Re: NVDA Intercepting Numpad Issue

It's funny you bring this up actually, I remember last year running into a similar problem. I bought a wireless keyboard, only to discover that it had no dedicated home and end keys outside the numpad. That's about the time I ran into the issue that you're having... kinda. Sadly I was never able to find a work around.

Re: Chicken Nugget is Back!

@Munawar:I literally said this to someone earlier who was asking whether people thought it was worth the purchase. I actually like some of the features in nugget, videos and to a lesser extent audio are a huge one for me. I'm on the 30 day trial but remain pretty skeptical about continued support. I'm already not quite sure if I'm willing to fork over money to the dev given his previous record though. What are clients like Tween like these days anyway?

Re: What exactly does Jaws change when it gets installed?

@camlorn:Yeah, it was because of things like the hook and mirror driver that prompted me to ask this question in the first place. I honestly didn't know Jaws was probably responsible for half the redistributables, but I'm pretty sure I remember someone telling me years ago about the hook doing what it does. What would happened if Microsoft just decided tomorrow to remove support for the mirror driver? I don't imagine it gets used much in modern day apps, but how much does Jaws rely on it outside legacy support?I didn't even know the resolution issue was a thing, though given that at one time or another I've heard that if you upgrade certain hardware in the system it somehow conflicts with your license, this doesn't surprise me much. I'm also not sure if the latter still holds true now.

What exactly does Jaws change when it gets installed?

I installed Jaws on a system recently to see what it was like after not using it for close to a decade. I remember in the installation it randomly said landscape. I'm guessing that either the installer was running some background checks to see if everything was functioning properly, or it did in fact change my display orientation. I began to wonder just what other system settings it messed with along the way, more so out of curiosity.Does anyone know if it changes things and what?

no no, what I mean is that you used to be able to view a list of windows you had hidden (I think it was something like alt NVDA l and it would show you a list of the windows you had hidden/what number they were. You used to be able to give windows custom titles and see a list of windows you currently have hidden, both of which are features that no longer seem to be there?Am I missing something?I used to use custom titles for things like audio repeaters in VAC and the window list was super helpful when you couldn't remember what number you'd set to what.

@turret:Yeah, Win 2K I believe had the first version of Narrator. I still don't think it's a fair comparison. Sure MS has the resources, but they have much bigger and better things to worry about than Narrator, so it seems. That's what you can do when you're a trillion dollar company though. I'm actually fairly okay with this too. Look at how far we've come with NVDA and the community it's spawned.

I'm not really sure that's a fair comparison to be honest. One has had a decade and a half of extremely active development, as well as a community behind it. The other has whatever MS decides to throw at it, again maybe once every 1/2 years. I'm sure narrator has it's uses, but best free screen reader though?

Re: I'm looking into the arctis pro wireless, but some questions?

Think it comes down to personal preference after a point. For me personally, being able to use both bluetooth/2.4 ghz simultaneously is definitely pretty sexy. I love the idea of the extra battery too. Seriously, if I'm spending that much on a wireless headset then really why should I ever be wired? Honestly the 5.1/7.1 thing hardly entered my mind. Surround sound emulation is just awful across the board. I've personally never been able to get behind it, anyway. You're trying to emulate 5/7 speakers and a sub in 2. What could possibly go wrong? Its a hefty price to spend on a headset, but I very much intend these to be my daily driver for years to come which is really the only way I can soundly justify it. Mic doesn't at all sound like anything that would blow you out of the water, but I've truly never heard what I'd consider a "good" wireless headset mic. Maybe the closest might be the hyper x cloud flight?

Re: I Have to Use Jaws For a Few Hours, and Here Are My Thoughts

I totally agree about the Jaws and word processing thing. Question though. If I alt-tab out of a webpage then back again later, Jaws seems to be at the top of the webpage. Is there a way to have it remember where you were? I'm so used to NVDA doing this, so when I used Jaws again recently for the first time in probably a decade, it totally through me off. Also that skim reading feature in Jaws is kinda neat too. I'm amazed there isn't some sort of addon for this.

@72:Its probably too early to ask, but do you ever see the ability for highlighted text to be able to be spoken? I was playing with this last night with the first thing I had available to me: Pokemon Emerald. It... kinda works.I've only tried with visual boy advance, I might have better luck with retroarch. That's not the point I was trying to make though. The potential here is really cool and is just 1 step closer to making what we probably once thought impossible.

