Re: english accents

@sebby: Everything *is* fine, as long as the message gets across. Anything else is unnecessary elitism, and is used exclusively to disadvantage those of a different culture or socioeconomic status from yourself. So long as the message is understood, bigotry is the only possible reason to enforce any false ideal of so-called correct English. It can sometimes be OK to have a laugh, for example at Spammers who arent attempting to communicate within the rules of the social contract, or at large companies who could have hired better translation talent, but thats as far as it can ever be allowed to go. Anything else is just class or race related bullying. I will feel free to continue to shun those who participate in this unacceptable type of activity. Mocking speakers of American English is no different from mocking those with a different skin colour. If dark feels I need a ban for this uncompromising stance, he can feel free to go ahead;
I have no intention of sitting down and keeping my mouth shut. As someone who has no difficulty writing in so-called standard English syntax, its even more important to me that I not permit myself to be lumped in with this nonsense. I find it extremely telling that Dark found it necessary to go to what sounds like a lot of effort, just to change his accent, apparently in order to avoid exactly the kind of bigotry Im up in arms about. Also, I have no idea if you were joking, and I dont really care. The important thing about a joke is that it should be funny, and all of your messages were exactly the opposite. You are also continuing to express the extremely objectionable point of view that anything Sebby has difficulty understanding (like Geordy) or anything Sebby doesnt like (like US English) must be a different language. The fact that you are willing to admit that you dislike US English in formal settings makes it quite clear that you
find that type of English, and thus that class of people, to be inferior. I dont expect I can change your opinions, so all I can do is publicly voice my dislike of them, in hopes of reminding the lurkers that yours is a minority opinion that is unacceptable in wider society.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177740#p177740

@dark: To engage in a discussion of a set of opinions legitimizes them, and that is not something I am willing to do with any opinion or set of opinions that promotes, or seems to promote, inequality of any kind. Though I am Canadian, and we do have extremely strong hate speech laws, and have in the past used them to ban Dr Laura and Howard Stern. I have previously found myself set flat-footed by the largely American idea of free speech. I have never had someone successfully explain to me how, and why, speech that promotes inequality can be also promoting freedom. It still sounds like double-think to me. If someone wants to take a crack at that one though, start another thread, or even better send me an e-mail (not a PM because I expect to be banned after this message), because thats way off topic. Im just trying to give a bit of insight into my background. And as someone who isnt American, I am not personally targeted by this particular unpleasantnes
 s. But my personal code of ethics doesnt let me pass on standing against what I believe to be wrong, just because it isnt affecting me, this time. And I used the word apparently in discussing your change of accent, precisely because I was unsure of your exact motivation, and was going by what seemed apparent, to me. I do know many people who have switched accents for that reason, but youre not one of them. Fair enough. Your idea that opinions are, or can be, Innocent, is not something that I understand even slightly. I mean, what on earth is a guilty opinion? Everyone has opinions and convictions, and everyone, including myself, must be held to account for the opinions they express. I fully admit to having absolutely no idea what you are trying to say, there. My best guess is that you believe that people can have whatever opinion they would like, but if...somehow...the opinion is found Innocent, they shouldnt be judged for that opinion
? What determines if an opinion is Innocent or not? Or do you mean that if youre not an expert in the subject matter, your opinion is Innocent, because you dont have the knowledge to be judged for it? If thats what you mean, why should anyone be allowed to express an Innocent opinion, if they cant back it up with either knowledge or personal experience? I suspect that our mental geographies might be far, far too alien from one another to make any headway at all, there, so again, you might want to take that to another thread, or better, an email, or probably best, just not bother. Anyway, its been a fun and interesting 4 years, everyone! When I get banned, I do not expect to ever be back, as I suspect that my convictions are different enough from Darks that we will never be able to achieve any common ground here. For anyone who wants it, my email address is sam...@interfree.ca. I cant really be found on an
y other public forums, as I find the vast majority of them just arent worth my time, due to unfair moderation, or unintelligent people. Lastly, Im not blaming Dark for banning me. I am posting, in full knowledge of what the results will be, as my personal ethics require. I expect that Dark will also follow his own personal convictions and ethics, and ban me for it. Re: Traveling to Canada, any tips?

