Hmm, I've always started X with xinit and it works fine for me. This was a fresh install of Arch and I know Mate was running because I could hit CTRL+Alt+Del and space to shut down; Orca just wouldn't start. Suppose I could've figured out the problem but I really didn't feel like it haha.

Seems to be just one dev working on Orca right now, along with another one on speech-dispatcher which might as well be a part of it. Not sure about brltty or at-spi. I believe the situation is the same for GTK+ though I'm not positive (just heard somewhere that there is only one full-time dev) so this isn't limited to just the accessibility stuff.Edit: Who am I kidding...I'm bored with a lot of time on my hands and have a spare desktop.

Re: 1 thing holding me back from switching to Linux.

Yeah, the Linux accessibility stack is a huge mess, on top of the audio stack which is another mess. I've tried and tried to be happy with Linux but just can't because of all the little workarounds I have to do to even approach the level of efficiency I have on Windows. Orca doesn't have an object review system and is a little too verbose for my liking (though I'm kind of nitpicking with that one), speech-dispatcher is buggy (I ended up having to have a script to kill it on my desktop), a lot of stuff isn't accessible as previously mentioned, etc. To demonstrate just go to the front page of Reddit and read the list of subreddits at the top. Orca will choke. Try to upvote something and you can't click the button without using Orca's list (time you could be actually reading). Of course Reddit isn't the most productive site, but it makes for a good demonstration. If I had a paying job that required me to use my personal device and I couldn'
;t complete some task because pulseaudio or speech-dispatcher or whatever else refused to work for whatever dumb reason that would take hours to figure out, I doubt my employer would be too happy.Don't get me wrong, I think Linux is great in principal, but for day to day use I need shit to work. Windows is an ugly bloated mess, but it's an accessible one.

Re: question about NVDA remote, why is it insecure?

Most encryption algorithms in common use today are actually public knowledge; knowing how the algorithm works is generally not enough to defeat it unless the user's password or key is weak. So encryption with a well-tested algorithm would theoretically fix the problem if strong passwords are used.

Either run it from the Windows console like this:py Or use the interactive prompt, which you can either access from the start menu, or, as of python 3.something, just type "python" from anywhere in a console window. Personally I think IDEs are kind of overrated, especially if you're new to coding; it's better to get some knowledge of the command line up front as it can potentially give you a lot more control and make your life easier.

[[wow]]. I haven't had anywhere near the amount of issues you're describing. I don't generally need to install a lot of new apps regularly so that might be part of it. NVDA does everything I need it to, and it loads very quickly. I've never needed to use a registry cleaner (again, I don't do a lot of installing/uninstalling) so CCleaner works fine. But all that aside my condolences, that sounds like a nightmare. Just remember, no corporation truly respects you; it's just about making as much of a profit as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Re: where have the jobs gone?

Granted, and again as I said I did not intend to come across as rude or condescending; I certainly didn't mean to imply that it was his fault and the reason he doesn't have a job. I have, however, over the course of about six years, consistently observed this kind of writing from Josh in almost every post of his I've seen, both on this forum and other email lists we participate in. I simply wished to make him aware that the things I pointed out in post 6 make his writing look unprofessional, and that to me, again going on only my observations as I stated, it would seem to indicate a general lack of attention to detail in that regard. While your (and my and everyone else's) writing contains errors on occasion, I do not observe this same thing in most of the text I see on a regular basis and that is why I wanted to bring it to his attention. It seems like the people in this topic didn't much care for that first post I made, so for that I apologize. I'll

Re: where have the jobs gone?

As I said I was just going by my observations of the OP's writing. I will point out however that it takes no time at all to capitalize the beginnings of sentences, and I'd hardly call that anything close to APA standards, I'm not sure where that comparison is coming from. The use of proper punctuation is generally taught to a person as they begin to write and should, IMHO, be second-nature. It seems to me like you'd have to make a deliberate effort not to capitalize I.

Re: where have the jobs gone?

