2021-01-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Vulcan via Audiogames-reflector

Strange problem with code factory voices.

I was wondering if anyone has ever had to re-regester their code factory voices for nvda multiple times?  This morning I got on my comp and heard the following: please re-regester this product.  I know for a fact that I did not unregester the voices, that would just be madness. Does anyone of the reasoning why that would happen or for a better alternative for high quality voices?

Re: Code Factory voices

Probably just about as legal as rolling your own eloquence apk to get around the DRM you're punished with for buying the damn thing in the first place. DRM that they do not mention anywhere.Interestingly, this is now your only way of getting eloquence on android as they've removed it from the play store because it apparently wasn't making them enough money and they didn't want to make an arm 64 version.

Re: Code Factory voices

Even if I did have it , and even if you did purchase the voices with the official app, I don't know how legal it would be for one to use the premium voices on the unofficial app after purchasing them. Technically it goes against Nuance's license agreement, but we technically didn't agree to that agreement, we agreed to Code Factory's agreement but they're essentially sublicensing the software. I do believe an attempt was made to invest Nuance for antitrust based on the amount of companies they have brutally acquired through sleazy and maybe even illegal means. But it went nowhere, and now it's doubtful they'll be investigated since they're apparently working on some Government contracted voice recognition or some other crap. And now Nuance is kind of a somewhat muted factor now that Apple, Google and Amazon's Ivona are competing for top dog in the natural voice market.

Re: Code Factory voices

@jack.Ah, I stand corrected. Still honestly couldn't ever see myself buying it though purely because of the price tag. If they were  to make an addon that was just for eloquence at a cheaper price, now that I could and probably would jump on, but seeing as I have a configuration with dictionary entries for most crash words fixed, plus much higher quolity than can be gotten with the code factory addon, I don't honestly feel any regret sticking with what I have. Codefactory and nv access are both cumponies I can support, but it seems a little pointless seeing as most of it goes to nuance, effectively going nowhere seeing as those guys basically have unlimited money already.

Re: Code Factory voices

My biggest problem is Nuance's mobil licensing contract. Apparently Code Factory is not allowed to distribute premium quality voices at all on the mobile platform. Never mind the fact that it is technically possible to run them on mobile. This is a big problem when some of the standard-quality voices sound, and let's be delicate here, like a tongue-tied drunken speech-impedimentedclearly-spliced voice avatar while they're trying to eat. Seriously. I bought Evan and can take his premium variant, but can't stand his standard quality so I'm using his compact variant and while it sounds more natural to me, it is more quiet. Honestly wouldn't mind if we were to ditch the natural voice movement entirely and focus our intentions of a fully modern, open source forment synth that we can all agree on. I personally think Espeak is natural with some tweaking, but there are people who can't stand it. What we need is some middle-road between Eloquence and DEctalk, knowing that Dectalk will remain as it is, a great synth, but with its old code being unlocateable. I had confidence in Speech Player as being that replacement but sadly they abandoned that project. Not surprising considering it's hard to single-handedly develop a synth while actively maintaining a screen reader. But there's someone out there that can do someting like this, which is why I'm excited to see what Philip can come up with. It's scary when voices are so natural that hard-working Voiceover talent have to convince clients have less opportunities when some fortune-five hundred company will take the cheap/lazyass approach of using synths for their static, never-changing phone prompts...

Re: Code Factory voices

@Cmerri: No, Eloquence was not even made by IBM. IT was made by Eloquent Technologies, Incorporated, IBM adopted the speech for use in their Viavoice product. Also, Nuance technically owns eci.dll, if you're talking about the one from JAWS. It was never actually legal for anyone to use the dll outside of JAWS, the only reason it was so accepted in the first place is that there really was no legitimate solution for Eloquence for NVDA, but now there is. Like I said, I have legitimate access to an Eloquence that can be used with NVDA through my copy of Kurzweil1000, the only software package I'm aware of that still actively carries the openly-usable sapi4 Eloquence. MOst of you will more than likely not be using that package though as it's quite pricy. At any rate, stupid as it may be Nuance does own the rights to the library so they can do whatever they want with it, and there will be no one to stop them because competition is next to none in the text to speech industry if we aren't counting in the virtual assistant's race to the top, so if you're using Eloquence through an unofficial means you aren't within your rights to say hey look there's this perfect solution that totally works and it won't cost you a dime. Technically possible? Yes. Legal? No.By that same token I do wonder how long Nuance can technically keep their hold on the Eloquence library seeming as though they don't want to update the legacy code. Eloquence has been one of JAWS's biggest selling points for the past decade and a half now, and once Windows makes the switch to Arm 64bit, it may be the end of that era. Then again, it may be the end of JAWS given all the legacy code that still powers the thing to this day.

Re: Code Factory voices

Yeah, I guess, sort of. Doesn't make they're business moddle any less stupid though. The fact still remains that IBM made eloquence originally, so anyone who still has viavoice or IBM tts or  whatever they called it is still very much within they're rights to use it, and the NVDA addon uses DLL's from jaws, which are freely available to anyone even if you're just using the 40 minute mode.

@3 Nuance very much has a right to charge for it much as we might not like this fact. They own the rights to the software and as far as I know the payment scheme they force anyone wanting to integrate their speech in software is based on royalties, so they get some cash from each sale.

Re: Code Factory voices

Code Factory has to pay royalties to Nuance for all the licenses they sell. You do however get a better deal with the Vocalizer package from them, since you get Eloquence plus all the Vocalizer voices you could want. I do believe that is getting an update to work with the beta eventually. The Eloquence included is of slightly lesser value to me since I already have Eloquence because of my copy of Kurzweil, because Sapi4 is still supported in NVDA 2019.3 funnily enough.