For those of you thinking about moving to Canada, another thing to keep in mind is disability pensions. The amount you get, and how you qualify, changes from province to province, and is extremely different in each one. Based on discussions I have had with friends, nowhere in Canada is it as well administered, or do you get as much money, as in the UK or places in Europe. So accessibility does come with its related disadvantages, always assuming you think of that as a disadvantage.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177763#p177763

Re: english accents

@dark: I based my judgment on the following statement, in a previous post, by Sebby: it always infuriates me when American English creeps into formal contexts. This strongly implies that he believes American English should only be used in informal contexts, and I cant see any reason for that belief, other than a feeling that American English is inferior English. Im not sure what point you are trying to make, in telling me that Sebby is part of a minority group. In my experience, minorities, the disabled, and every other sub-group of people are equally prone to racism and bigotry. If I were trying to say he was prejudiced against people from Turckey, I could understand your purpose in saying this. But Im not; Im accusing him of prejudice and bigotry towards various English dialects, and I dont see how his cultural identity has any relation to that. I honestly came really, really close to reporting Sebbys first post,
but didnt, because you had previously asked me to stop jumping the gun with my reports. I also did not believe you would act on my report, so the only way I could make the fact that I found the post unacceptable clear and unmistakable was to express it. And I did not intend to imply that I believe you are some kind of evil emperor. While I believe you are sometimes, maybe even frequently, wrong about a large number of things, I have immense respect for your job as a moderator. I will say that, on a reading of the rules, I cant really see what rule you would ban me under, or even what rule youre issuing me warnings over. However, following the rules exactly as written is never a good thing, because moderators need the flexibility to do what they believe is right, and rules lawyering never helped anyone. I believe that in banning me, and in your belief that Sebby has said nothing wrong, you are incorrect. But if you believe that yo
u are right, as you obviously must, you have to act on your beliefs without compromise. I always do what I believe to be right, no matter what the consequences, and think everyone else should do the same. Your threat to ban me, therefor, must have had one of the following purposes:1. You want me to stop doing what I am doing, and show respect for opinions that I find distasteful in the extreme. I will not do this.2. You find my speech harmful in some way, and believe it must be suppressed. Asking me to stop saying what I am saying will not work, because I believe the posts that I have made in this thread are an ethical imperative for me. 3. You want me to leave the community for some other reason. You seem to have just indicated that this isnt the case. As I cant compromise on my ethics, I dont see that you have any alternative but to ban me. I dont want to be banned, either, obviously.&
nbsp; But I dont see that I have ever done anything wrong, either by violating the rules, or otherwise. So if you believe I am harming your community, I cannot and will not change, so youll have to protect the rest of the community from whatever it is about me you find dangerous or objectionable. I suppose you could delete all of my posts that you dislike, for whatever reason, and that would probably eventually prompt me to leave the community on my own, but in my opinion, that would be a much less honourable solution than just kicking me out. The last time I was this close to getting banned was the filters issue. The only reason that never happened was because you compromised nearly completely on that one, changed all of the filter text to [spam], and delete filters I complain about almost immediately. Unless I am misunderstanding the depths of your convictions, Im not sure that a similar compromise on your part is possible over this issue,
and I know that it isnt from me. So, yeah. This isnt criticism of you, or the rest of the moderation team. Its just a clear statement from me of where I believe that we stand. I have no idea if or how we can move forward from this point.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=16#p16

Re: english accents

@sebby: That is offensive and bigoted nonsense. Do East Indians speak Indian then, not Indian English? And I guess Koreans always speak Korean, even when theyre actually speaking Korean English (IE words like handphone, and expressions like fighting! etc). The idea that American and Australian are languages is so obviously stupid I think I can safely ignore it without comment. Living in Canada will make you aware that hundreds of thousands of English dialects exist, as it has become kind of an international language, and the number based on or even remotely related to British English are the vast minority. Most are based off of various pigeons, American English via missionaries and the media, the influences of other Latin descended languages, or second-hand teaching (an ESL Pakistani teachers teaching English, for example). Please try and keep your linguistic racism out of an otherwise useful discussion, and remember that dialect is a real word,
with a real meaning, that you dont get to redefine just because you hate foreigners speaking your precious language. @dark: Until recently, whenever North Americans referred to British English, we almost always meant RP. While we were vaguely aware of the other accents, they were always Yorkshire, or Welsh, or whatever, and British English always had that one clear meaning. However, with the recent popularity of things like Dr Who, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc, this has started to change. Also, the BBC has relaxed significantly about the kind of accents it allows over the World Service in the last 10 years or so, so the perception that British English is the primary accent in the UK is starting to fade away. Interestingly, there are 5 different Canadian English accents, and you will hear none of them on the CBC. We could stand to take a page out of the BBCs book and chill out a little, I think.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177646#p177646