First off, and I'm not trying to sound like a douche here, but your writing is not what I would consider professional quality. Before I go any further I'll say that I may be completely wrong about this and for whatever reason you may choose to write this way on this forum, but from what I've seen of your posts to this board and email lists we're both subscribed to in the past six years it looks like you write like this pretty consistently. If that's not the case feel free to skip past this block of text. The thing that stands out to me the most is your lack of capitalization; you're not capitalizing I (this is very obvious if you're using Eloquence) or proper names. If you look at my last sentence you will see that Eloquence is capitalized, as it should be. Similarly: Braille, Arch, Linux, Spanish, Windows Server. All of these are names of things you've used in your previous posts to this topic, thus they should be capitalized. I'
ve also noticed you're sometimes not capitalizing the beginnings of your sentences and not ending them correctly, neither do you put commas where they should be. For example, in post 1 you write:"so what do you all think do you think there were more jobs back in the 1980s and before perhaps even into the 1990s yet"?Which should actually look more like this:"so what do you all think? Do you think there were more jobs back in the 1980s and before, perhaps even into the 1990s"?Look at and listen to that sentence, and make note of the changes I've made:1. "So what do you all think"? becomes its own sentence; I capitalized the first word and added a question mark. Having two sentences run together like this looks (and sounds) very unprofessional.2. A comma is added to the end of "before", indicating a pause. Your synth should reflect this now by correctly inflecting the question.3. Get rid of
the "yet", no idea what that was for.Pay attention to your synthesizer. Familiarize yourself with the way it speaks and how it reacts to punctuation. Examine the writing you see online every day. You should start to notice what is correct and what is not. I say all this not to try and sound superior (if I do please accept my apologies, improper punctuation and grammar are  pet peeves of mine) but because your style of writing is extremely unprofessional. If I were looking at the applications of prospective IT people to hire, I would immediately reject one that was written this way. This isn't just a consideration for visual readers either; using Eloquence I could immediately detect most of the problems with your writing without having to go back and look, excluding the lack of capitalization at the beginnings of sentences of course, and I have been blind from birth. Good writing is a skill everyone should have, and it becomes increasingly important with hi

Just don't write like this, it looks lazy and unprofessional.Second, colleges, as far as I am aware, are legally required to provide you with accessible materials. You must talk to someone in their disability services office in person and advocate for yourself (god I sound like such a cliche, but it's true), letting them know you need electronic books. If they cannot or will not provide such materials, find a different college. Department of Services for the Blind (that's the name of an organization, so it's capitalized) should pay most or all college tuition provided you've applied for financial aid and your GPA is above a minimum. This is something you should take advantage of.Lastly, don't just spend all day playing audio games and watching TV. The Internet is amazing, and just h

It's an unprecedented achievement in human history and not something to be taken for granted. Don't stick to blind communities either. If you don't feel like learning a programming language or something else that requires a lot of focus at the moment, read. Yeah, bugs like this are also part of the reason I don't use OS X regularly. I don't know what it is exactly but it seems like even with all the bullshit MS has been cramming into Windows the screen reader experience is still much, much smoother. Or maybe I just lack patience.

Well yeah if you've got any tips to reduce latency I'd appreciate it (already disabled the sounds of course) but I guess I just value sheer speed and smoothness more. I also really don't like having to step through every element on the screen to get where I want to go when exploring; it seems like I have to focus more on where things are rather than getting things done. And sometimes focus isn't where I expect it do be when using quicknav, I'm assuming that's a bug in Voiceover. But sure if you want to send them I'll see if it works any better.

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

I have all that set up, it just seems that no matter what I do VO is way too verbose and not as responsive as NVDA is under Windows. There are tiny delays when using quick keys or trackpad gestures that annoy me to no end, and Voiceover navigation just seems inefficient to me; I know it's supposed to be faster as you can skip past elements like toolbars you don't want to examine by not interacting with them and it's nice in theory, but it just doesn't do enough for me in practice. And Safari is far from the only app I have issues with. Dito with Chromevox, it's just way, way too inefficient for me. Like I said I really want to like OS X, I really do. It's fast, it's Unix-based, it's optomized for my hardware, it has system-wide spell checking and dictation, and so much more awesomeness...but I just can't deal with Voiceover as a primary screen reader. Maybe if there was a native Eloquence port for OS X there wouldn't be responsiven
ess issues, but that's obviously never happening. Plus Firefox has some add-ons I really like, so one more reason I don't want to switch to Safari.

