It wasn't accessible when I was doing my degree with the resources I had and was given I had also done my research the school refused to provide options to learn the matterial, so exemption was what the instructors offered, and what I accepted. The instructors of courses with a phonetics component had stated that being exempted from the symbols component would not put me at a disadvantage or allow me to gain less from the course, so that was the option I took. As for linguistics majors and graduate work, manually adding a bucketload of symbols is niether reasonable nor should it be expected. The issue is you suddenly have all symbols and diacritics as well as tonal tones for all possible languages. A blind person specializing in this is just asking for pain and unnecesary suffering. And again you accuse me of not doing enough. Know that I did all the research in my masters degree, and it is clearly evident that it can't reasonably be made accessible or learned to understand. As for syntax, brackets may be ok for simple syntax, but once you start getting extremely complex, they aren't viable. If yoiu have around 3 or more layers, it is just like math and you need a written medium that is not optional if you have any hope of understanding it. Going with Camlorn too, overclocking a mobile CPU almost never is a good idea, and a laptop with such a weak CPU doesn't seem to have the power to back the CPU up when overclocked. It sounds like your dad is guilt tripping you a lot with the whole "I do this because I love you" thing. I'd definitely look for hobbies and things you like: reading, writing, arithmetic... programming, proofreading, technical writing, writing documentation, event planning, um well now I'm getting into job titles but yeah, try stuff out. Try writing a Fanfiction. I did, and I mean I could, but managing so many plot points along with not having a clear idea of the whole story really broke things. And then I tried programming, and I think I'm finally passed the mental block stage and able to understand a lot more. But with everything, it takes a lot of practice and dedication. Find something you want to make. A game, a calming sound scape that changes based on what window you're in (Now that does sound nice) or what I did, getting the lunch menu from a Moodle page and extracting the menu for today. There's so much you can make with code, and while I may never be a professional programmer, I at least can make scripts that can help me out. So yeah maybe try that. And there's always reading, there are plenty of books out there, in just about any genre. There are MUDs/MOOs that I'll never reveal my visual impairment on because blindies came, blindies blindied, made a complete tit of themselves, pissed off staff that were attempting to accommodate them and basically made blind players a complete fucking cringe factor for the rest of the playerbase. Once a group of players or a MUD/MOO get's that reputation, it will rarely get the chance to shed it. Take a look /r/MUD where to this day Cosmic Rage is still considered to be a typo ridden mess.Then there are the blindie heartlands of Alter Aeon, where it's wall to wall roflroflrofl spam and everyone is weird AF. It's 545 words :yikes:I started my journey from Grand Theft Auto when I was a kid. 7 or 8. I saw my neighbors playing a game in which I heard the car sounds, I was interested in car sounds, so I asked them to play, and they allow me as well. Then, I went for Need For Speed, then for Taken 2, and 3.This is how my audio games journey started Me and a friend of mine were having a lot of fun, that was in 2016. We were talking a lot one day, then from nowhere he asked me that do you play audio games? I asked what are they, how are they different from anything else, then he told me, they have only audio, no graphics. Then I got one from him, that was A Blind Legend, my first audio game ever. I was liking sooo much, that even in the midst of my classes, I couldn't control myself:). I remember its story, and can't forget for long.Next one was Kitchen Sink, I used to play that pizza delivery thing, and Trucker. I don't remember others of them.Then, I played Top Speed 3 for sometime. Wish they created things like, bumping in people, throwing them by car and etc.Then he gave me Manamon. That was interesting as well. For one year, I just played demo and demo and nothing else. So after a long time of waiting, somebody gave me some kind of tool, and I registered. I did not knew much about game cracks, but I did that anyway. After completing some of the part, then I realized oh shit that is a crack. I finally got one key, and completed it 3 4 times. Though I spoiled it by watching playthroughs Next VGStorm RPG was Paladin of the Sky. So long maps, an interesting style, I also liked that dragon scroll concept.Next was an interesting complicated simulator Eurufly. It took a while for me to learn how to take off and land and etc. Guess they did a lot of work on atlas and navigation & well, the entire game.Next was A Hero's Call. That was fun too, I liked the navigation system, and the story line.After that, it was Shadow Rine. I liked that concept of Rudallfia, Lake, Volcano, and Forest, I also liked the battling style.Manamon2. When it was released, I registered on the forum. Though I was not a frequent poster, but I post 1 or 2 messages here everyday. When I started playing it, that story was a lot better than the previous version.The Killer: naa, deleted in one day after realizing what's happening with