Re: Free Anonymous bittorrent vpn

@gellman: No, no, no, no! Please do not give this advice! If you use privatize VPN, they execute a man in the middle attack on, at least, all of your HTTPS traffic! Assuming they do the same on any other encrypted traffic, an assumption that I think is fair though I havent checked it, if you connect to a second VPN through Privatize VPN, they will now have your username and password for that second VPN! If you have used that username and password with any other service, you will need to change it. Also, as most VPN providers do not offer a different username and password for billing, you should assume that privatize now has access to any account information (name, address, credit card info, etc) that you gave your second VPN provider. You must assume that all data you send through the privatize service is, at best, getting sold to advertisers, but more likely, is being used for identity theft and other criminal activity. If you absolutely
*must* use privatize, it should be the last VPN in the chain, and you should never, ever, send any login details, OAuth tokens, or anything else even remotely private when youre connected. That means remembering to disable services like Google Drive and Dropbox, close your email, Twitter, and Facebook clients, turn off any instant messengers like Skype, etc, etc, etc, before sending absolutely any traffic through privatize. Even a virtual machine might not help you if, for example, that virtual machine has your Microsoft account on it, and Microsoft phones home for any particular reason, thus sending Privatize the details of your Microsoft account. Yes, they should check certificate validity. However, I am not absolutely sure every service does this, and even if they did, privatize could always start installing certificate authorities in the programs that will accept them, as they ask you to install custom software anyway. Re: Using Google Play music?

Well, it came to Canada about a month ago, and that is when I checked it out. Maybe the Catalogue in Canada is much smaller than the US catalogue? I searched on all of the artists in my rdio collection, so about 500 artists, and Google Music had only half of them. And the ones it did have, the albums available on Google Music were often fewer than the albums available on rdio. What I would really like is a way to combine my collections on bandcamp and rdio into one app. Then I would have my complete musical collection at my fingertips. Thats what drove me to check out Google Music, because if the catalogue had been nearly as good as rdio, I could have uploaded my bandcamp stuff and had what I wanted. Alas, it just was not so.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177484#p177484

Re: Using Google Play music?

No, it came to Canada just recently. But unfortunately, compared to rdio, the catalogue is rather lacking. It has the advantage that I can upload all my rare tracks, but thanks to rdio, I havent been buying albums for a few years now. And moving playlists between Google Music and rdio doesnt look like a thing you can do. Also, I find the rdio web app much less of a resource drain, and the iPhone app is slightly more stable for me. Also, rdio is available in like 40 countries, compared to Google Musics 2 or 3.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177322#p177322

Re: Traveling to Canada, any tips?

