Class balance seems kind of screwed up to me. You'd think Jedi or Sith would be some of the strongest, but that's mostly non-Force wielding types like the bounty hunter or mercenary subclasses. It's probably because Jedi are meant to be defenders and not offensive. Sith can do twice the damage because of fury, but they're fragile otherwise. Jedi actually got a rework recently, but their damage output is still meh compared to other classes I've seen.Most of the best equipment is random, and most of that is created by the inventor subclass of the technician class. There are also powerful mobs called legend mobs that can drop some decent equipment, but they're heavily flagged for use by certain classes. The best of those are on mobs that need a group to take out unless you're insanely powerful. You can build your own custom weapons and armor, but they're not as good as some of the random drops/invents.

If this isn't the case, make sure you set up the profile for that MUD before putting in the pack. Typically the pack has a set file for that MUD that loads everything else, but if you put it in before adding the profile it'll be overwritten.

SC is a pretty well-designed game. The hosts just don't have very good people skills. That's the polite way of putting it. Miriani's hosts are a lot more friendly.Yes, the soundpack thing on SC is silly. hey let's make this text super wordy, then complain when people shorten it with a trigger so they can have a better chance of reacting, then penalize them for scripting when they're entering commands by hand. No thanks.One good thing about SC versus miriani is that SC requires that you have a valid reason for PVP. You can't just go attacking other players when you feel like it because you're bored. On Miriani you can attack anyone for any reason or no reason at all really, so long as that reason is in character. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what sort of character you want to play and how well you can fight.

So, let's first try to put this to rest right now before things get out of hand.In the end, what client you use is going to depend on your needs. Just use what works for you. If you want to write complex scripts, need the scripting support that MUSHclient has, and don't mind screwing around with a ton of XML junk, then use MUSHclient. If you don't mind shelling out 30 USD for a basic client that provides limited scripting support and it meets your needs, then buy and use VipMud. Both clients have their strengths and weaknesses, and those are going to depend on the people using them. Personally, I don't need a ton of scripting support, don't want to deal with a ton of complicated XML junk, and I prefer the simple interface of VipMud. So, I use VipMud.What I would encourage people to do if they're not sure what client they need is try both and see what they like best. MUSHclient is free, and VipMud has a 30 day full demo. This is an idea dump I was working on a few weeks ago.Here are some ideas that may or may not make things a bit more fun. Apologies if any of these were suggested already.Reduce button mashing when gathering things.I don't know about anyone else, but having to constantly press space over, and over, and over again to gather things gets really tedious and, well, repetitive. My suggestion is to have an option that would let you press space once to start gathering. To balance this, you would need both hands empty. While gathering, you couldn't walk, look at your inventory, defend yourself, etc. You could probably still talk on out of character and radio, but that would be about it. To stop, you would just hit space again. Gathering this way could only be done at a certain energy level. If you fell below that level, you'd stop and need to rest. It also wouldn't be any faster than it is now. It just wouldn't require you to try to kill your poor space bar. Note this would only work when gathering things like wood, branches, etc.No more items all over the ground on death.Right now when someone dies, their stuff just spills out all over the ground. Not only is this annoying when you want to retrieve things, it's not very realistic. If a pack is closed, it's not going to just burst open and spill everything on the ground when someone dies unless something damages it. I suggest that when someone dies, a pack object is created with all of their items inside. To get everything out, you would need to combine it with an empty hand. Once empty, the pack would disappear.Parachutes!Not sure if these could be crafted. Maybe they could come from gifts and or STW point purchases. Basically, these would let you survive a long fall. You would have to wear them, and then combine them with an empty hand to use when falling. You may or may not take some damage and break a bone, but you'd be alive! It'd also just be fun to jump down the mountain.Healing sleep.Sleeping helps you regain energy faster, but it doesn't seem to help you heal faster. This would make sense. It shouldn't be as fast as a healing drug mind you, but it should help a little. Sleeping should also help bones heal too.Food and water do what again?Food and water also don't seem to help with regaining energy or health. Being well fed and hydrated should maybe do so.Being out in the wild toughens you up.I believe health and energy boosts are temporary. While that's good for keeping people buying them, it's weird that no one seems to get stronger. All that surviving should probably make you stronger in the form of permanent health/energy boosts up to a point. That is unless I'm mistaken and boosts are permanent maximum energy/health levels.