I really want to like OS X and I think I've given it a fair chance but I just can't. There are little delays when using quick navigation keys in Safari that just aren't there on Windows, and I really don't like the way you're forced to navigate element by element. I'll boot to OS X if I'm on battery and want to play a lot of media or something as the battery life is a bit better than Windows, but there are too many issues that keep me from adopting it as my primary system.

I'm guessing that unless there are fundamental changes to the X86 archetecture with those processors older versions of Windows will still run on them, they just won't be able to take advantage of features like virtualization, power management and encryption. So more of a concern if it's a laptop.

You might find it worthwhile to upgrade that laptop to at least 8.1 if you don't like 10; it's actually a bit faster than 7 and automatically cleans old components when they are superseded by updates, so Windows (theoretically) won't get bigger and bigger over time as 7 does.

Re: Another screen reader flame war? Seriously?

So, just figured I should say something. The post being referred to here, and which apparently resulted in the creation of this thread was mine, and I apologize for the considerable offense it seems to have caused. As has been said it contributed in no way to the topic and may have been construed as rude. I'm not going to say much because what I would've had to say has pretty much been summed up nicely in posts 6 and 8. I merely meant the post as a jab at a piece of software which I have to use on occasion and which I have issues with. It was in no way intended as a personal attack, and I sincerely apologize if my admittedly not very constructive criticism of this software came across that way to you. I had no intention of causing a "flame war" (in quotes) and I frankly think it's a little ridiculous how seriously Internet comments are sometimes taken, creating terms like this. I made the post on impulse, fully expecting it to be ignored because as I said
it was meant as nothing more than a little jab. Ironically, this thread, concerning that little post, is now nearly as big, if not bigger, than the discussion that was deleted. Peace.

Yeah about the job thing, I just feel like a leach on the world for not having one, because I really don't contribute anything useful besides. I'm not a creative writer, have never bothered to learn much programming, or anything else really. I was raised conservative and even though I don't have the beliefs of my parents, I guess the "you don't work, you don't eat" philosophy is just a little too ingrained in my head, and the shame of not doing anything is too much. Plus I intensely hate apathy so kind of have to be doing something, even if it's only two college classes. And speaking of college I didn't get that paper done, so I'm all but done, just have to wait for it to be official. So in addition to everything else I've now set my agency back a little over $2000.Unfortunately, MR. Generic Joe Average seems to be the societal ideal for a lot of people, and while he may not think much, he's at least blissfully happ
y or just numb; I'm neither. The fact is society just doesn't like quiet, introspective people who don't have much ambition and don't do things the normal way. I wonder if my so-called intelligence, which has only resulted in me seeing the world for how it truly is, is some form of natural selection, I.E. I have two physical defects which are evolutionarily undesirable and cause me to be slower at almost everything, so if I just naturally come to the conclusion that it isn't worth it there's infinitesimally less resource drain in the world. My world has pretty much become my music, and I only feel truly happy when taking in the amazing beauty of some piece.I'm really happy that you've found someone, and I understand that there's a slight possibility it could happen to me, but it's not likely. I attended a university class this summer and it was literally the best month of my life as I had friends I could do things with and so o
n, but since then I haven't talked to many of them. Everyone said it would get better in college when I was in high school, and look where I am now! I'm tired of distracting myself hoping something will change, either randomly or by my own doing, for the better. Books, music, audio dramas and the occasional conversations with friends just aren't enough anymore, so yeah, I guess I've basically given up.

Haha, this is definitely a thing, though I think blaming the system is actually justified; we live in a system that's horribly broken and rigged for the most extraverted, ambitious and rich people. You can't go to college without either working your ass off (usually only community college at that) or taking on huge lones or if you're blind go through an agency, but yeah. It's really not our fault we were born into this. And any time you try to talk about it, the standard response is "the system is fine, you're! broken. Now pull yourself up by your bootstraps, lift some weights and get shit done!" Ridiculous. I've had enough of this bullshit.

