Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

I was thinking more about the customization factor myself. While less lag is definitely a consideration, what I like about having screen reader support is that I can adjust the voice depending on what game or application I'm using. I'm surprised that no one else brought it up, it was the first thing that popped into my head upon opening this topic.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

Huh, I would have thought better customizability would have been more of a driving factor for screen readers, but its rather interesting that speed and response time issues with SAPI are an issue. Thanks everyone for taking the time to share your insights, i'll also take a deeper look into the Tolk library.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

detect if a screen reader is running, if so, use it, if not use Sapi. I'd much rather use my screen reader, instant, no lag, etc.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

for me it depends on the OS. for windows, it's screen reader for performance reasons. for mac, it's built in tts.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

I agree with aaaon about Tolk being good, though I have noticed windows 10 sapi can be more laggy than previously, especially when typing.I agree with Aaron o tolk being the best option.I know how much the sapi lag in windows 10 is program or  specific, since while I did notice it with narrator, equally I noticed it with nvda as well, where as something like kitchinsinc seemed okay using a 32 bit voice. I suspect it's a little of both. either way it's still true that sapi is the best free option for those who don't have a screen reader or who use one of the less common screen readers, hence why it's always better to have best of both worlds if possible.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

I'd prefer something like tolk, as it'll support both screen readers and sapi. Where possible, I use screen reader support because it just seems quicker. Some of my sapi voices lag a bit.

Screen reader support. You could have both though with something like Tolk.

Re: Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

Hi, I think a Screen reader that comes with a TTS built-in is a better alternative for the user. The reason is because, from the very first days I have used Windows, I have noticed a slowness of built-in windows TTS, but even the comercial TTS applications I've used with Sapi 5 have been really slower than ESpeak or Eloquence in NVDA and JAWS, respectively. Sapi 5 used to be very stable in Windows 7 but after that, the sapi 5 became even slower in windows 8.1 and even now in Windows 10. So imagine doing a school project with a sapi 5 voice running. It would be a disaster since sometimes it takes 1 or more seconds to respond. I have tried Window-eyes which uses the sapi 5 as a main synthesiser, but it was really slower and more sluggish than either NVDA with ESpeak, or JAWS with eloquence. So, as I said in the beginning, A screen reader with a native synthesiser is the best alternative so far, at least on Windows.

Question about TTS and Screen Reader preferences

If given the choice between built in TTS or screen reader compatibility for a program, which would be more preferable? I would assume that having the option of built in TTS would be nice if a screen reader is not enabled or the program isn't fully compatible with a given screen reader, but am still curious about peoples preferences on the matter.