Ah. So this is why I lost a ton of items after death for no obvious reason. I thought this was a bug. my thinking is if you can get back to your stuff before someone takes it, you should get everything back. This is ultimately why I stopped playing, especially when that area near the pythons lags you to hell and you can't do anything when one attacks you. Ah well. I'll consider playing again if this silliness is removed.

You can get away with flying back and forth in easies and even moderates, but learn patterns if at all possible as you go. Some people know the system so well that they don't need a pattern and just fly random.  The reason why flying back and forth isn't the best idea is because the Praelor can lock on to where you were and fire, and if you happen to move back there, you'll get hit.

having multiple antivirus programs on the same system is generally a bad idea in the first place, and I'm not aware if you can have a different antivirus load for different users or not.that said, I use NOD32 antivirus, and it doesn't flag BGT games as malware. I occasionally run Malwarebytes just in case, but it doesn't automatically delete things. Strangely, it thinks Survive The Wild and Table Flipper are anomalous, but not Crazy Party.

A similar concept is losing equipment when you die or hit a death trap of some sort, both of which Revenge of the Jedi has. I suppose if it's a primarily roleplaying game it would make sense to lose equipment on death, but sometimes it's beyond ridiculous. Alter Aeon used to have this as well. I wasn't around for that though.

From what I understand about all the clones, and someone can correct me if I'm mistaken, the problem was mostly people sharing source code with the wrong individuals. I've heard something about BGT being easy to decompile, but I know nothing about that sort of thing. It doesn't matter what language you use. If you share your code with the wrong people and they know how to make use of it, they will. If Sam and the people he shared code with all knew how to code in Python for example, I'm almost 100% certain that we'd still have the cloning problems. It's not the fault of the language. Any language can be decompiled if someone is bored or determined enough.Ironcross said in post 3 that part of the problem was how easy it was for someone to grab BGT and work with it. This may be true; however ease of use was the whole point of BGT. It allowed a potential developer to focus on the creation of audiogames instead of learning an entire mainstream programming language and possibly getting discouraged along the way due to how much work has to be done.While I do agree that a serious developer should probably strive to learn a mainstream language once they've grasped the basics of programming, I don't agree with attempting to force people to do so. Not everyone has the time or desire to learn a language like Python just so they can create an audiogame or 3, and if they want to stick to something like BGT, that's really their business alone. If they want to make more complex games, they'll have to learn something new.Just wanted to put that out there.

The original Zedd voice also had some sort of effect on it too, but not all the time for some reason. It was that wacky double voice with one voice pitchd lower effect, which I'm still not sure how to do properly. Lol.As for different characters fighting exactly the same, I can't imagine that happening. Each ranger had his or her own fighting style for the most part.

As far as Alter Aeon's fly spell goes, here's the help file.The 'fly' spell allows you to float above the ground. My guess is that JAWS falls behind in some areas due to how it's coded, and now FS is having to either change how things are done or find a way to cary on with how they've been doing things from the start. They've already had to change quite a bit of things regarding Edge because they can't just hook into the browser anymore. As for NVDA, I don't know Python, so I don't know how that works either.

things aren't as hostile as they once were these days. People can still be somewhat irritating, but stranding and ship destruction/theft are kind of rare right now. Ground combat got some nice changes quite recently in that you're no longer able to be stunned in certain locations and there are now group options to allow/disallow people from grabbing or joining you. If they're not on one of your allowed lists, you have to be stunned or idle for them to do so.

Gaming disorder.