it.Breed Memorial: I was checking the New Releases Room, and I got to know about a breed simulation game. It is my first game which is different from others.RSGames: Pretty interesting games like Farcle, Uno, Ship Battle, 1000 Miles. It doesn't let you use your soundcard on your computer to hear your phone's audio though. Maybe bluetooth speaker app in windows store, but I've never been able to get those working with my external bluetooth receiver. Unless dad is shutting you down hard, it should be possible for you to get some basic skills going on. If you're able to say "when dad isn't around, I can't handle food", you're not ready to just jump across the country and hope.Benefits plus a roommate can get you as far as being out though, no employment required. But the roommate isn't optional and if you're a burden you won't keep one for long. Now's a good time to try that however, because if you can get onto benefits then that puts you in the position of being in the half of the world with a stable income and "I can pay half the rent if you handle cooking" will go over particularly well at the moment.If I were you, I'd get on benefits and handle the moving, then handle the employment. In the U.S. that means SSI and Section 8 housing. If you're not going to be doing something like programming, it is much easier to move first and then work out the job, especially since presumably you're going to be dealing with getting independent living skills via trial by fire. Also college isn't off the table. I believe even the U.S. does some sort of exception for scholarship money when determining your wages for benefit purposes, but it's been a while and I don't remember how that works. SSI plus a scholarship to some community college somewhere might give you the resources to coast for a while and the social contact needed to make friends.The key thing is that when it comes to vocational rehab stuff and all the general blindness services, they're considering eligibility based on where you live. So if you don't live there yet you can't get ahead of it. Your best bet is get a foot in the door then pry it open, if that makes sense. "I will get a job then move across the country" is a huge ask, but "I will move across the country and be miserable but less miserable than I am now, then work on getting a job" is a much more reasonable one.I've seen the family doesn't know what to do so they just do everything thing before. It's sad. When you're at the point of having a contingency plan, it might be time to try expressing these feelings. Assuming you haven't already, of course, because I know that like half of humanity will just label it childish immaturity. But he doesn't know how to help me, and he doesn't even know how to help himself. Not only can he not manage 1 house, but he just bought another one. Originally I wanted to just go to community college in my city and not worry about employment. Not a bad decision. I would be doing something wise with my time. Yes mental health would still suck, but I wouldn't have to worry about anything. And I could ask my state counselor for living skills. But with the pandemic and other things, I ditched this plan.I had decided I had had enough with my dad not knowing how to help, and not being able to help because he can't take care of his own shit.Yes dad you can feed me at any time and take me to a place at any time. That's great, I appreciate that. But when you aren't here which is often, I don't have anything to eat, or if we do, I can't make it.Another problem with him though, is he is hypocritical and double standard as fuck. Like we're talking, one day he says something, then the next he says something completely different. If I try to be independent, I never know if he will support it or guilt trip me by saying I stay at home and do nothing and I don't spend time with him. Problem is, he is gone most of the time, so I kind of can't spend time. And if I ask to spend time, which isn't often because I suck at that, he delays it and by that day it doesn't happen. Sometimes he says it isn't my fault that I can't spend time with hi, and other times he scolds me for it, or at least it feels that way.But the thing that bothers me the absolute most is when he constantly says, I do things because I love you. That statement in itself isn't bad. it's true. He loves me a lot. But because of me not being able to drive or not knowing how to cook, I don't have an option but for him to do it for me. Unless I take ride share or go out to eat somewhere. Without going on a side tangent, I am able to without problem, but he will try to say that I don't trust him if I don't tell him where I went.Back to the I do things because I love you thing. It makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. It's one thing to love your kid and be there for them. But it's another to provide for a blind kid who has no hope and no desire and no direction, and pass that off as love every 3 tasks or so. He doesn't knwo the difference between love and support is. The really confusing thing is, he knows what support is, but he still tries to pass it off as love. And I'm forced to say I love you back, like 30 times a day.I'm fortunate to have a dad that will do things for me if I need it, but I'm fucked not having a dad that actually helps me. Doing things for me, isn't help. Again he doesn't know what help is.So after ditching my good and safe plan, I decided to byte off more than I can chew, and that's where I'm at. Moving half way across the country, trying