So, Ive lived in Toronto for my entire life. And how easy you will find it depends entirely on where you live. Toronto is a huge city, the third or fourth largest in North America I believe, and one part of the city is quite different from another. If you can manage it, try and live close to downtown. That is where the subways and streetcars are easiest to find and use. If you live out on the edge of the city, you could find yourself living as much as a 20 minute walk from the nearest bus stop, and a bus may only come to that stop once every 25 minutes, and the line may close entirely at midnight. Also, many places in Toronto do not have stores for groceries and other items within walking distance, especially near the residential edges of the city. However, if you can get a place to live that is near a subway, and within walking distance of groceries, youll find Toronto a perfectly lovely city! The transit system is fully acces
sible, and has automated announcements of all stops on subways, buses, streetcars, and light rail transit. Many major intersections have audible lights. Most large buildings have accessible elevators that announce the current floor, and have floor numbers in Braille. All of the ATM machines from major banks are accessible, if you bring your own headphones. In the winter, the sidewalks in commercial districts are generally shovelled quite well, though this is not the case if you live in a mostly residential area. We have audio described TV, and you can find described movies in theatres, though its often good to call ahead to verify that the description is available at the theatre you want to go to. One thing that you might find difficult is that cell phone data in Canada is extremely costly. You can expect to pay about $30CAD for one gig of wireless data. But if you are careful and keep your eyes open, you can find deals and promo
tions that can reduce that price to a quarter, or give you 6 times the data, but these only come once in a while. So using an app like BlindSquare on your iPhone will get really expensive, really fast. If you can, get a device that has the maps already downloaded for you. Also, if you live in Ontario, the law is that all alcohol must be sold by the government. So in Ontario alcohol costs 2 or 3 times as much as it does in other places. If you can manage it, I think the best place for a blind person to live in Toronto is in an apartment on Yonge Street, at Yonge and Finch, or anywhere south of there. There are subways and buses all around that area, and lots of stores you could walk to. But, of course, it might not be affordable. You could live right down town, near the two universities (University of Toronto and Ryerson University), where there is lots of cheap student housing. Unfortunately, because its cheap, there are also strip clu
bs, drug dealers, and all the rest. However, if you lock your doors, youll be fine; Ive been out on the street at 2 and 3 in the morning in that area, and the worst that ever happened to me was a really high angry man started yelling at me about how he was being tortured by the Angels of Satan, and Whitney Houston was spying on him. Most Canadians though are extremely friendly. But in Toronto, the thing to remember is that the city is extremely multicultural. It is possible to go for blocks and blocks without ever hearing a word of English. So if people seem cold and unfriendly, its often just because you happen to be in an area where nobody speaks English vary well, and so people are too nervous to say hi or try and strike up conversations. Growing up in Toronto, all the time I was in school, I was always the only person in my class who was born in Canada. While it can have the downside of making it harder to get to know people,
The huge varieties of languages, cultural traditions, and foods, has always been my favourite part of living in Toronto.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177078#p177078

Re: most accessible podcasting client?

I like Downcast, but its only on IOS and OSX. I think Foobar2000 has a podcast component, but it isnt free. XBMC can do podcasts, and is perfectly accessible, but I havent played with it to see how well it handles downloading, and I dont think it can sync your podcasts with an mp3 player or anything. If you just want to listen to podcasts on your computer, XBMC would be your best bet. Otherwise, fiddle with foobar2000, use IOS or OSX, or buy QCast.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177130#p177130

Re: Youtube and accessibility features.

Not all youtube videos support this, though. Because HTML5 has no DRM, you will find that every video with embedding turned off, plus a lot of music videos, will still use the old flash player. But in other good news, for videos that do use the new accessible player, automatic captions and subtitles can be read out by NVDA: just press captions, and then press the on button. Also, annotations sometimes usually often work on occasion once in a while. So there is that. But if you have an iPhone, and you dont already have the YouPlayer app, you should get it right now. Its the best and most accessible youtube experience on any platform, anywhere. Post comments! Read comments! Like and dislike! Playlists that actually work and auto-advance! Skip through videos! A pause button that really works, and unpauses where you left off! Its amazing! Almost like a video site that has all the features our media players had back in 1997! H