Apparently, the World Health Organization will recognize gaming disorder or video game addiction as a mental health condition starting in 2018. It's probably something we should all be aware of, as it seems to be a growing issue across the globe.What is gaming disorder? From what I've been reading on the subject, gaming disorder is when someone is addicted to games to such an extent that they do nothing else. They can't stop gaming, and their lives and health suffer as a result. All that matters to them is getting that next level, building up their virtual cities, etc. This isn't limited to console games. It can be computer games, MUDs, even audiogames.So what are everyone's thoughts on this? If you need more information, simply Googling gaming disorder will bring up various news articles.

Magic in alter Aeon.

Back when I started playing Alter Aeon in 2002 or so, I started to wonder how the magic worked. How exactly does mana get consumed and allow a mage to throw balls of fire or bolts of lightning around? More importantly, assuming the magical energy is coming in contact with the caster's hands for things like lightning bolts and fireballs, how is the caster not harmed by his or her own magic? It's a game, so who really cares? I guess I do, because I like things to make some sort of sense.Enter Dentin's Alter Aeon Game Physics Page, which explains a few things about the physics of the game. Included is some talk about the raw elemental planes, which are where the elemental energies for fire/ice/lightning/crystal come from. According to the page, mana is used to pull energy from those planes, and the caster is able to form balls of fire, shards of crystal, spikes or walls of ice, etc.But how is this accomplished? The page says nothing about how magic is actually done beyond pulling of raw elemental energy from the planes. I believe I asked Dentin some time ago if the caster is somehow pulling the energies into his or her own body an then releasing them, and he said it worked something like that. This still begs the question of how the caster isn't harmed by his or her own magic, because I imagine drawing even a small amount of raw elemental energy into one's own body without some sort of protection would be pretty dangerous.So, I have some theories I'd like to put out there and see what everyone thinks. Dentin and the other admins are of course invited to confirm/deny/clarify any of these if they wish to.First, what exactly is mana? Mana is used to cat spells. As ar as game mechanics go, it's used to limit how much energy a caster has at his or her disposal for casting spells. Each spell takes a certain amount of mana to cast. As far as game physics goes, I think mana is some sort of energy that responds to thoughts and has a limited ability to interact with physicalmatter and raw elemental energy. Maybe it's like the Force in Star Wars. It's everywhere, including the raw elemental planes. Everyone has a bit of a personal supply, but ultimately it's everywhere and in everything. Perhaps it's some sort of particle type phenomenon like the Seithr in BlazBlue. Maybe the Prime Material and elemental planes are separated by an ocean of mana. We don't really need to define it too much since this is a fictional world we're talking about, but it helps.How is mana used? My theory is that when used for elemental spells, the caster, with the ability to direct mana with his or her thoughts, creates a link to one of the elemental planes with a tendril or tube of personal mana. How much elemental energy needed for a spell is going to affect how much mana is needed to contain it. Once the link is formed, the caster uses it to gather the raw elemental energy from the plane and into his or her body. The mana acts as a barrier or insulation so that the elemental energy never actually makes contact with the caster's body. I'm guessing that Mana also has the ability to shape the energy, so the caster most likely uses his or her thoughts to shape the mana, which in turn molds the elemental energy into the desired shape, such as a fireball. That's why fire is so easy to control. It can be molded easily. The other idea is that the elemental energy is what's being molded directly by the caster's thoughts, and the mana is just a container whatever the shape is. I haven't quite thought about how it works for lightning, but elemental ice energy probably interacts with water vapor in the surrounding air to make shards, walls, spikes, etc. Cone of cold and ice shield are just pure elemental cold. The page says the liquid crystal of the elemental plane of crystal actually phase changes into whatever solid form the caster needs.When the spell is ready to be released, the caster mentally hurls the mana, elemental energy at all, at the target. Just before the spell reaches the target, the caster allows the mana to dissipate into the environment, allowing the unshielded spell to impact the target.What about things like the force field spells such as fly and Tensors' floating disc? These things are likely just pure mana. Remember I did say that I think mana can interact with both physical matter as well as elemental energy, so a mana force field shouldn't be too out there. As for the necromancer, druid, and cleric spells... I'm not entirely certain. Maybe those operate differently, as they're not drawing from the elemental planes.This should make for some interesting discussion.