to arrive with employment already in place. I realize this is pretty extreme. But it's better than sitting at home wanting to kill myself. There, you will see it.However, in Windows 10, the voice will be reset to David every so often for some reason, and there's nothing you can do about it. That happens when you select a voice from the 32 bit control panel, and the only way to make it easier is to have a shortcut to the 32 bit sapi control panel so you can quickly change this back. I had had this idea that games belonged on games systems, and computers and the internet were intended for school/university work only. I had enough vision to play at least some of the 16 bit era games back on consoles like the snes when I was growing up, but at this point it was 2003, all the games were complex and 3d and it seemed there was nothing else. Then I ran across an announcement in a braille magazine which mentioned whitestick.co.uk, and the games to play online page. I looked at some of the offline games, but the idea of an audiogame was one I found just weird, and several I heard descriptions of like beautiful ears just didn't sound anything like the console games I was used to, or indeed the fps and rpg games I so much desired to play. So, for a couple of years I stuck to playing games like sryth, ashes of angels and legend of the green dragon, which were great as far as they went, (as well as teaching me how to use the internet with Supernova), but didn't go all that far.Then in 2005, Bryan P on the Sryth forums recommended me shades of doom, which was not only an fps, sounded much like the types of horror fps I'd wanted to try. I'd never installed a program before, but I installed shades of doom, and likewise bought the game. ~That was a real revelation for me, the game was adictive, atmospheric, and everything I'd wanted. So I decided to investigate what other audiogames were available, which lead me to this site, indeed you can still see my first ever intro post in the old introductions topic.Since a quirk of time tabling also meant that was a time when I had literally nothing else to do, was waiting between the end of my masters and start of my PHd I spent literally all of 2006, trying out all the games I could get my hands on, everything from now defunct none entities like the buggy as hell space colony cleaner, to classics like the bavisoft games, Vipgameszone and esp pinball, which obviously gave me a good background in games. Sander and Richard asked me to start writing news in 2007, and in 2008, when I proposed cleaning up the db (which at that point was about three years out of date), they gave me permission to do so, and the rest as they say, is history. That includes the directory, name of the song, and selected file number, etc. There are ways to imbbed text input handling into the window itself, but at that point it might be easier to pull in wxpython for more accessible GUI handling. I'm not sure if that one can because it sounds like it's mobile and a lot of the mobile ones are blocked. But on the computer it sounds like you have, overclocking the CPU won't help because you'd also have to have better ram, hard drive, and so on. Most applications aren't CPU bound, they're I/O bound, and the real problem is probably a small CPU cache and/or slow everything else, which overclocking isn't likely to do much for. And if it can be, you'll only get 20% at most, probably less, and (again) only for the CPU.I'm 99% sure the only fix is replacing the machine. A month is really damn fast even for the sighted guy who wants to get a job at Mcdonalds right now given the pandemic, but also even somewhat fast in normal times without one. Any high-paying career for a sighted person will take years. I kind of think maybe your problem isn't blindness so much as it is that you're near or at the end of high school and getting slapped in the face by adult life which, again, happens to most sighted people too.Untie your self-worth from a job though. Tying your self-worth to a job doesn't work for sighted people and certainly doesn't work for us. Yeah it's something to be proud of. Absolutely be proud of it when it happens (yes, when: if you try for long enough you'll manage something). But as soon as you tie your self-worth to a career you probably just failed at life. It's a great way to get sucked into this sort of not happy or sad life where you're just always neutral, wake up and go to work at 9, cook dinner at 5:30, go to bed, do it again the next day for 30 or 50 or 70 years or however long without ever having strong or memorable experiences.Suicidal thoughts are never fun. I've been there and I will be there again because bipolar II is just like that sometimes. But at the same time I'm pretty sure that you just need to find some perspective. You can't perspective suicidal feelings away, but you sure can figure out whether or not you feel that way for real reasons or because you're brain is just like "I know, how about I fuck with you today", you're not in that bad of a situation, and if you can make that separation then one way of dealing with them is learning to sort of put them in the same box as "it's raining and that sucks". I am thankfully done with college now, so this is irrelevent, but I didn't have a brother available to me to help with this, and I did extensive research so your argument you never tried doesn't fly. I actually have commented on issues, as well as made my own on the NVDA github. Lets say I somehow got someone to label those symbols, I