Hi.So yesterday I got a Redmi note 8 pro and for the most part, I am seriously impressed by it. I have noticed that GBoard is a bit laggy though and am unable to effectively do any fast typing. I know at first when the device was launched, the keyboard was pretty slow for a lot of people. They've supposedly fixed a bunch of that through updates. Just wondering if anyone else with this or similar Xiaomi devices have ran into this problem?Global ROM, Android 9 w/ MiUI11More or less sure its an accessibility related issue at this point, turning TB off, the keyboard blazes along. If worst comes to worst I'll have to try and somehow get in contact with someone at Xiaomi and see what they can do. The rest of the phone behaves like a beast, considering its price.

Re: Question about Note 10.

My only real concern with CSR: Say if you found an app that wasn't accessible. You write to the dev about accessibility and what they could do to fix this. Firstly, how accessible are the various API's for CSR? Or how much would someone have to go out of the way to make something accessible for CSR vs. Making something accessible for talkback? Like it or not, there are still a much greater number of Talkback users I'd wager, so you're wanting the most practical solution for the dev who's making the app accessible. I'd love to see CSR become more popular though, it is very, very snappy.

Re: Suggestions for Switching from iOS to Android (Pixel 4)

Honestly, my only concern with using Commentary at this point is when it comes back to relaying accessibility needs to developers. Like it or not, Talkback is probably the first thing people see when looking up google accessibility. Its incorporated into most if not all phones at this point, commentary while pretty awesome, is not. It's distribution method is through a fairly high traffic telegram group because of Chinese government restrictions. I spent a few months in there actively participating. The lack of professionalism was pretty astounding. The admins made an off topic group (fair enough,) but I've seen more than a little off topic chat going on in the commentary group. My point is, commentary has a ton of potential and is definitely a breath of fresh air. For it to be taken seriously (and for me to comfortably promote it,) there's a lot of change that needs to happened. I'm really not at all sure why those features were removed in Talkback though. I didn't use a lot of them personally, though I'm sure people did. What's wrong with having a shortcut to dim screen? At the very least, why not make it optional so that if the user would rather use that shortcut for something else, they can. While I can definitely see the pros and cons of having 1 universal screen reader, is fragmentation a whole lot better? I don't think either is wrong; when do we get to a point of too much choice though?

Inconsistent navigation for things like headings, though I'm not sure in what world headings and landmarks are one in the same, Talkback. Also what do you mean Commentary has a flicktype keyboard? You can disable explore by touch and type with GBoard's predictive feature, hoping it'll get the right one, or you can use soft braille keyboard. Maybe I'm just not practiced enough at it but I still find braille screen keyboards (at least on Android) really awkward to type with. Haven't tried BSI as flicktype is fine when I'm on iOS.

Re: Switching from IOS to android, any tips?

Yes it does. It's important to note though that it only dims the screen, not completely disable it. Only phones that can basically do that are Samsung ones. Either way, if you do a down and right swipe (all in 1 gesture) to get to Talkback's global context menu, the option is in there. There's also an option in Talkback's settings to enable it every time you turn TB on. Commentary also has it, though it's in a slightly less obvious place. Use the same gesture as described above to access the equivalent of the global context menu, but then swipe straight down from there to access the extended menu. Actually I think by default you swipe right, but I changed mine to behave more like Talkback because swiping vertically down my screen just felt weird. I don't think there's an option to dim the screen if you're using commentary when it turns on though, so I think you need to manually do it every time. There's settings for just about everything though, so I could very well be wrong.

Have you tried changing voice? I ended up changing to Alex, so I wonder if that's a voice specific thing? I was on Ava before iOS 13, when I updated I got stuck with some really low quality version of uh... probably Samantha? All I know is it wouldn't let me change it. Yeah the status bar thing is a little annoying but I can deal. The only bugs I've been noticing so far are the ones where VO won't read elements as you're swiping. Simple example of this is the unlock screen showing your notifications. This could happend anywhere though. Quickest fix is just to leave the app or lock your phone, go back in and it *should* be fixed. Battery consumption is definitely up, though that's nothing new really for a new iOS release. Status bar thing I mentioned before. These are all known bugs and apparently Apple knows about a lot of them. I saw beta 4 was pushed yesterday for 13.1, so hopefully that should fix a lot of that. It's always fun seeing apps coming out of the woodwork that I haven't seen get updated in a year just to support iOS 13. Fun times.