The spam thing is just silly, in my opinion. Hahahaha every so often is not that long. Now if you get a string of 10 or more ha's or if it's being done repeatedly, then that could probably be considered spam. It used to bug the living crap out of me when people would just spit out a string of ascii characters. Probably because I didn't have the ability to just gag it back then. There was ignore, but ignoring someone entirely for that seems overkill, depending on the circumstances. If someones' personally annoyed by a single hahahaha every so often, then they should just gag it on their side if possible instead of being ban happy. The fact that a filter exists to catch something so harmless is just... silly as I said. There was some talk on bovine about making that an end user filter from what I saw on the channel's page, and I support that.

@keyIsFull, Yes. I'm aware of the stat swap option. If I did that though, it would require me to dump practices into a stat just to get it back to where I had it before. I'm also aware that Dentin gradually raised the charisma requirement on cleric spells, so it wasn't like things were just switched over right away. It doesn't make it any less annoying to me personally though. I really don't want to spend hours grinding a stat just to be able to play a character I've had since 2002 effectively again. Buying practices with credits is also an option, but then I'm paying to be able to play that character effectively again. Right now I really don't want to spend hours grinding practices, and as much as i'd love to donate to help the game stay up, I don't want to spend a ton of money on credits just to raise a stat in order to play effectively either. It's nothing against Dentin or the game. I just don't want to deal with it. Maybe someday.

Alter Aeon was my very first MUD, and my favorite for many years. Due to my interest in Miriani, I stopped coming around as often as I once did. Due to recent changes, however, I don't come around anymore. I do keep an eye on changes and board eight through the RSS feed though, because I do still care about the game.The first thing I can think of that threw me off was the changes to cleric. My character was built as a mage/cleric, so my primary stats were intelligence and wisdom. This was back when charisma wasn't worth much except for very specific circumstances and cleric used intelligence instead of charisma, so I never got around to maxing charisma. So, in order to be an effective cleric again, I would need to run practices to raise charisma. Not something I want to do, thanks. Why should I have to work extra hard to reobtain something I already had?Another thing that threw me off was the alignment changes. Anti-evil and anti-good flagged equipment now consume your alignment. My primary set of equipment has quite a bit of anti-evil equipment, which I suspect would make it that much harder to keep my good alignment without grinding the holy heck out of evil mobs.Finally, this level change. I don't really understand Dentin's decision to make it near impossible to obtain max level. All it seems to be doing is driving older people off. I can't say what new people who don't know any better think. It sure doesn't make me want to come back, especially if I have to level convert, which is sort of sad.What we all need to remember is that it's Dentin's game. He can do whatever he wants with it, and the players don't have any intrinsic right to be there. We can either stay around and deal with the changes, or we can leave. I don't think any amount of protesting is going to help in this case. Dentin seems to have his mind set on what he's doing, and he's only going to change his mind if things don't turn out the way he wants. I say just let him do what he's going to do and let the data he collects speak for itself.

The main reason why  I haven't played is... well it doesn't seem to work with JAWS anymore, lol. I really don't want to have to switch screen readers every time.Also it seems to lag out horribly on my machine now. Not server lag, it makes my whole machine lag.The main menu music is also holy cow loud, making it difficult to hear speech.Hopefully those new changes make gameplay better. Good luck!

I wouldn't put them all in one deck. You're limited to having 60 cards in your deck during a battle, so some may or may not be chosen. You may even end up with several hands full of cards that you can't use right away because your level in that type is too low. Building a deck requires a bit of strategy.

When changing your directory, I'd make sure that your triggers aren't using absolute paths as well. That would make changing things a lot easier. A simple find and replace in Notepad will do the trick there. IN VIPMud 2.0, Sound triggers should be using the %SoundsFolder variable, and all sounds should be in a folder for that MUD in the sounds folder.I still wonder about that missing file this thread was about originally though.