wouldn't be able to produce these, and remember I would have to learn what each symbol stood for. And I used a reader for the exam, so transcribing paragraphs to a reader would be a significant task. And the appropriate way to learn IPA is through braile, not a screen reader, or relabeled symbols. This is actually one of the few instances when braille is incredibly helpful and useful. Try teaching a sighted person phonetics with no visual cues and see how well they do. And relabeling is a massive task make no mistake. The international phonetic association has a document over 30 pages with all the symbols, many hundreds. From your writing, it is obvious you didn't do graduate study. In graduate study, the focus exclusively is on research, not exams. So all of the symbols are required. You don't just use specific ones. OCR again is very rellevent because when reading articles, especially digitized ones, you absolutely have to OCR. And I didn't have everything handed to me on a plate iether in the UK. The disability agency found a braille copy of phonetic symbols, but that isn't very helpful without knowing what phonemes those sounds stand for, and still leaves the article problem. So I am not saying a blind person should be exempt, it isn't a desirable outcome. But if the technology or resources aren't there, it should be the option. I am not saying a blind person shouldn' specialize in phonetics, but because of the IPA issues, especially with research, I think it would be better for a blind person to specialize in something like semantics or pragmatics which doesn't have these problems. Unless that said blind person enjoys working 24/7 or 10x as hard for the same outcome, or constantly needing assistants with articles. The journal is some horrible ARIA table where they didn't properly use attributes, so columns and rows were misreported. Every time I log in to do something, some stupid notification popped up to upsell me on some QBO feature or other.Essentially, when tax time came around, I threw money at my accountant to add rules for my various transactions, so at the end of the year I could spit out CSV and do my taxes. I hate it so much that I pretty much put off logging into it every time I get an email prompting me to take action. It's not so terrible if you, say, click the automated email links to run payroll or electronically file taxes. But go beyond that and you've basically got sighted folks' annoyances times 8, because it's hard enough to use QBO when it's accessible. I only use it because my accountant requires it, and given that I'm spinning down this LLC in a month or two, I'll be ditching it ASAP.Good luck. Was the desktop version any more accessible? In the beginning of middle school I was invited to attend the school for the blind in washington but my mother was too over protective and I wasn't allowed to go.because of the constent bullying i received in middle school I became more introverted, not speaking to anyone or going out of the house with the exception of schoolin the summer of 2017 i was introduced to teamtalk. I was on the publick servers, i made some friends and some enemies. I tried to be like the stereotypical tt blindy, spamming, streaming loud music and just being an all around dick to everyone.In 2019 i realized that A. i'm not going to get anywhere if i stay hanging out with the toxic communities so I left. After that my socialization skills slowly started to improve and while they are still not the best they are definitly better than in 2019.Moral of the story. But they do exist.Also there was that day I asked my mom if she'd have put me through conversion therapy if I'd come out as gay in high school and the best she could give me was that we're not there now so why am I asking? You should put this in perspective. in terms of being judged--well, mostly people aren't disowned for being blind, but I know lots and lots of gay people who flat out don't talk to anyone in their family anymore. A friend of mine became a sort of home in 2008 or so during the housing crisis for a bunch of gay men who lost their homes, because they couldn't go home to their families who'd already kicked them out in the past because of it.Whatever hole you're in, you're going to stay there until you stop making blindness the center of your existence and wearing it like chains or something. There are much, much worse things. Knowing that can be a good coping mechanism for a few years until you become immune to it, but even if it's not there's no reason you can't eventually live on your own with a job or an apartment or whatever, have a few sighted friends, some hobbies, etc. You're blind. It sucks. You can't do the things you could before. But stop dwelling on it. Your problem doesn't seem to be that blindness is hard. Your problem seems to be that you sit in a room and just think about it all the time. Explore the wonderful world of books, or the wonderful world of music, or the wonderful world of various crafts. Program all day long. There's *tons* of things that you *can* do, so focus on those instead. I can't respect myself because I'm blind, and I can't advocate for the blind because very few people give a shit. Plus that would be like strengthening my own enemy in a way, supporting blindness when I hate being blind. So screw it. I'd rather die happy knowing I made this choice than chase down extremely unequal opportunities just to get lucky, or just to end up looking worse for wear than when I started and I have less to be happy about.