Re: Monthly chat March 2016

Life is quite sucky at the moment. I'm currently (very unenthusiastically) working on a research paper that is due midnight; if I don't get it in I fail my psychology class, and I really could care less. I am so, so tired of being blind and that three quarters of what I do is just trying to make up for that. I signed up for a music 100 class next quarter and it's going to be pretty challenging because they use the visual staff and whiteboards and stuff, not to mention the route across campus to the building it's in is ridiculous. I doubt it's going to be an issue though as my state blind agency didn't get my tuition in in time and I don't care enough to talk to them about it, and also feel like shit for not being able to pay it on my own because of the shame that goes along with not having a job in this culture. I'm sick of the unending stream of bullshit that is constantly thrown my way and don't really see any point in dealing with it
anymore. I guess I may have finally sort of found a direction for my life with teaching because I hope I can maybe instill a passion for good music and literature into people in a school system that just wants worker drones, but haven't started studying for it yet and the accommodations that would have to be made if I were to eventually teach in a normal classroom would be ridiculous and not at all cost-effective. I've come to the conclusion that any contribution I might make to the world is going to be outweighed by all the adaptive things I require, plus none of it really matters anyway. I hate, hate hate being blind. Sometimes I just want to scream and break something when I get lost somewhere for the umpteenth time, but what good would that do? I am, at least according to society, an adult now, and do my best to act like one. People tell me I just need to try new things or put myself out there more, (these are well-liked, happy people with good support networks) but I
have and it hasn't worked. All I want is the ability to be a little spontaneous and go for a run or relaxing walk without having to carry around a cane and be thinking about landmarks and sidewalks and shit. I can't really leave the house when I want to because I still don't know any routes around here. Fuck this noise. I live with my mom and brother who usually has his douche of a friend over here. They are so loud it's unbelievable. We went out to eat the other day and by the time we got back home I had almost completely lost my temper and could've started breaking stuff. This kid just got arrested the other week and still it's like everyone loves him. My sister, who is two months older than me and not in the least fit to be a parent, had herself a kid a few months ago (I suspect mainly for the attention) is now staying at home and gets praise wherever she goes because baybeee! Meanwhile I'm not been able to make a single new con
nection in college and am bored senseless with it. I don't really have many likeminded people to talk with except for a friend on Skype; my beliefs have become increasingly nihilistic and whenever I talk to anyone about it they usually attribute it to my being "depressed", even though it really makes sense to me. Almost everyone around here is religious, which I personally find irrational, and it makes me sad. I feel I pretty much understand religion; it's basically a psychological coping mechanism people use for comfort, that or an ego boost which can come with believing you have a deity on your side who will eventually make things work out and designed everything in life to happen for a reason. I don't mean to offend anyone, it's just how I feel. I'm sick of not being taken seriously, tired of feeling useless, and just generally feel like shit. For whatever reason I'm also almost constantly tired now which doesn't help my reputation. I
really don't think I'll be sticking around much longer if you catch my drift. Not to mention my hearing loss which stresses me out too. I was talking to someone about it a few months ago and they told me I should (paraphrasing) stop being so negative about it...after all they work with older mentally ill people in a spam facility and a lot of them have hearing loss, and they're doing greeat! Bitch please, I'm not even 20.Anyway I'm really sorry for even more negativity. This is a pretty nice community and I wish you all well, whatever that's worth. Wonder if I'll manage to complete this paper and not fail out of college...guess I'll know in a few hours.

Same about Windows CE; this Braille Sense is just functional enough that I can take notes, chat on Facebook and stuff like that. I currently have an Android phone (a fact I hope to change once the iPhone SE is released) so using that for Braille isn't really an option. It technically works, but is so slow and complicated it's just not worth it.I actually really enjoy audiobooks with good content and narration; I feel like it goes from being just a book to a performance. Not that I wouldn't read a Braille book if I didn't get the opportunity.I haven't bothered to learn much about UEB yet and now I'm very disheartened. Also I suck at Nemeth and math in general.

Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

NVDA didn't come from a huge company; it started when a dude got fed up with commercial screen readers. It is now almost 10 years old and going strong. Yes it has had funding from companies, but it is still a free and open-source product, and now outdoes commercial screen readers in a lot of areas, making it more than sufficient for an average blind computer user. I think something like this needs to happen with Braille; a big blind-specific company isn't going to be in any hurry to innovate because the current status quo is immensely profitable for them. On the other hand, Apple did introduce VoiceOver on their own, so I may be wrong. Knowing the reputations of companies like Freedom Scientific though I doubt it.

Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

The hardware and software of Braille notetakers is substandard and outdated beyond belief. This is true for every notetaker I've seen and heard about. For example, the Braille Sense U2 I have right now is $4000. Let's do some math here. Let's go with you're figure and say a 40-cell Braille display is $3000. This device has a 32-cell display, a CPU that runs at a GHZ, 256MB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. It runs Windows CE 6 which is no longer being actively developed, and crashes constantly. It uses mini-USB 2.0 and cannot connect to 5 GHZ Wi-Fi networks. To put that in perspective, the Raspberry Pi 3 that was just released is $40, has a 64-bit quad-core CPU running at 1.1 GHZ, bulit-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and can run Linux, Windows and probably some other stuff I'm not aware of. So even accounting for the small market and the Braille display, $4000 is absolutely unreasonable. This rule can be applied to basically and notetaker.

Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

@Dark I was referring to functional literacy being respected, which I believe in most cases for Blind people means having some grasp of Braille for spelling and such. Not saying it should be a primary source of reading, but as I think we can all agree it needs to be incorporated at the elementary level. I've seen far too many blind people spelling words just by how they sound to believe otherwise. Whether we should! be spelling words like that or in a way that makes more sense is another topic entirely.@TJT1234 that logic doesn't really fly when it comes to Braille displays; it's a simple concept, it's just that more research needs to be done. All other components of a Braille display (Bluetooth, USB port, battery, firmware chip etc) aren't worth more than $50.00 together. Plus I'm sure if a cheaper solution is developed the blindie companies will behave as they always have, by continuing to push what would then be a substandard product without
 innovating.

Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

I'm scared to think what will happen if/when Braille disappears. The mentality of a lot of people seems to be "well they're blind, what do you expect them to do?" and not having the literacy skills imparted by Braille won't help that image. I'm considering a career in teaching the visually impaired so that I can hopefully help at least a few, but I fear that will be a losing battle.Personally I can edit mostly fine with audio, though I tend to look at the spellings of words pretty often just by habit, and almost always when I find a word I think Eloquence is mispronouncing (I've used it for a long time so am pretty familiar with it's quirks, move to another synth though and it's all different).@Dark I have no idea how you managed math without Braille; I can do simple algebraic equations with audio but more than one line and I'm done, not to mention graphs and such.@Cae I thought about mentioning the Social Securit
y notices as well lol. I think I remember one of the options on the application being to have the document sent on a CD as a Word file. Amazing.

Exactly. Without Braille an individual blind from birth is functionally illiterate. I myself have a Braille display and use it every day for things like notetaking, chatting or reading parts of textbooks in class, but I don't really read for long stretches with it because of how tedious scrolling from line to line is. I've been thinking of picking up a Braille copy of Paradise Lost or something just to capture the feeling of a physical page under my fingers again. Wonder if it's worth it.

Browsers made for the blind are pretty much always knockoffs, Chrome and NVDA do not get along as stated in a previous post, and if you're still using something older than XP you've got bigger problems. Internet Explorer is no longer being developed, and is frankly the worst browser in terms of security and compatibility across different platforms, would not recommend using it at all.

Personally while I have access to it I've never cared for it, as a lot of the narrators of their older books before they started using the Audible versions are horrible. Plus if I'm reading a series, I want the next book right when it comes out; I'm not going to wait weeks or months for it to be up on BARD. All told, I'd much rather pay $15.00 or so for a book I can break the DRM on, and if I have the ability to do that there's no need for piracy. I certainly don't feel entitled to free books simply because I am blind.