This could happend anywhere though. Quickest fix is just to leave the app or lock your phone, go back in and it *should* be fixed. Battery consumption is defintiely up, though that's nothing new really for a new iOS release.

Dunno if I'll update tomorrow, think I'll hold off until a few of my most used apps are all good and vo bugs have been squashed.

Weird issue with bluetooth keyboard and GPD win.

Weird issue with bluetooth keyboard and GPD win.

So I know a few of you here have GPD's, so figured I'd ask.Up until recently, I was able to use my logetech K380 with almost minimal issue. I'd notice though, that sometimes it would just randomly lag for a second or two then stop responding. A workaround I found was to hit something like the windows and alt keys on the GPD itself, sometimes I'd have to do alt shift, etc. Has anyone else experienced this issue and been able to resolve it? Interestingly, I used to be able to use it for maybe an hour before having to implement the trick I stated above, sometimes it'd be 10 minutes. Now it's usually after a minute or two of connecting. I even went into device manager and made sure anything related to bluetooth was updated. I'm still looking, potentially to see if there are any drivers or bios fixes for the GPD specifically. I still have yet to see if I can find a USB keyboard here to test this with, to make sure it is in fact related to either bluetooth or the keyboard itself.

Re: GPD Win 2 - First Impressions

Yeah, I'm very excited for the next few years. I think we're getting yet another revised version of the GPD 2 early next year, but I'm not sure we'll see a full upgrade for a while. I have the last version of the GPD 1 and honestly can't say I use it much. I think it's biggest problem right now is the rather niche market it caters to. If this thing had come out a decade ago (at least, pre iOS/Droid) I think it would have been some seriously amazing tech.

As others have said, I'd probably go with the Galaxy line up as it would suit your needs pretty well. If you wanted a home button, the S7 might work for you. They removed it in the S8, unless some of the Galaxy J or A series still has them. In saying that, something like the iPhone 6S is actually still quite a decent phone, considering it's age. The battery life is the one thing that hasn't aged particularly well though. I can totally understand not wanting to fork out a grand for the latest flagship, but from a very new owner of an S10, I love it. I really don't think the bloatware issue is as prominent these days, I've certainly not felt it. I've personally changed a few default apps here and there, but that's usually because I'm looking for some sort of customization that the default Samsung equivalent doesn't offer. one UI is a well overdue change. While Commentary is a very young beast, a beast it is none the less. Alternative screen reader to Talkback that admittedly still needs work, but it's receiving updates every day and the developer is open to suggestions. Again for your needs though, Talkback should do fine.

Re: Does anybody own an android wear watch

The only demonstration I know of is on inclusiveandroid.com.As for whether or not they're good, that really comes down to personal preference. I personally wasn't a huge fan. To me the entire experience just feels like a really bland afterthought. Half the apps look like they were written by a 2 year old and seem to function about the same. I bought a super cheap one a year ago just to play with it then stuffed it in a drawer and kind of forgot about it. Accessibility is there, but depending on which watch you get, the time you get it, the version of Android it's on, whether the planets have aligned, whether your dogs name starts with M, you'll potentially need help to set up the watch the first time. Generally what seems to happened is that the TTS data gets installed when the watch connects to the internet. Hold 2 fingers on the screen for about 3 seconds to turn on Talkback. If you're lucky, it'll start right away and you'll be good. If not, then you'll have to get someone to connect it to the internet at which point you should be able to proceed. I don't really believe we have an Android equivalent to the Apple Watch, most tech sites all seem to agree on that point. Lastly, make sure the watch you're looking to buy has a speaker! Most Droid watches don't. I think most if not all the Ticwatch's do, LG sport, Asus Zenwatch 2, I'm sure I'm missing some.

What makes people choose Android over IOS or the other way round?

2018-04-19 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : cj89 via Audiogames-reflector

What makes people choose Android over IOS or the other way round?

