Re: Halo - another big step towards accessibility

@25 and to anyone else who wants to try this out if they own the game on PCYou can indeed use NVDA on PC with MCC.  However, due to a bug in the current version of the game, you have to restart NVDA once the game is fully loaded in.  If successful, the menus should read as intended.  Had to figure this out myself when I got a PC copy recently.

Re: Halo - another big step towards accessibility

Depends, there are a few approaches people could take. The first would be something like overwatch, high detail spacial audio for actions, footsteps, unique audio for each creature, collision sounds, etc. Terrain navigation is a bit trickier, some use guides or landmarks, audio beacons as reference points, etc. Another approach could be depthmap sonifiers for snapshots of surrounding terrain. Map navigation or radar is something else that could use some tweaking, but because its easier to get overwhelmed by too many sounds playing, it would also make sense to gate these features into distinct quick access modes, like a radar ping, map mode, sonifier pulse, etc. over top of more immersive environmental audio like actions, footsteps, or maybe the sounds of creatures stepping on grass or brushing up against plants. Hm, the sound system of Theif; The Dark Project comes to mind, like walkingon metal or marble surfaces, acoustic absorption of different wall textures and surfaces, etc.

@15 they're just coming out of crunch at the moment, probably not a good time! I'd wait until Unity release their in-engine screenreader functionality, at that point it'll be relatively easy for FM to do. @16 it isn't an accessibility mod, it's part of the game. A good chunk of the menus are accessible using screenreaders, as if you were browsing a website.

Re: Halo - another big step towards accessibility

Very glad to see the positivity surrounding this new breakthrough in menu narration, even if it does appear as if accessible menus is all that's being done for the majority of titles. This is, to my knowledge at least, the first game to allow for not only console and PC narration (Gears 5, Crackdown 3, Sea Of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 to name but a few have already achieved this), but also the first console game to also have menu narration via screen readers available on PC.As for how I completed all of the main-line Halo games (Halo 5, CE: Anniversary, 2: Anniversary, ODST, 3, 4 and Reach in that order), it's all been via co-op with sighted players who were willing to assist, usually just me and one other player.  I also use a 5.1 surround sound system (Logitech Z906 for those who are interested), though I did play some levels with a headset as well. With Gears 5 and MCC doing so much for accessibility in their respective series, I can only hope that Halo: Infinite takes the lessons from both and combines them to create an even more immersive and accessible experience.  If I can use sniper rifles and other long-range guns etc in a PVE mode in Infinite and do well with them instead of just shooting and hoping for instance, I'll be very pleased.

@9 This is actually something quite different! Everything else so far has had either internal self voicing or sending text strings directly to narrator, this is exposing its UI to screenreaders. So you can use NVDA to navigate the menus. As far as I'm aware that hasn't ever been done in a AAA game before. There are games where this would be enough to make it fully accessible, like hearthstone or football manager.@8 @9 have a chat with sightlesskombat, I believe he has completed all of the halo games

Remember, access fingers are not limited to the completely Vi community. remember the recent Spider-Man game for the PS 4 was lorded as an incredibly accessible game, but the access was for individuals with motor disabilities. We have more than just 1 category of disabled gamers.  Also can confirm, a friend I know actively plays sighted games and watches TV, but still needs a screenreader for reading small text. He could use magnifying software for this, but finds that that still hurts his eyes and is way slower to road at times. The good thing about this is obviously-   1. You can finally use your favorite screenreader with appropriate settings to interact with your avorite game, and 2.    2. this could put us closer to stuff like game notifications reading outloud while in gameplay. I know some games have managed this with pop-ups.

Re: Halo - another big step towards accessibility

Totally understand where you're coming from Darren. But there are blind people playing Halo already, have a chat with sightlesskombat for example. It's also worth bearing in mind that lots of screenreader users still have some residual vision too, there's a big difference between finding it too hard to read menu text and not being able to see at all.Holding back is not an option for the developers. It is now illegal to launch a game that has communications functionality without that communications functionality and any menus or info needed to access that communications functionality being blind accessible. But they're going beyond those basic legal requirements and covering more than they're required to, which is awesome. I have no doubt that in years to come there will be a Halo game that has been designed from the ground up to be blind accessible, but that won't just appear out of thin air in a puff of smoke, it will be based on learnings from what has gone before - including what's learned from this game about screenreader accessibility. And not just Halo either - other first party Xbox games will learn lessons from it, and the wider industry in general will learn lessons from it. Which is why feedback is so important.

Halo - another big step towards accessibility

Halo: Master Chief Collection has become another game to offer partial narration for menus. They've put up a post detailing which areas are and are not narrated, and something new too - workarounds you can use for areas that aren't covered, including keyboard shortcuts.Something else that is very different in their approach is that the narration is not internal or limited to windows/xbox narrator - it's full screenreader support, works with NVDA.As is the norm at the moment the accommodations only extend as far as the menus, the gameplay itself is no more accessible than other halo games. But it's still a vitally important step, the lessons being learned at the moment are laying the groundwork for years to come.So any feedback at all that you have on either the existing screenreader accessibility OR the workarounds they're using for areas that screeenreaders and keyboards can't reach will be hugely beneficial.https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/news … collection