Steve,Any RPG, MUD, etc, is going to have admins that are capable of doing things that normal players cannot. If you disagree with what STW admins can do, you'd hate what a wizard can do on a MOO or any similar platform that allows them to move or change anything in the database. You said this is why you stay away from MUDs though, so I assume you know this already.There's a good reason for admins to have these abilities in any game, and that's simply the need for the hunan factor to be present in some situations. For example, code probably can't always know how to deal with moving a player out of an unknown area to the correct location. For now, admins need to take care of that. Sam hasn't coded a way for disasters to spawn on their own, so admins need to handle that as well. If a player loses items due to a bug, then an admin can replace those items. I could go on.there's just one thing that bothers me though. Admin characters a
 re allowed to play the game just like normal player characters. This doesn't sit right with me. Just because rules are in place to prevent admins from cheating doesn't mean someone would never try to find a way to get away with it. It's my opinion that admin characters should be for helping to administrate the game and nothing else. If the person behind said admin character wants to play the game, they should be required to do so on a normal player character. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but the temptation to abuse admin abilities when playing on an admin character is there, and anyone who says otherwise is probably lying.

I think that also depends on how many triggers you have loaded at a given time as well as what file format your sounds are. I had pretty poor results if I was playing sounds in MP3. Sounds in .WAV seem to get handled better. The more triggers you have loaded, the more the client has to process incoming text. That's one reason why classes are useful.

Honestly, I'd suggest trying out both clients to see what works for you and what doesn't. I get really peeved when people say a piece of software sucks and the software they used is the best. It may be the best for their needs, but someone else might have different needs/wants that their software of choice addresses. I hate having to use the JAWS cursor, someone else may think it's just fine. Doesnt' make us right or wrong, just means we have different views on accessibility.

I prefer VIPMud myself, mostly due to its interface. Having to use the JAWS cursor to review text annoys me to no end. My first client was GMUD, followed by MonkeyTerm. Both clients required me to use the JAWS cursor to review text. It's just personal preference. VIPMud works out of the box, doesn't require the user to dink around with a ton of extra plugins to get accessibility, and has a clean, simple interface.As for the price, you pay for convenience I suppose. I bought it to support the developer because I like the product.

Chrono Phantasma had some story elements that explained what went on in the past, but the main story pretty much focused on a single timeline unlike the previous two. Speaking of confusing though, To this day, I still don't quite get what Nu meant in the original CT story about having a body this time. Just... what? How did she meet/fight Ragna without a body last time?Anyhow, hopefully an English dub will be in an extend version or a patch or something. I know of the story through playthroughs, so hopefully someone somewhere will do one for this one once an English dub is done.

Pretty sweet. Looks like they continued to use the new character themes from Chronophantasma. While I can't understand the Japanese, I can tell who Ragna's fighting depending on the music.Also, I think Taokaka sounds a lot more crazy with the Japanese voice. Just holy crap. She sounds more like some weird bird thing instead of a cat.

Azrael's story was confusing to me. In terms of plot, he just seemd to pop up out of nowhere, and it seemed like the player was supposed to know who he was. They went into a lot of detail about how Ragna and the Black Beast were related to one another, but it felt like Azrael was just thrown in as a plot device.

I thought it connected to the server to see if you have it registered, not if you have the latest version. I don't know for sure though. I haven't gotten that SocketWrench error since the latest build of 2.0 came out.

Noel's English voice actor actually made an unofficial shortened version of Love so Blue (Noel's theme with vocals), and expressed her hope of companies supporting English dubs of video game soundtracks like BlazBlue. Things will probably make a bit more sense if you know what happened in the previous games. Otherwise you're going to be wondering what's going on and how everyone got to where they are. I think the only other one you'll really need is Continuum Shift Extend as it has a reconstructed version of Calamity Trigger's story along with its own. The reconstructed version makes a bit more sense than the original, but it's still kind of weird.
