I do believe you have houses in avalon, but I never quite got far enough with the game owing to other things going on, indeed  never really got that far after the newbie bit and the junior quests, the community is very nice though so feel free to ask any questions you like.

I didn't get chance to experience much of avalon combat, but it mostly seemed a matter of balance and attacks, like each attack you did altered your balance and you needed to regain it before attacking again, very different from the auto combat most games have.

Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

Everytime I see a post lamenting the lack of soundpacks in games, I want to tell the kids of today to get off of my lawn. Then I want to follow up with 'back in my day, we had telnet, with no local echo so you couldn't see what you were typing. And you know what?  We liked it even as we walked to school up hill both ways through the snow!'  Haha, I had to come kicking and screaming to the idea of soundpacks.  They are indeed like the dessert after a delicious main course.  Great if they are there, but for me, not the end all be all of a game.  Once upon a time, there were no such thing as soundpacks.  Haha. Thanks for the link for Harshlands.  I enjoy RPI muds like this.

Agreed mektastic, particularly sinse up until the six dragons pack, those who just wanted sounds and couldn't cope without basically just had alter, which is a great game but certainly not all that is out there.Clok combat I like,  however I'm afraid I didn't rate the combat in cyber assault, I found it rather spammy, then again I didn't overly like the writing or atmosphere of the game either so it's possible I'd have  persisted a little more otherwise. Avalon seemd to have nice combat, albeit I didn't get to try much of it, I still want to get back to six dragons and try some more advanced stuff.

Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

Hi Marta. Any mud that has too much text to be played by a blind person without! using sounds needs some accerss fixes.  This was one of my problems with cyber assault, sinse I don't want to have to redesign my interface each time I play I just want to get into the game. Good muds however aren't too bad with this. Six dragons has wonderfully none spammy combat, as does wayfare1444 and Clok, and what I saw of Avalon, although six dragons is the best. Epitaff seemed one of the worst for this though I did hear that got fixed. Some games also just don't have the combat to worry about such as Frandom. As I saidk, there are lots of good muds without sounds and I'd personally not miss a game just because it was fext, albeit sounds are of course nice to have when possible.

Good thing that now I can code the lua ppi myself. I don't have to care about muds with no sound anymore. But now except Clok and Alter, I'm quite off for muds. Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

I must confess I disagree about sounds in muds. Sounds in muds to me aren't like tasty food with no flavour, they're like when you buy a main course in a restaurant and get a dessert for free. Awesome if they're there, nice to have and very enjoyable, but  not essential to your enjoyment of the thing itself or something you should expect. Indeed, there are far more good muds without sounds than with them (I've never actually played Clok with sounds). Speaking of which, I noticed a new mud mentioned in the whitestickc.o.uk site of games to play online. It's called the harshlands, and seems a very rp intensive game, though I haven't had much  chance even to read the help files. Either way, website is here if you want a look, albeit I doubt very much if it has sounds. Glad you  like six dragons, I might be back on there myself at some point if I can.

I don't really get the jaws avalon thing though, sinse it never seemd overly spammy to me, maybe ask on the avalon forum sinse I know there are some other high ranking vi players who use Jaws. In the mean time hope you like six dragons. My character is an angel called lyradel say hi if I'm on there, though currently as I said I'm a little otherwise occupied.

Hmm, I'd probably give 6th dragon a go. Just got the soundpack yesterday and it sounds quite nice. As for avalon, I stopped playing it (despite the urge) because my stupid jaws spammed the crap out of me, and i couldn't follow the screen well enough because it kept repeating certain lines. I may give it a go another time, and really hope there's a soundpack for that. (for now i'm glad i have fully function clokpack with lots of customized stuff. Can't give it yet since most of my added triggers aren't scripted)

Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

@Marta, six dragons pack is an msp pack, it's not for mush or like the alter pack it's the same way sounds in materiamagica work, people have run it with mush and there is some help in the game on how. As I said it's not like the alteraeon pack, but there's definitely a lot of extra stuff to listen to. As to reward units, as I said, mm should be quite playable without, and nobody will think less of you. Avalon doesn't so much have paid and unpaid status as it is a paid game which you can play for free (as many people do), by being a frequent player and contributing to the experience. The payment thing has put some people off, but wen it says in the game the community is good and will freely accept players whether they pay a subscription or not it's not lying. If your interested I'd highly recommend avalon.

Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

Hi Marta. Odd you mention materiamagica as pay to win, while I never got that fa in the game I was always under the impression that reward units were mainly used for aesthetic things, not real character improvements such as restringing items or buying furniture for  your houses or the like, there were higher level players on the free game who never had problems. Ironrealms muds like lusternia or imperian I have heard are pay to win, but I haven't played those anyway. Avalon has a really unique system where if your an active player and work for your city/guild/church/organization, you will be given paid status anyway without having to pay a been to the game, though of course you can subscribe if you wish. It's actually a nice system for a subscription game and avalon has some rather unique features and probably the best writing I've seen in any mud, i just had to stop due to time constraints and my life being a bit topsy turvy at the second. <
p>Six dragons is a bit hack n slash though has good crafting and quests and a great soundpack (not like Alter's but certainly more sounds than in most muds), and wayfare1444 is hugely crafting based and has just had some nice updates, like ability to search the environment for new biomes. As to lament, I do love the idea of a game where you can learn by doing, and thus be free to try many different things rather than being a specific class and getting just locked into that class, however thus far I haven't really heard there is much goal based in the game, ie, missions or quests or whatever. Crafting sounds great, but I've only heard about the crafting so far. admitedly though as I said, my time for muds and gaming isn't much right now as I'm engaged on more important things, ie, the future mrs. dark.

I'm really liking lament.  It has a little something for everyone, and is some different from the muds I've tried before.  there is a rather extensive crafting system, skills that you learn by doing as opposed to trainers, creatures you could kill  if you wanted, but, if you don't, you don't have to.  you can gather, craft, do carpentry, blacksmithing, tailoring, leatherworking, hunting, fishing, there is a skill set that is mercenary based, and more.  I love that yu can literally learn any skill you wish just by trying it, and then working toward it.  The staff is realy amazing, and are very helpful.  they offer a wiki, *sorry if I misspelled that*  and there help files are quite extensive.  I think, there might be a better topic on the forum with more than what I have said here.

That's why I made this topic. May be there're some muds someone recently tried and is nice to check out. And not to say topics about muds in general game discussion are mostly drowned by new topics.I call Materiamagica a pay-to-win mud, mainly because it's rather limited to great character function without reward units, and there seems to be no way to obtain it normally. And for my problem, as i''ve always had, is I seriously can't pay despite the extreme urge to. It'd probably be nice if at least one could get a single ru per month or year. That's why I like credits on Alter more, and I would actually g

I've tried Materia magica (quite disappointing that it's pay-to-win type and i can't pay), Clok (my favorite so far), Epitaph (goodd enough. Too bad my university blocks the port), Hellmoo (dirty but fun), Cybar Assault (nice quests and contents, unique for a hack and slash mud). Is there anything more, anything interesting? Re: Any good muds out there? Anything more than just hack and slash?

Hi Marta. I'm not sure what you mean about materiamagica pay to win. I know there were paid items but I never heard they were that essential to the game. There have been several muds under discussion recently. 6 dragons is a bit hack n slash, but it has good areas and quests and a very dedicated staff (plus one of the most complete dedicated soundpacks I've seen next to alteraeon), and even crafting, see the topic in general game discussion. Wayfare1444 has amazing crafting and building and exploring, and has had some recent access fixes, plus it's a very different world to most muds being colonizing an alien planet.Frandom (see new releases), is a lot like a giant interactive fiction game and has recently had some good updates. Avalon is huge and complex and takes either paying or joining a player organization but is like a much extended version of Clok. then there is lament which people have tried recently. Just have a browse around the b
oards and some of the recent topic sinse some very good new muds withdifferent mechanics have been tried out lately and many of them have great access too.Hth.