That depends on where you live. In Canada, multiple tests have shown that bottled water is much, much worse than tap water. The bottled water has more chemicals and germs, and no minerals. But Canada has some of the best tap water in the world. In fact, there was recently a news story about some company just bottling Canadian tap water and selling it internationally. @CAE_Jones: Yup. Youve been spending way too much time at less wrong, lately. @ghost rider: Im glad I checked your name before typing it, because I honestly thought it was a reference to the 90s childrens TV show Ghost Writer. But apparently it isnt. The best advice I can give you is to just ignore anything negative anyone says online. If you hold any unpopular opinions, about absolutely anything, ever, and dont fit the group think of whatever online community youre participating in, you are going to get called things a lot worse than stupid. At this point, I dont consider my online week complete unless someone has told me I am worthless and should go kill myself, and/or threatened my friends/family/pets. If you do have some particular problem with your behaviour, either online or off, someone will bring it up to you without being insulting. People who use insults like stupid and dumb are never wo
rth listening to. People who take the time to put things diplomatically have usually actually thought about what they are saying, have some ideas about how you could improve yourself, and are generally correct. Dont bother with anyone who cant be bothered to give you more and better feedback than youre stupid. Most communities have ignore functions, and those people are exactly what theyre for. Also, dont take the remarks people make in hack and slash, multiplayer games like Miriani, Alter Aeon, or Swamp at all seriously. I believe freeshell.org has VIM, if you dont want to make a Linux server just for text editing. The only troubles you will have are that if you hold down the down arrow, intending to skip a bunch quickly, your screen will be lagged thanks to the fact that SSH is remote, and NVDA will lose the cursor, and the world will be confusion. I listened to the first minute or so of Turn About storm, and got the impression some of the dialog was on-screen, in the style of Phoenix Wright, so never bothered with it beyond that. As for reharmonized ponies, I am just in it for the voice acting, and thats pretty good. I dont think Id bother reading it with text to speech if that were the only option. Also, I dont watch cartoons (seriously: MLP is the only cartoon Ive ever watched more than 4 or 5 episodes of in my life) so the crossovers dont bother me. And I started reading fanfic long before I even bothered with the show itself, so Im used to the various fanfic universes, and in my head they feel just as valid as the official cannon. I tried to get into anthropology, but I just couldnt. The writing felt kind of slow and a little bit...stiff, or something. Yeah, but there are lots of other players that can use Winamp playlists: foobar2000, VLC, XBMC, Cog, Rhythmbox, Amarok, etc, etc, etc. Every radio station website I visit these days, not just MLP stations, assumes you want to listen in your browser. Why? Do most people really not want an audio player these days? Please assume the following space contains a 6 thousand or so word rant on why embedded players suck. Re: Text editor for Android

Unfortunately, my android tablet is packed away in a box...somewhere or other...as I get ready to move, so I cant make you a recording. But if you can afford the $12 (yeah, thats a little steep!) I think this does everything you want:https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … oft.editorit works with a bluetooth keyboard, at any rate. Im not a huge user of this type of app though, because I have never found a portable bluetooth keyboard that works well enough that I would be willing to use it to type long texts. But then, I am ridiculously spoiled by my Das Keyboard that a good friend got me for Christmas a couple years ago:http://shop.daskeyboard.com/collections … te-model-sIf you are not using a clicky keyboard, then you are not achieving even a third of the typing speed that you could. Also, you have not lived a fulfilling and happy life. LOL JK. Mostly.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175735#p175735

Hmmm, Reharmonized Ponies is pretty good. And those same people made another one...I cant remember the title, though. It had the word discord in it. Its more of a graphic-audio style dramatic reading, but it does have effects and music, and the voice acting is super. I enjoyed all of the Doctor Whooves stuff for what it is, even though sometimes the production values arent so good. Oh! _The Vinyl Scratch Tapes: The Master Recording_ did a really good job of turning kind of crappy production values into a virtue. The premise of the series is that Vinyl and Octavia are in charge of Equestrias first ever independent radio station. It goes pretty much how you would expect. Also, there are some good fallout dramatic readings, but youve probably heard those already.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175741#p175741

Firstly, because I would like to purchase the good bits and support the artist if I can, and secondly, because the audio from transcoded mp3 rips of youtube videos sucks bad enough that it bothers me. I did check bandcamp, but it wasnt helpful. Maybe artists dont sell the stuff because of IP issues? But even if so, theres just gotta be a better music archive than youtube, right? right? *cries*URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175618#p175618

Both of the official albums are also on rdio, and thus probably Spotify as well, for people like me who have gone the cloud subscription model. There are official Daring Do novels? I...am not sure how I feel about that. Curious, but not curious enough to want to pay $9.99 for an e-book, I think covers it. So hopefully theyll be on bookshare or somewhere. There is so much good MLP related audio stuff, someone should really set up an internet radio station for it all! There are, like, thousands of hours of audio dramas, interviews, music, etc. Radio Equestria? Oh, never mind. The internet is way ahead of me. Down the rabbit hole I go! Wait, wait, wait...The Equestrian Broadcasting Company Presents... I demand that you tell these people to stop spying on my dreams! If they use a modified version of the NBC chimes I am actually going to be just slightly freaked out. Re: Anyone Tried Citadel BBS and Groupware?

