Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

I also don't bother to use AppleVis for app reviews because I find they are frequently biased towards the view that anything from Apple is great, and anything that runs on anything from Apple is good. So I look to other sources not focused entirely on the world of Apple for hardware and software reviews.Unfortunately about the only thing I might be able to help you with is blocking spam calls. What I did was add a couple of ring tones to my phone, then edited each of my contacts, assigning to them one of the two ring tones, one is for family and friends, and the other is for businesses I deal with. When somebody calls, if they are in my contact list, the family or business ring tone will play, if they are not in my contact list, the default ring tone will play, and those I ignore. If it isn't a spam call, they will usually leave a voice mail, so I can call them back, and add the number to my contact list for next time. While it doesn't stop spam calls from ri
nging your phone, it does give you an indication of whether you should pick up or not, and other than any ring tones you might buy, it's free.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Success! I can open a brf book in the Bard app. I had no idea that Dropbox even had that option, since it's pretty buried and it took me awhile to find it. As for this panning option, I should actually see if that's activated, because maybe that was the issue I was having with Voice Dream. I would hate to have wasted money on that, and, anyway, it's not the app's fault that I didn't realize it didn't have Braille display support. Or maybe it does, if this panning thing makes a difference. Either way, Bard should work well for me.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Hi there, here's my responses in no particular order.Kindle is completely proprietary and can only open kindle formatted books. As for iBooks, it does have its own store that has books with DRM, but it can also open any .Epub or PDF books without DRM which is how I used to read before I seriously got into Voice Dream. Haven't done much reading with braille but from what I know iBooks works pretty well with a braille display, as long as you have the "turn pages while panning" switch on in VoiceOver's settings.Audio cables, you have 2 solutions, the paid, 3rd party app is called audiobus, while Apple has their own version of this called inter-app audio. I think more apps support audiobus (including apple's own garage band), but it's been a while since I looked at apps that use them. In any case, this won't actually let you record an app review as these apps don't record system audio, only things fed into them from other apps
(like audio from a software instrument for example). You can of course record reviews with headphones unplugged so that the microphone picks up the iPhone speaker's audio, but this will only be in mono and you won't be able to review apps that take over the audio. Finally, any apps that claim they can record stereo can only do this with external hardware as even though the iPhone has multiple microphones, it can only record out of 1 of them at a time in iOS.

Ok, thanks. If I convert the brf files I have to text, then to docx, that's an extra step, but I suppose it can be done. I wish it was an easier process, but if I actually want to get back into reading, I suppose I'll have to deal with it.

Hi Turtlepower, you could import a file to the application you need by going to dropbox and seeing for more action. In my dropbox, there is an option to copy to iBooks, and the book you copied is shown there. You can access it. The same goes for Notes, you can copy a file to Notes (docs prefered) and you can access it. There should be an option for the application you're looking for as well.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Here are my suggestions:1. There is Capti Narrator, but I am not sure if that would be what you need--I have never had reason to use it.2. I am not quite sure about what you are wanting, but if it is a password vault, you may like 1Password or LastPass.3. Again, I am not quite sure what you require. Will Voice Memos not do what you would like? There are quite a few other alternatives; on the free side there is Dropvox and Ferrite.4. The best ad blocker (and again, it is free) from what I have heard is Purify. You cannot stop ads from disappearing in apps, but to limit what the ads can show, go into Settings > Privacy > iAds. I did say that you can't remove them from being shown in apps, but you can limit them by removing your connection to the Internet.5. I can't really suggest anything here.6. I can't help much here, but I do know of a general trivia game that is currently in beta, so I will let you know about that wh
 en it is released.

