.I'm not sure about my feelings on how much training one should receive from a sighted or blind instructor. Camlorn mentioned it in post 74.I grew up with mostly sighted instructors, who mostly felt that there was only one way to do things. As a result I still struggle to this day with feelings of "Am I doing this right?' And they're not distant echoes of my past either. My head says "If it works for you and those around you then what does it matter?" but my emotions say otherwise... I get skittish because I'm afraid I look like a klutz, I'm going to get scolded, I'm going to do something stupid because I didn't follow all the steps I was supposed to etc. If I could let go of that and say "I'm going to just try and see what happens," I would be fine. But it's one of those things that's easy to think, and hard to put into practice. It's like jumping into the deep end of a cold swimming pool. No matter how much you know it's going to be cold and unpleasant at least at first, the adrenaline rush still comes when I think about it, and I don't deal well with that. Now if someone pushed me into the pool and I didn't have much control over it, then the adrenaline rush would be focused more on survival and just getting through it, and not on the act of forcing myself to do something I don't know I can handle. Not trying to be overly soppy and dramatic, just trying to think of a way to explain the feelings.I was never at an NFB camp but I've heard stories. My girlfriend was at one of those, and they made her learn a route, then perform it without any external aid, without even a GPS, and she was only allowed to ask for help once. Being the rebel she is, she decided to use the GPS on her phone if she got lost (and she did). She could've gotten expelled for it, according to her, but she wasn't caught.I'm in two minds about it. On one hand I can sort of see why they didn't want her using the GPS or asking for help, since if you rely on doing that, then you'll never be ready to tackle a situation when none of those things are available. On the other hand, it does bother me that they seemed to be so adamant about it. As I said in my first post, I only started coming to terms with my blindness when I started trying to find ways to integrate with the sighted. So training a route for 6 weeks for the purpose of being able to do it without the GPS just doesn't sit well with me, because I don't think sighted people do that. And even if the primary goal was to teach blind people safe street travel, a GPs isn't going to get you exempt from that. It won't magically orient you or help you cross streets. Hell, when I used my first GPS, it confused me because it would tell me I was facing southeast on an east-west street because of how I/it was turned. At the time, I couldn't cope. So yeah, I don't quite get it, not unless I push my own beliefs aside. Then there was the time I was getting some instruction navigating my way around college. The instructor I had was as new as could be. She was sighted, and I was among her first clients. She had book smarts, and knew how to provide instruction. But she didn't know how to relate, or how to help when things went wrong, and things  often did go wrong with me. She was nice when we weren't doing mobility, but during mobility I was tense. At one point, when I just wasn't getting it after about half an hour, she became frustrated and exclaimed, "I could've done this in training with a blindfold, and you've been blind most of your life, so this should be no problem for you!"Needless to say I took some offense to this, but I honestly think she didn't mean it to come out that way. I think she was just... puzzled and frustrated. Not at me, but at everything. Like I say, she knew how to train by the book and that was about it. I don't even know if she's still working now.Funny enough, orientation stuff didn't really click with me until I started getting into FPS games like Shades of Doom, Technoshock, GMA Tank Commander etc. Stuff with maps that you have to figure out. Stuff where walking into walls doesn't hurt, or facing halfway between north and east will at worst get you a bit lost, but won't bring on the sinking feeling of being stranded without help. Trying to find my own way to navigate those maps got me more comfortable with orientation. I don't know how much better it made me at navigating in the real world, but I felt I could understand orientation better. To this day, I prefer to play those games walking forward i.e. face east, walk forward and sidestep once to pick up the gun, now turn south and walk forward to the door. Jayde, I never stated we shouldn't  have the skills to be independant etc.   My point was the same as yours. OIf I am alone and navigating, I use all tools available to me. However, when given a choice between freezing to death or dying from heatstroke etc, I will go and ask someone and do myself a favor if I am stuck.Interestingly, I was never formally trained for stuff like cooking etc. So I don't know any safe  ways of handling the knives etc, I use the regular ways sighted people use. The particularly fun ones are using an ax or machetti to chop wood, and using your hand as a guide, or hammering nails in. What probably helped though, I would help out with household chores from a really early age, and had  very little regard to my own safety, I remember as a child I would use large stones or hammers to smash nuts etc, or fuel and stir wood stoves.