So, I know we have some newer Debian citadel admins here, and you are going to have this problem. When apt-get decides that init.d is broken and stuck in a horrible loop of doom, and complains about totally unrelated packages like checkroot and btsync, this is, in fact, citadels fault. To fix it, edit the file /etc/init.d/webcitAnd insert the following near the top, directly under the bang path:### BEGIN INIT INFO# Provides:  webcit# Required-Start:# Required-Stop:# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5# Default-Stop: 0 1 6# Short-Description: Start daemon at boot time# Description: Enable service provided by daemon.### END INIT INFOAnd then reinstall the packages that broke, and everything will be happy again. If youre interested in why, you can start with:http://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/LSB … sinit.htmlBut when apt-get is totally broken and you have no idea why, youre probably not interested in learning about LSB.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175369#p175369

Hi:OTP assumes that you can send a bunch of pads to your users every month. That just isnt the case. And I dont think you understand how the Google Authenticator app works. It generates tokens that expire every 30 seconds. And the tokens are generated based on a shared secret that is different for each service. And each shared secret is different depending on when it was generated. So if my iPhone is stolen, I can disable the shared secret that my iPhone is using, so no tokens generated by that secret will be valid. But the tokens generated by my Android phone are still fine. So an attacker has to:1. Get hold of one of my devices, before I notice and disable its token.2. Already know my password.3. Know what website/service each shared secret corresponds with. So, while this obviously isnt ultimate security, its the closest those of us who arent willing to spend trillions of
dollars snailmailing one time pads to every single user we have are going to get. And yes, based on number of users and the cost of international postage per month, I am not overestimating the cost; one time pads would actually cost me upwards of 1 trillion dollars.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175203#p175203

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@cantorlot: re: xanth fanfic: He almost always knows who the potential visitors are, and almost every book starts the adventure with a group of people going to visit the good magician. Honestly, right now Im still just having Pony problems. I started off writing a few chapters with the elements of harmony visiting xanth. I had several various challenges and goals planned out, and I was going to split them into groups of two, and alternate between the three groups from chapter to chapter, with an overall story arc lasting about 12 chapters. The problem is that the way I right fanfic feels most like inviting a collection of existing characters into my head to sit around a table and play a long and intricate game of lets pretend, and I realized that Twilight is the only element I love enough to want to have her living in my head for an extended period of time. So then I wrote a few chapters involving Princess Luna and Lyra, but they are best not spoken of, bec
ause they were so bad that Im afraid Luna might come back and yell at me some more. Also, Lyra gets far too distracted by humans to ever accomplish anything at all in xanth, and thats why all of my challenges were just getting totally derailed by those two. So this morning I started everything again as a Vinyl Scratch and Octavia Melody fic. But then I realized I needed a Pegasus for stuff that needs to happen later, so Derpy Hooves got involved for a while, but it just wasnt working out between her and the other two ponies. Finally, I remembered that xanth itself has a vast collection of flying equines, so now Im going through the xanth concordance, and rereading parts of the various books, to try and find Vinyl and Octavia the perfect tour guide to xanth. But as I continue down this route, Im feeling more and more like using a collection of background ponies is a cop-out, and the fic is going to lose all of its MLP flavou
r, and be a xanth novel with some vaguely familiar names. Im actively considering restarting everything as a fic where several xanth characters get dumped in Equestria and have to find a way back to xanth. That would let me keep my ponies, and avoid the good magician entirely. The problem is, it would make the entirety of my plot outline totally useless, and I just have no plot at all for a xanth characters in Equestria fic. So, to make a long story short, I have wound up writing 9 chapters, of about 1 words each, and none of them are going anywhere but the trash. Are you starting to see why my writing expeditions never wind up getting published where anyone can see them? I am perfectly capable of writing about 4 more story starts of 2 or 3 chapters each, and then getting distracted and going off to do something else.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175013#p175

@sebby: generally, the way I handle it for things I control, and that are open enough to let me do it, is by closing everything up with iptables, and providing a web interface that users are required to log in to. The web interface handles the two factor, and once log-in is successful, opens up, for example, the SSH port, for 10 minutes, to the IP that successfully completed two factor. Unfortunately, this solution is not a good one for IMAP, as most people want access for there phones to check email every 10 minutes. So unfortunately application level passwords are the only way to go. But in combination with only allowing 1 sent email per minute per user, it isnt too bad.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=174996#p174996