Where would I go to import a book in the Bard app? I see a bunch of options to search for books that are on the Bard website, but I don't see an import option like you described. Also, I've just now bought Ad Guard Pro, and am trying to enable the DNS option so that it will block ads in apps. It doesn't seem to want to do it for some reason. Each time I click on the DNS button, it kicks me out of the app and drops me back onto my home screen. When I go back into the app, the DNS still says it's not connected. I've already tried closing all apps in the app switcher, thinking that maybe it needed everything to be shut down in order to work its magic. Upon reading a couple of their poorly written blog posts, I got the impression that it had something to do with VPN, so I enabled that in settings, still no go. I then restarted my phone, and it's still not working. What am I missing?

I think that price has to do with licensing for the two Acapela voices that are included. These voices are no longer necessary ImHO since programs have been able to use the default iOS Vocalizer engine since iOS 7. This is why I vastly prefer VoiceDream Reader. It was well worth the $10 and includes all the iOS voices as well as ones from Acapela, Ivona, and Neo Speech.

Hello,You could try the official Read to go app for Bookshare. however, it will cost $20 which is ridiculous! Aside from that, I think the Bard app can display BRF files. However, I don't know if you can import files from other sources besides NLS. I'm assuming open in should allow you to import the BRF files you get from Bookshare. Since I prefer listening to books in audio or with TTS, I can't help all that much. I'm sorry.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Hi,Thank you all for the suggestions. As far as reading goes, I think I was unclear in what I need. I download books from Bookshare, usually in .brf format, but I could switch to the daisy text option if this would be supported better. I can use Wintrans to convert brf files to text, so I don't necessarily need an app that can handle brf files, but I do need something that's going to load large text files and allow me to read them using a Braille display. I thought IBooks only allowed you to use a proprietary format, but if I'm wrong about that, please correct me. Same with Kindall, I thought that was specifically for reading books purchased from Amazon. So, would Notes or Pages serve this same purpose? And would the books be stored on my phone, or could I use Dropbox to access them? Or, as I said, if there's an app that will work well with Daisy text, I can also start obtaining my Bookshare books that way.I kind of had a feeling that an aud
io repeater wouldn't be available for IOS, but I figured it was worth a shot anyway. The patch cable option is easy and cheap enough to implement, it's just out of simple laziness that I haven't done so yet, since I don't have one. I'm happy to hear that I have several ad blocking options to try out. I don't mind an occasional nag that I'm using one, and I have no sympathy for advertisers, either. There are some apps whose screens are so cluttered with ads that I just end up uninstalling the app no matter how good it is. Just to be clear, having more than one ad blocker installed doesn't cause any conflicts, right?I'll definitely check out Rock On, that's going to be the next thing I do after I finish writing this post. I already have both Trivia Crack and Kingdoms, but I was looking for something single player.Thank
s again for all your helpful responses.

I can't help with many of these things since I personally prefer reading audiobooks and use my good ol' noggin to store my passwords :d. For trivia games though, see This topic for several recommendations. I have personally played trivia crack quite a bit and even have the full version, however just at the point I was giving it a db entry the game got this really weerd collectable cards system and a tutorial which is impossible to actually complete (albeit that the tutorial doesn't really matter and you can just play the game). Still, you can pretty much ignore the cards since the actual trivia game is very much there and includes trivia questions on many subjects, music included. the same developers also do a game called trivia kingdoms mentioned in that topic, which is more specific and probably has a music trivia category of it's own. hth.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Hello turtlepower, For reading books with a Braille Display, I think iBooks should do the job. Either way, Adobe reader is the equivalent of iBooks which is also Voiceover-friendly since the pages, while reading continuously, are switched automatically, and that makes reading pleasant with voiceover (always, not using Alex). A good news is that you can copy PDF books from dropbox/mega/google drive to iBooks or integrate Adobe reader to these apps and use it to read the books you love. If the books are in .docks format, you can also copy them to notes which I think is a great program to read documents and books and notes.About the virtual cable, I don't know so much of it, but I think there should be some, or you could buy a stereo microphone and get a great quality recording. There are actually some paid audio recorders on the Appstore which support stereo recording since the iPhone has 2 or 3 microphones, and I am surprised why Apple hasn't still implemented
stereo recording, either on the camera app, or on the voice memos.About the Add blockers: they have already been introduced, but you have here a program which can unmask "No caller ID numbers", called Trapcall. It is paid, but it should do the job.http://www.trapcall.com/blog/no-caller-id/I hope this helps.