So I have both an Android and iOS device, but to be honest I'm really torn. I tried Android again recently, and as far as accessibility goes it's actually come a long way. In saying that, I've noticed a few things that make me unsure. Don't worry, iOS I'm coming for you too. When 1 thing breaks, everything does. For the first week I tried it, google assistant (something which I use multiple times a day) was working like a charm. I was beginning to become hopeful that I'd finally found something that was doing what I wanted it to. But then...Updates can be a beautiful thing. From adding more accessibility, to more features, to over bloating an app; who new data mining could be such a large feature? In the case of google assistant, it just broke. Dictation in google search broke completely, to the point that literally nothing I said would go into the box. Until the update, I was able to dictate into any field and hit pause as soon as I was done and literally 99 times out of 100 it would get everything I said right down to the letter. After that, pausing would result in holding my dictation until I resumed at which point it would be entered in twice. I'd also noticed that words would be missing, usually the last word I'd said before I hit pause. If not on par, then spotify would definitely be a close second to one of my most used apps. Around the same time google search broke, the ability to have google play music from spotify did too. Usually you could say "hey google, play enter sandman by Metallica"  or some variation there of, and it would just happened. It got to the point where spotify would open, but would not actually play the song I requested. Instead it would just sit there in the main area and do nothing. Research into both these things didn't yield much. I read that for spotify you could clear it's cache (that seems to be at least a temp thing for most apps) and that would usually fix it. It did, for about a day or so. I did this 3 or 4 times before I started questioning why I continuously had to go through this process.Delay in features.I totally understand that Android and iOS are very different beasts to develop for, and that porting things over is not always as easy as 1, 2, 3. As trivial as it might sound to some, what's app's push up to keep recording feature is something I personally use a lot. This was rolled out for iOS at the end of November, with promises of the feature coming to Android soon. At my time of testing, this was mid February with no such feature in sight. My question is, why does it feel like Android still gets absolutely shafted? For something that makes up about 86 percent of the market, I'd think that it would be absolutely within their best interest to pay attention to the platform. In saying that, the fragmentation of Android definitely makes that a challenging thing. Is that really what's to blame though? In fairness, google are definitely taking steps to try and resolve that, as well as accessibility, It should also be noted that at the time I was running Android 7 on a Galaxy S7 (when preview builds for Android P if not already a thing were at least talked about). Am I just really unlucky? Is stock droid experience really that much better?I can already hear people telling me that I should just root my phone, but honestly I don't really have a problem with the rest of the samsung stuff. Touchwiz is leagues better than it was in 2012/2013 from what I've been told, and honestly not conforming to killing the 3.5mm jack is actually doing a lot more for me than I would've thought.iOS/iPhone, is that you hiding back in the corner there? I said I'd get to you, didn't I?First of all, Siri. Just a monumental piece of garbage (I think most people would be in agreement of that.) Apparently in the creation process of Siri there was a lot of BS which is half the reason it is what it is today.New phone updates just becoming uninspiring.I can't really fault anyone for this, but it really seems to stand out with Apple. I'd honestly say that the last big thing was probably Siri. We've had a lot of cool little things with iCloud, iMessage and whatnot, but despite getting an iPhone 8 plus last year, I'm finding it harder and harder to convince people why they should upgrade to the new phone. The thing is though, the same people that have said that are the same people that have already told Apple they're perfectly fine with this (myself included). I will happily admit that I'm contradicting myself quite a bit here, but it's really only now I'm starting to question all this.Next, the 1 size fits all approach."Don't like using this app and feel that for you another one would work better? Want to said this app as a default? Wo there partner, slow down." Seriously, I feel like I'm literally repeating what someone's surely said word for word at this point. Why do we have to be coddled? I understand that there are *A

[[wow]] I had no idea Samsung keyboard was actually a freely open thing (I'm still pretty new to Android.) Assuming it's the same one that ships with the galaxy's then yeah that ones pretty good, definitely the one I can use the fastest on Android. I liked the idea of gBoard although it felt really laggy when dragging my finger around. I think someone said it was better in Android 8, but I can't confirm yet. I'm on an S7 and waiting for Oreo to drop. Their event is on Sunday, so hopefully it should start dropping not too long after that. I guess you could try fleksy if that's still a thing and you didn't mind experimenting. If it's like iOS then it's probably not terribly accessible anymore. I'm not really sure whatever happened on their end, but I think there were some pretty drastic changes made super quickly and since then we've been left in the dust. Oh well.

Re: GPD Win Is it worth it?