Is there any way to navigate in Safari like you would with NVDA, I.E. multiple links being listed on the same line as opposed to having to navigate through all of them? I know you're supposed to be able to up and down arrow through web pages, but when I do that, especially on sites like Reddit VO seems to miss things and get stuck.2. It seems sometimes that the VO cursor and system cursor are in different places at once, making for some confusion when I'm tabbing and shift-tabbing. Any quick workaround for this, or am I doing something wrong?

This is why I don't download from Audible; I'll occasionally buy something from them because I actually do care about supporting the author, but being as my preferred portable device for playing books on is my Sansa Clip Zip with Rockbox on it, which, drum roll, cannot play DRM-protected content, I use a network that's made exclusively for uploading audiobooks as MP3s. Re: Before the Mini: Using an Aire To Prepare

I'm curious what you have the speech rate set to; I can only use Alex to read long passages that aren't system-related at about 50. You probably know this by now, but VO-D will get you to the dock (analogous to the Windows Taskbar) VO-M twice will bring up the status menus (like the system tray, kind of) and to get to all your applications do Command-N from the desktop, then use the sidebar to find the Applications folder. I'll be closely following this thread and contributing where I can, as I'm also playing around with OS X. Remember also keyboard help can be turned on with VO-K, and you can bring up a help menu at any time with VO-H, which has on-the fly command references and other handy stuff. As with iOS you can turn on Screen Curtain with a 3-finger tripple-tap on the trackpad (assuming trackpad commander is on, VO-rotate right to enable) or with VO-Shift-F11. You might want to go to system preferences and under keyboard turn on the option along the line
s of "Use function keys as standard keys"; maybe not on the Air depending on how you're wife likes it, but probably the Mini since you're coming from Windows.

For the past few months sometimes when I use H to jump headings the page will refresh, which either makes NVDA speak the title of the page and what I'm focused on again, or worse, puts me in the search field, so that H is appended to whatever I was searching for and the search is executed yet again. Don't recall exactly when this started, so can't be sure if it's a Firefox updage, one of my addons, NVDA or something else. It's annoying as hell though.

For the past few months sometimes when I use H to jump headings the page will refresh, which either makes NVDA speak the title of the page and what I'm focused on again, or worse, puts me in the search field, so that H is appended to whatever I was searching for and the search is executed yet again. Don't recall exactly when this started, so can't be sure if it's a Firefox updade, one of my addons, NVDA or something else. It's annoying as hell though.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

@Sebby not sure how much you screwed around with Fedora, but for some idiotic reason ALSA is muted by default, you might try something like "amixer set Master 100" in a terminal and see if that helps, though I don't think those pre-packaged distros come with the alsa-utils package. I've heard Linux audio can be problematic in Vmware though, might want to try booting it natively. If the machine you're booting on has multimedia volume keys you can simply press volume-up and you'll have audio (I don't think Xorg recognized the volume keys on Macbooks though .) Totally get you on not caring for Espeak, which is why I don't use Linux as much as I otherwise might; you can get an old version of Eloquence (or Viavoice, as it was known then) running but it involves a lot of obsolete 32-bit packages and is somewhat buggy. I also have the option of Braille but
it's just not worth it for me. Personally I don't care for Debian or any of the other preconfigured distros. Not sure what you're ideal setup is, but if you're like me (and have time to screw around with initial configuration) you'll probably love Arch and never want to go back. As they say, Arch is pure Linux with a nice package manager. The Cortana commitments thing feels more like an insult to peoples' intelligence than anything else, I guess MS is just trying to get people used to their OS holding their hand through everything. I admit I thought Cortana was cool for a while, and that it'd be really nice to be able to just ask my computer the time, weather or do a conversion from across the room or something, but it was just too much of a hassle to manage. Ah well.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

Yeah my experiences with Fedora in particular have not been too positive, so I'd suggest avoiding that one. As for Chrome OS, I had a Chromebook a while back and did not care for the TTS at all (seems to be a trend with me ) and ChromeVox seemed buggy and inefficient. I mean, on paper it looks good, but I found the navigation and presentation of information ridiculous, regardless of what settings I changed. Ended up giving it to a friend about a year ago, so I suppose things could've changed since then, but I doubt it, and definitely am not getting another Chromebook even if I could afford it. Have you ever got it working with sound on a non-Chromebook?