Re: Some IOS app recommendations needed.

FOr blocking advertisements, try ad guard and Focus. There is also Adblock. I have all three installed and active and it is very nice. The only thing that irritates me are the banners that come up telling me to disable my blockers. I don't feel a shred of sympathy for advertisers. As far as I'm aware, the audio system on iOS isn't nearly advanced enough for an audio routing application. If Apple continues to insist that iOS be so locked down, I fear that it will never become a seriously productive and useful operating system. Your best bet is to connect your phone to your computer with a patch cable and record using a dedicated program. If you want to read books using braille, try Kindle or Apple iBooks.

Some IOS app recommendations needed.

Hi all,So, I'm going to be saying a lot in this message, going all over the map, really. I know that Applevis is a great resource for this kind of information, but I find their forums to be seriously cluttered and unintuitive, and their app directory too overwhelming at times to narrow down a specific app. So I'm coming to you guys for help. Sorry for the lengthy and random post.I would like people's thoughts on the following items:1. What app or apps can be used for reading books using a Braille display? I bought Voice Dream Reader, thinking that it would have support for this, but I'm finding that it wasn't really meant for that use case. Whenever I pan the display for a couple of lines within a document, I'm presented with a blank line, then I need to route the cursor back into the app. I'm using a Focus 40 Blue, if that makes a difference, but I'm thinking I should have done more research and that Voice Dream Reader d
oesn't have Braille display support. Either way, I need a way to read books on my phone, as it's the only way I can do so at this point.2. Has anyone used any of the forks of KeePass for the IPhone? I'm aware that there is no official KeePass app, so I tried a few of its IOS clones, and they didn't impress me. There was one that only allowed me to view my vault once, then expected me to make in-app purchases in order to continue using it. I can't remember its name. there was also Mini KeePass, which wasn't all that accessible. Finally, there was KeePass Touch, which looked relatively good, although ad-supported, until I realized that I couldn't figure out how to copy a password to the clipboard. As someone who uses long, complex passwords, this feature is essential for me. Also, I've tried 1Password, and in fact I still have that installed on my phone. But the free trial on the Windows side of things only allows you to input a certain n
umber of entries, and I don't feel that I should have to pay for a password manager. That's stupid, considering that you can add as many entries as you want within the IOS app for free. So, does anyone know of any password managers that can interface either with keePass's vault format, or a clone that works reasonably well with Voiceover? I am most familiar and comfortable with KeePass, but would consider switching as long as I don't have to go through a tedious process of reentering all my info.3. is there any application for the IPhone that's similar to Virtual Audio Cable on Windows? It would be great to have such a thing, since I'll be using my IPhone to record audio demos of apps soon.4. Are there any reliable ad blockers which can be used to not only block ads in Safari, but within apps as well? Although I've been told not to worry, that accidental ad clicks don't flood your phone with malware the way the same action would
on Windows, I'm so conditioned to believe that ads = bad that I have a hard time dealing with screens in which I feel one wrong move could expose my credit card and fingerprint info to a criminal.5. Along sort of the same lines, since IOS 10 was released, I've been hearing about apps which are supposed to help you filter out spam phone calls. Since these apps are not free, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, and could offer a solid recommendation as far as accessibility is concerned? I find that when I don't use my phone often, the calls from unknown numbers flood in, sometimes 3 or 4 of them per day. At the same time, I mostly use services like Skype and Whatsapp to make calls these days, which is why my actual phone service gets neglected. But I'd still like to get rid of the junk phone calls if I can.6. Finally, can anyone recommend any good, accessible music trivia games? I don't mind paying for one, but I'd lik
e to be sure it would be accessible before I invest any money in something that isn't accessible.