So, I might be the last person on earth to find out about this:http://ruuk.github.io/service.xbmc.tts/Install XBMC from there, and it will be totally accessible with NVDA. This is going to make my wireless remote media viewing so much easier. Im not sure if it can be made to run on mac yet, but I sure hope so, seeing as most of my TV episodes are on a mac mini.
Finally, I remembered that xanth itself has a vast collection of flying equines, so now Im going through the xanth concordance, and rereading parts of the various books, to try and find Vinyl and Octavia the perfect tour guide to xanth. r, and be a xanth novel with some vaguely familiar names. So, to make a long story short, I have wound up writing 9 chapters, of about 1 words each, and none of them are going anywhere but the trash. Are you starting to see why my writing expeditions never wind up getting published where anyone can see them? I am perfectly capable of writing about 4 more story starts of 2 or 3 chapters each, and then getting distracted and going off to do something else.URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=175013#p175013

Re: The Email God Requires Assistance for a Mighty Purpose

@sebby: fortunately, citadel was only in use on several slightly less critical domains, for more adventurous organizations, who had previously agreed to conducting the experiment. Mostly, Im looking for something that is more cost effective for multiple small (4 to 6) user organizations. Google apps is $50 per user per year, and most of the functionality isnt used (lots of people only have like 120 mb of email), and is missing other functionality that is wanted (internal wikis/blogs/forums, especially) so they wind up paying more to other organizations for that, or having entirely separate forum/calendar/blog systems that arent at all integrated with the email system. Actually, Im getting a little bit burned, because the people who have citadel dont want to give it up! So I could well find myself stuck running citadel in a couple places and just having to swallow my hatred, and hope nothing breaks so hard I cant make it go agai
 n. If there was some organization that would host citadel installations for a similar price to Google apps, and provide 24/7 support, handle updates and security, and all the rest, Id probably go with that.URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174967#p174967

Re: The Email God Requires Assistance for a Mighty Purpose

@sebby: Actually, I had already done that. The problem happened because one of the account passwords was changed to be...not a good password. And citadel doesnt have methods of restricting emails per user per minute, it does not lock out IP addresses for making an extreme number of incorrect SMTP log-in attempts, it does not have two factor authentication support, and it does not allow administrators to enforce rules about password strength. So someone brute forced the amazingly complicated account password Password.123, and was able to crap all over the smtp queue. This is really, really basic security stuff. I didnt even check to see if citadel did some of these things before deploying, because it just seemed so astonishingly obvious that everything on the modern internet has to do this, that it would feel like checking to make sure a car youre about to buy has a steering wheel. Though I admit that Password.
123 probably would comply with most password policies that people tend to set; it has uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and punctuation. But its still a terrible password.URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174970#p174970

@cantorlot: Youve only read the first book, and already the authors obsession with the female figure is bothering you. [[wow]]. You have a long journey ahead, my friend. I say the authors obsession, because every single one of his male characters does this. In every single book hes ever written. When I was 13, I had hormones, and so I didnt have a problem with it, and honestly thought that all adult men were like that, not realizing it was something I would grow out of, and that its kind of creepy. I also thought that because xanth had what I considered to be strong female characters, it was OK for the author to obsess about boobs and somehow wasnt objectification. I really didnt mean my MLP review to come across as recommending Xanth to an adult who has never read it. There is a reason I couldnt reconnect with those characters after university. Unless Im overestimating your age, and yo
ure a mature 16. In that case, have fun; youve got a couple years left where you can enjoy xanth. As for the rest of your questions, if you read books 2 and 3, some of them will get answered. But its important to remember that Piers Anthony believes that Lawful Stupid is not just a thing on TVTropes, its the 1 true and correct way to live your life. This also comes across in all of his books. So the distrust for Trent wasnt because trent was evil as you and I would think of it, but because he was, to borrow DM terminology, chaotic good, not lawful good. Seriously though, my griping aside, if you enjoyed that, you wont be disappointed by the next several books in the series. Maybe spend the summer with them when theres no MLP.URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174920#p1

Unfortunately, thus far, it isnt going well. Do you have any idea how hard it is to come up with 3 challenges the good magician could give a group of ponies? But Im having fun, even if nothing comes of it, and thats the important part. So thanks for that!URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174920#p174920

Sorry, based on the problems I had with Citadel all weekend, I am clearly not blessed by the email God. But my advice would be to ask on superuser.com; if it can be done, someone there will know.URL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174921#p174921