Agreed with 12. Use PySDL2. (Note: I've had trouble using PySDL2 on Windows. In particular, I had to modify the source code to get it to find sdl2.dll... Its search path is kinda weird, though I don't remember it off the top of my head.)@11Its unlikely that Pygame/Piglet, if they do use SDL2 underneath, couldn't add force-feedback (or any other SDL2-based API that isn't obsoleted by something Python provides in its stdlib). Its more likely that they just don't want to. Assuming, mind, that both are powered by SDL2.

That being  said she has an amazing playstyle that lends itself very well to pro players and those who're heavy to psychological play.Really - the only char who's left on the field is Shao Khan, though I'll still gamble money with anyone I can beat you with Shao. Re: PC Microphone suggestions?

I would not recommend the Yeti Pro as an XLR mic, and I wouldn't suggest it as a USB mic if you're using it with a Windows machine.Let's start with problems using the Yeti Pro as an XLR mic. Firstly, you can't plug standard XLRs into the microphone unless you have a dual XLR breakout cable. This breakout cable allows you to connect two XLRs for stereo recording, presumably because Blue didn't want to add two XLR connecters to the back of the microphone. This wouldn't be such a horrible trade-off, but this adapter also becomes quite finnicky over time to the point where touching or moving it in any way causes snaps, crackles and pops. In addition, applying Phantom Power to both channels adds a noticeable hiss that does not appear when you use the mic with one channel. I'm guessing that applying Phantom Power to only one channel might solve this problem, but I can't control Phantom Power per channel; it's either on or off. This means that in my case, using the mic to make good stereo recordings is off the table.Using the Yeti Pro as a USB mic solved the XLR problems, but I also encountered problems when using the mic with Windows. If the Yeti Pro remained connected for several hours, it would suddenly disconnect. Sometimes, unplugging the mic and then plugging it back in solved the problem for 15 minutes or so, but eventually Windows would stop detecting the mic altogether, necessitating a reboot. Granted, this was several years ago, so things might have improved since then. I don't know, and I don't have the time or energy to check.All-in-all, if you want an XLR mic or a high quality USB mic, I'd suggest you look somewhere else. If you have to have a Yeti, go with the basic Yeti and don't bother with the Pro.

Re: Legend Of The Moon: A new Chinese Martial Arts RPG

That is a good point. The kinds of sounds I would personally use for trees and such wouldn't be particularly intrusive; think of the wind in the trees on an autumn day with a light breeze, something like that. Alternatively, a battle state could be enabled where all sounds but the relevant ones are faded into the background; I don't know if any games do this or if it is even possible. I'm probably just speculating wildly at this point. But the point about a crowded and cluttered soundscape is definitely something to consider.

The HP envy x360 is not a durable machine at all, plus HP are way too aggressive when it comes to thermals and power management to the point where they'll virtually starve the chip of power if it heats up beyond 70 degrees. You'd think a full metal build would equal durability, but I managed to bend the left side of the casing just by accidentally dropping and then catching the laptop again before it could hit the ground.Your friend would be far better served with the IdeaPad 5 14" or even the IdeaPad Slim if one can be found for cheap. They have the best cooling modules you'll find in a Ryzen U laptop and Lenovo don't baby the chips either.

Re: An Opportunity May Be Just Around The Corner...

Hi,I also agree with 2. I think even if you don’t want to give away any specific details of the game, just a few basic bits of general information  will probably generate you more interest in the project. Even just some basic general information such as which platform you want to develop the game for, which genre of game will it be, i.e. a Mud, an RPG, an MMO, first person shooter etc, or maybe it’s a game engine. I think with information like that it may potentially create more interest for you, but it may also help streamline the process for both you and the future developer by ensuring you end up speaking with people that are more likely to be relevant to your wants and end goal, with programmers you speak with then being more likely to be a better fit for your project, As some developers may prefer for example working on say mobile games, or others windows or Mac games, others may prefer working on engines   over games etc. I could of course be totally wrong, but that’s my 2 cents on the topic. Still will be interesting to see what comes of this in the long run as it sounds like you’ve been thinking about this for ages and the lack of information about the project makes me think you have a unique  idea, so wish you all the best with your project and hope you find a good fit  with the programmer you bring onto your team.Paul Lemm

True, when planning projects in larger scale you usually line out the scale and functionalities of a project before deciding about which stack you want to use when developing it. Then again, it would be necessary to know some skills your programmer needs. Should it be multiplayer or not, so would networking skills be a requirement? Cross-platform, maybe even mobile-only? Some people might not have the time to get at least intermediate knowledge in all of this, if necessary.