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

What do you do for TTS on Chromevox? Last I checked Chrome (or at least Chromium) didn't work with speech dispatcher and you had to install the Google TTS from Google Play, which is impossible without sight.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

@Sebby, got the Mac because I wanted to keep myoptions open, and didn't realize OS X would be this hard to get used to. I'm going to play with it when I feel like it and will definitely listen to the podcasts, but I'm really just not motivated right now to learn it; I think you're right about the familiarity thing but I can't really ditch Windows at this point, and Linux has its own problems. All that aside, I feel like the TTS alone is going to keep me from being as fast as I am on Windows, and like I said I value speed. Also talking of Linux it sounds like you haven't installed from a live CD in a long time, forgive me if I'm wrong here. I've used quite a few live CDs on some pretty weird hardware and have rarely had a problem; the Talking Arch CD in particularly is very good with hardware detection, if that's your distro of choice, and it's a network install.I haven't had issues installing Windows independently for a
long time now, except sometimes on drives that are already partitioned for something else. You can use the command prompt to manage partitions and use keyboard shortcuts for the installation screens. Getting them to boot from disk is another issue entirely, but that's not really MS's fault. I agree that there's no excuse not to provide a talking installer, but I guess I personally just don't really need one.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

Well I've been using OS X today and web navigation especially seems really inefficient compared to what I'm used to. Unless I'm missing something, just to get into the off-topic room on this forum I have to interact with the heading and scroll to it. VO is way too verbose and I have to scroll multiple times just to hear web addresses and other objects read in their entirety, something I don't need to do on Windows. I can't understand Alex well at high speeds and the breathing is really annoying, plus he sounds depressed and uptight which doesn't help my mood, I feel like he's gonna tap me on the shoulder and say brusquely, "Name, you are fired." So I'm sad to say I've reinstalled 8.1; I'm in college and have stuff to do and speed is a high priority for me. I'll play with OS X and when I get more familiar with it may try to make a slower switch over a break, but for now it's back to Doze. Sorry guys, couldn'
 t do it.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

@Sebby I may well invest in Fusion; trivial as it may sound Eloquence is a pretty big selling point for me. Until then though I'll probably just install Player and virtualize on Arch.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

@Sebby not meaning to get any more off-topic but being as I've actually got a fairly powerful Macbook Pro (2013, Sandybridge at 2.4 ghz, 8 GB of RAM and 250 GB SSD,) I'm now seriously considering getting rid of Windows and dual-booting with Arch and have a few more OS X-related questions. I know the basics of VO gestures and the interface, but am still kind of slow and clumsy. Of the several intro podcasts out there is there one you recommend? For a browser I've heard Chrome is snappier than Safari, and mixed things about Firefox, any input on this? While we're at it a good torrent client and media player, I'm going to try out VLC as I've heard it's pretty good but have no idea about the other. Also I never tried the Eloquence server emulated with WINE hack, have you done so and is it worth it? Espeak doesn't seem to work with Voiceover either, and I'm really not a fan of the resource-intensive Apple voices. I know it's kind of irr
elevant on a quad-core machine, but I still like running efficiently. One reason I've stuck with Windows for so long is despite its complexity I do have some understanding of its architecture (boot process, location of kernel and other system files, update method, startup services and so forth.) Do you know of any good comprehensive resources about this? Sorry most of these questions are kind of open-ended, I'm lazy and will undoubtedly find answers on my own in time, don't answer if you don't feel like it lol.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

I guess the only other question I have for now is how is VO with QT applications like Virtualbox? That and what to do with my other non-Macs (two desktops, one laptop.) I briefly entertained the idea of trying to hackintosh them a while back, but that looks like way more trouble than it's worth. Guess it's back to 8.1 for them all, hopefully those will be the last reinstalls of Windows I have to do for a long time.Edit: I don't think I'll be using iTunes because almost everything I have is in FLAC, and there's a lot of it.