As an owner of one myself, I'll try to cover as much as I can. When reviews say that it's a palm computer, they're not kidding. If you've seen a 3DS, that's basically what it looks like. The touch screen is 5.5 inch, so the equivalent of an iPhone 8 plus.Below the screen starting from the top left, the first thing you see is the D-pad. I believe they've updated this in the GPD 2. I don't know if it's just my unit, but the up arrow on it feels a little mushier than the rest. In the centre just below the screen, you have a switch that switches the controller between D/X inputs and mouse emulation. You use the right stick by default to move the mouse around. To the right of that switch is your standard xBox face button arrangements (X/Y, A/B)Slightly down and to the right of the D-Pad you have you're L and R analogue sticks.Down and very slightly left of the D-Pad you have the start of the top row of keyboard keys starting with escape and accent, proceeded by a typical number row.Below that is the rest of your standard qwerty keyboard. If anyone actually wants a full explanation I'll gladly come back and edit this, it's one of those things you almost have to see to believe they actually shoved all this into such a tiny unit. The keyboard leaves a bit to be desired, but with a bit of practice it's usable. You'll almost definitely want an external keyboard for this if you're planning to write essays with it.My final thoughts:While I think it's an awesome computer, I'd urge you to keep in mind that it's not meant to be a super portable powerhouse, or really even a laptop. It can serve as one if you need it to and are a little patient at times. I haven't yet tried a lot of mainstream gaming on it, so I'll keep you updated if there's enough interest. For just about any audio game you're good though. It is advised when you get it that you should reinstall windows, which apparently helps performance. I've still yet to do this, but so far I haven't had too much issue with it. I think the most trouble I've had is playing something like A Hero's Call, where the CPU tends to spike a little and NVDA runs off to sulk in the corner. I don't know how much of that is win related vs game though, because I don't recall having that issue for the first half of the game.I have noticed after a while that the unit does seem to run a bit hot, which you can help if you switch the fan to full (there's a switch on the bottom)If you want my personal opinion, I'd wait a few months and see what the 2 is like. I've been watching reviews of a tester in the US over the past month or so, and it definitely seems like they've listened to the community. We'll see one way or the other!Edit:Thanks Chris for mentioning the slow charging aspect. I think if you're not using it it will charge faster, but it still takes a good 4 5 hours.

Re: Podcatchers for Windows, what are people using these days?

As someone who has used the method described in post 8 in the past, I can say it works very well. These days I don't really bother podcasting on windows though, my phone does exactly what I need it to. Failing that, iTunes on the mac. It might be a tiny bit more effort to set up foo podcatcher, but if I can discourage anyone from resorting to Q cast then I absolutely will.

Achieving best possible results with OCR?

Basically, the subject says it all. Is there anything you do to try and achieve the best possible OCR? Whether it be a game or what have you. Stuff like adjusting screen resolution, trying a bigger monitor if availible, etc etc

Re: audio on dell inspiron laptop

I was able to use screen review with the UI perfectly fine. Unless somethings vastly different now, that should work. I never had much luck getting the internal mic to sound much better though.

Re: I think this android accessibility site is broken.

2016-08-31 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : cj89 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: I think this android accessibility site is broken.

I just bought me a new Droid literally a few hours ago. (the Galaxy S7 Edge.) I've been messing round with Droid on and off for a few years, and was forced to drag out my Nexus 5 again about a month ago. Even after I'd gotten my iPhone fixed, I persisted and have grown to love Android. Talkback is steadily improving all the time, and the flexibility Android offers is pretty awesome imo. Things like being able to change your screen launcher, shove widgets onto your home screen, being able to choose default apps, being able to use services like Google now which is more open to interacting with other apps (I use it for Spotify in particular.) I won't be the first to tell you that Talkback is Voiceover, because it isn't. If you *must* be super proficient then I'd suggest you use Voiceover hands down. I'm personally not bothered by the lack of typing echo, since I've used none for just about as long as I can remember. I won't deny that it is lack
ing, and Talkback on the whole needs work. If you can pick up a cheap device for testing purposes, I would definitely encourage it. Heres a few other things to keep in mind:Android for the most part is coded in Java, which admittedly isn't quite the same as Objective C in terms of performance. That being said though, the language in which something is coded isn't always an accurate performance base to work with. Again the winner here is probably Apple. While their hardware may be somewhat primitive, they're forced to work within those limitations, so optimization is a huge deal.Talkback isn't as tied in with the OS as vo is. Meaning that you won't always have to wait for an OS update to see improvements. With this being said, there's also a much higher market of VI users that have iPhones, so Apple basically *have* to get it right.I could go on, but the long and short of it is, try it out for yourself. If you decide you like it, there&
#039;s dozens of phones on the cheap, so you may not be as limited to that next contract, or Apple's RRP.