@80I mean, word of mouth is a powerful force.  This site is spread out, but there's enough blind people that if it went beyond this site you'd actually find people who'd want to do it.  Obviously at the moment posting only here, this is just kind of meh, but worth doing for the one person who happens to be close enough, which I'd be open to.But if I did actually do a site--well, it's much easier than you think to start an organization if we wanted an organization.  I don't have the bandwidth for it so this is hypothetical, but being a "organization" is one standard social media campaign firm, a few newspaper interviews, and a mission statement away.  In terms of legitimacy you legitimately don't beat "by the blind, for the blind" but that doesn't even matter: the people looking into this stuff can't tell anyway, because it's not like there's certifications that people actually pay attention to or anything.  Get a couple adwords campaigns going which I don't think anyone else is doing, then you're at the top of Google.  Could probably even raise funds for it pretty easily, to be honest.  Then you get a few genuine case studies about how working with a blind person who's really been there just helped so much with whatever and you're set, after that you just have to seek out newspapers or something to keep awareness up.I was in the position of sort of bullshitting a contracting business for programming, which was an unfortunate and very stressful place to be for a whole variety of reasons and not something I recommend anyone do unless you're not doing it to pay the bills.  But this isn't dissimilar in the sense that the organization would really only exist because the people won't be taken seriously without it, kind of like the frosting on the cake or something for a horrible metaphor.  And it's really easy to do that especially if you have the humanitarian angle and such.My point is, it's not unreasonable to pull this off if someone had the time to do it.

Ethin, if neither Nocturnus or nightshade know much by way of which programing language is better over another for their particular situation, such a decision may well be better left to those actually doing the programming, though of course this should be discussed with the team at large before any actual coding begins.

Re: Python: Usage for Joysticks and External Controllers?

SDL2's joystick support is wonderful. It needs a set of joystick button mappings to function, though. Such a mapping database is available here. To load it, use SDL_GameControllerAddMapping, SDL_GameControllerAddMappingsFromFile or SDL_GameControllerAddMappingsFromRW to load these. The game controller API is mapped on top of the joystick API. Once loaded, call SDL_NumJoysticks to check for joysticks/game controllers, then use SDL_GameControllerOpen to open one. Then you can use the other functions from either the Joystick and Game Controller APIs. For force feedback, use this API.

Re: How to compile C# scripts in Notepad ++? It's possible?

I really wouldn't do this kind of PATH manipulation if I were you to get the MSVC compilers working. I've found that doing so causes major problems (e.g.: I tried it with the C++ one and it broke the compiler). There is a command line environment that you can open expressly for this purpose. I strongly recommend just using that instead of trying to hack together your own solution.

I agree with 2. Though the programming language may seem like a detail left for later, its an absolutely crucial design decision that cannot be delayed. Your applicants for lead coder will need to be proficient in said language, but your applicant should (not) hold such a privilege. You and Nightshade are the project leads. Therefore, you, as project leads, must make critical decisions like that. If this is a contractual obligation I can understand the hesitation, however this does not appear to be such an arrangement.

The mention of sounds for doors, walls and npcs got me thinking, and this is a bit off topic. Why do so few of the Chinese titles have sounds for these objects. I can think of one or two games with NPC sounds, but none that I know of have either door or wall sounds. I could very well be wrong and won't take it amiss if I'm corrected on this point.  Back on topic: could there be a sound for trees, so you don't have to run into them to confirm that they're there? Like wind rustling leaves or something like that?

Re: RS Games Scrabble Released!

When I played Scrabble over a real board, I would use my hands to look at the board both after an opponent made a move, and occasionally during my turn. Roving the board is important, since later in the game when there are letters going every which way and words are everywhere, it's harder to keep track. Coordinates wouldn't help me at all in this regard, since I'd want to check the board for a good play no matter what my opponent played.

Well ok, apparently something strange happened when I installed the card for the first time. After uninstalling obs and setting up the card again, OCR works just fine. Don't know what the heck happened the first time. One more question regarding devices though. I want to record from the card, Microphone and the screen reader. If I got this right, I need to add another source to the scene, setting up an audio capture device because of the fact that I have to mute my desktop audio during the recording.Do I need an external soundcard and route the NVDA speach to that soundcard then? Or am I messing up things and I can do that with onboard methods?Greetings Moritz.

Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk

Interesting. The trek is kind of similar, the UI in this case actually being a GTK application, ditto the streams, hence how it was able to be ran under so many different configurations. I know the stream second gen runs linux colonel version 2.something underneath that, though I'm not entirely sure what exactly the trek runs, I haven't dived that far into it yet. Something related to android though, you can access fastboot by holding the volume keys at startup, as well as differing recovery menus who's contents I'm not sure about by holding either 1 of the volume keys separately. I was able to figure out, with some trial and error, that the trek does boot into which ever recovery menu is accessed with power and volume down before beginning the update installation process though, hence why it reboots at the beginning, this is something the stream 2 does not do, at least as far as I remember.

As the biggest MK nerd on the forum, I dare say so. I play nearly all aspects of it daily - the only thing you can't do is the crypt which is ashame because that's where you get most intros / outros and brutalities. For customizing characters and giving them special abilities (which is very important) you'll need OCR, either direct if you buy it on PC, or using your console's streaming capabilities to your pc and using OCR that way, but if you have a decent resolution this shouldn't be an issue.I'd be more than happy to teach you the ins and outs of the games if you'd like. If you buy it on PC I'll fight you!

Englishizing Steam?

Hi. I've been trying to install Steam for a couple days, but for some reason it won't install in English, even when the Radio Button Labeled English is checked. The anoying thing is that I installed it on another computer and it worked the first time. I didn nothing different. Any suggestions on how to get it set to English?

Re: is mk11 really worth buying?

Someone did an audio guide describing the menus and fatalities. There is a whole descriptive guide for everything that happens in story at gamefaqs. I think the only thing people should have trouble with at this point is the cript, but even that I heard at least one blind person managed to do. If you like modern mk and fighting games in general, I will say it's worth it, because there is a lot to do in game with the now 4 plus hour of story, character endings, towers and unlockables so it will last a while.

@358I mean how would the API look for that? Are you thinking of breaking all the commands apart yourself like a MUD? Or make command objects you could send over a socket, which would have predictable responses on the other end?

@9Please see https://rsgames.org/troubleshooting.php , as there's a link to the Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable you now need for the game to run correctly on Windows.Mac users need not apply.

Re: code 7

hy guys!I really liked the game so far, managed to do the muffin levels almost on my own, didn't understand how's that wind supposed to work and how to navigate around it though, so didn't complete the wind tutorials and for the last muffin puzzle up to where I am now, I took the code from...don't really remember. But aside from wind, use the shift+arrows to explore the layout of what muffin needs to navigate through, then imagine how would that be done in code, with the commands you have there in the programming app, it's not that hard.now, I have another problem.so, I'm in the helios station, but...I don't even remember what I have to do exactly, from that much trying, I think. So, I'm past that part with the personal info thingi, where you were shot if the system couldn't confirm your identity.now, I have to create a good enough disguise to be able to access, yeah, that was it, marko's workshop. I was able to access the first room, where I found some info or something, I forgot exactly what, but I don't worry because I know it's in the intelligence app somewhere.so, besides the fake employee, there's one person with the clearance sc1b. I think I found it, problem is I got the uniform wrong or something, it refuses to accept the desguise as valid.and, btw, the accessibility bug in editing and browsing disguises doesn't improve matters, so I think I'm scrued.do you guys think I should restart episode 3? if so, how do I do it? I really don't want to start the game again, so any other suggestions?

Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk

The device simply runs the software on top of the Windows CE environment. That means you can plug in a USB keyboard and go crazy. Of course you will not have a screen reader outside of that environment though. With enough ingenuity and time banging your head against it, you can modify anything you want up to and including replacing the software.

Its not the easier to buy, atleast here in Poland. You need to search a bit for a good reseller.

Re: PC Microphone suggestions?

The mute button on my yeti has been unreliable since the day I got the thing. I've also recently started having the same issue with the connector on the back ironcross pointed out, it's been known to cause audio warping and all kinds of other strange things. These days I find myself using the built-in microphone on my headset for things such as as team talk more and more, so I do really need to get a better solution for recording, particularly as regards podcasts.
