Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

I remember a while back a security whole was found where you could telnet into the Apex without a password on the local network. Dont know if Humanware ever fixed this (knowing them, I suspect not) so I wonder if it would be possible to telnet into the Apex when its hooked up to ethernet. My guess would be no, since the OS isnt yet fully loaded, but a lot of routers have bootloaders that allow basic interactions over the network like transfering files with tftp or sending basic commands in case the firmware is corrupted. I have an MPower so cant test this myself, but itd be interesting to find out if it would work.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Well, a similar thing happened to my Apex recently, and nothing Ive tried has brought it back.I had a problem a couple of weeks ago where I was unable to connect to the internet. While troubleshooting the problem, seeing whether it had something to do with my computer rather than the router or my ISP (I had reinstalled Windows a couple of days before that), I decided I would see if my Apex could connect wirelessly. It didnt, so I switched it off and thought nothing more of it. But I forgot to turn the wifi off before I did that. When I turned the Apex back on, nothing happened. I just got a blank display. Its been that way ever since. Ive done every reset there is. It goes through two or three boot cycles. The counter on the right hand side of the display does eventually get up to 61, and it acts like its going to boot, but instead of playing the Keysoft startup sound, it plays this other, far too pleasant for the circumstance sound, which I ass
ume is an error of some sort, but the display remains blank after that. Pressing any key or combination of keys at that point just gives me a different error sound. Its beyond frustrating, because it seems obvious to me that the OS has become corrupt. And if this were any other OS, I could format it and get on with my life. But because its proprietary, Im supposed to shell out a crapload of money that I dont have just so I can have a working Braille display? I dont think so.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Yep, if nothing worked then you pretty much just bricked the unit. Hopefully they dont make you pay much for that repair, after all the guy who pretty much shut you down on the phone couldve given you the same suggestions we did before jumping to conclusions. This is the thing I absolutely have against assistive devices is that they are *not* using a mainstream operating system, but a stripped-down to nothing version of the system. I wouldve recommended getting the braille plus 18 its the most mainstream blind device youll find. I dont have one, but I do have an apex, and to be completely honest with you the unit is not worth getting impressed over. Perhaps the only good thing is the free maps, but the braille plus 18 comes with nearby explorer free of charge, and guess what you dont even have to pay for updates, unlike the braillenote gps. Maps are also free too. Besides, its a very powerful gps app and even if you get it on an andr
oid phone for 99 dollars its still worth it.

A little bit confused; I mean if it shut off during an update I could understand, but the os loads, it says starting keysoft, is there a way to get a log thats more descriptive than starting keysoft 14%?

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Ive had a similar thing to this happen to my apex, though granted not while updating.Ill go through all possible steps, some of which youve already done:soft reset (probably impossible at this point) just press reset and let it run.hard reset (power off) hold down reset for 5 seconds until it beeps, release button and let it boot. Same as removing battery, and youve already tried it.jkl/456 reset: hold down the keys, press reset (or hold it until beep), release reset button. Hold keys for a bit (I do until the percentage changes), then release.sdf/123 reset: same as above, accept using different keys. This is a different form of reset than the jkl, but how Im not exactly certain. It has something to do with deleting settings or clearing other data.service reset does not exist anymore (thats only m power/earlier), at least as far as I know and have been able to find out.As a final conclusion, I will say
that its extremely, extremely difficult to really break these things either by accident or intentionally. That said, you really might be stuck. If the tech on the phone shut you down quickly Id almost advise you to try calling again and see if you get a more forthcoming person, as most of the ones Ive dealt with will give you more data than you seem to have received.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Wasnt there a way to go into the bootloader with I think 4-5 and reset and rewrite the entire flash rom from a flash card or something? Or was that MPower or earlier; I remember doing that to a persons MPower when it didnt want to boot, although it was with a cf card, go into the boot menu and hit enter on update keysoft; you had to put the fw image on the root of the card and call it nk.bin; isnt there a way to rewrite the rom from an sd card or something or did they get rid of that with the apex? I havent used a braille note for several years, but it seems quite moronic that theres no way to rewrite the flash rom from a card, especially considering the closed nature of those devices; what are you supposed to do, go to your boss and be like hey boss, I cant work for the next few months because my braille note has to be sent back to the company because they screwed up the flash rom?

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

there is no way to rewrite the rom. it was 4-5 reset on the mpower but when humanware migrated to the piece of junk ce 6.0 it went away. heres what Id do. get the HWI file onto an sd card and place the card in the bn. thrn hold down dots 4-5-6 reset. it might or might not show you the update screen. reinstall keysoft if it does, if not your machine is bricked and cannot even access the basic ce kernel or driver/dll functions. at that point you may have no other option but to send it in and never take it back.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

I was most curious about the interactive maps that were freely available in the update. In retrospect I wouldnt have updated if I had known this would happen...but then youd expect a company to make updates that dont corrupt your devices flash module... Something which Ill point out when I call Humanware again. And apparently Im not the only person this has happened to.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Hi Guitarman. Alas, no luck. Holding down the reset button for a while simply resulted in the Apex going through several resets in succession. I held it down through ten reset cycles, just to play it safe, but again, after a while of staying at ten percent, the device is now solidly lodged at fourteen percent. Guess like a call to Humanware is in order tomorrow...

Have I just killed my Apex?

Hey folks,So, Im in a bit of a pickle here. I was just trying to install Keysoft 9.4 on my BrailleNote, and all was running as planned...until the device got to the rebooting part. Since then, its been stuck at the Starting Keysoft prompt, at 14%, for about an hour, and nothing has changed since. I dont suppose anyone can offer up some advice on how to jolt this thing forward? And I just got it yesterday too...

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

aw man that doesnt sound too good. I havent messed with any note takers since the original braille note like 15 years ago. However when something fails to boot after updating, its not a good sign. Id just say after an hour, its probably not coming back so I might shut it off and turn it back on and see if it boots up normally. Thats real crappy luck, All I can say is connect it to power if youre updating in future or make sure the battery is charged all the way, not that that would have helped in your case since the update seemed to go through. It just seems like youre stuck in a bootloop.

Re: Have I just killed my Apex?

Against my better judgment, I unplugged the device from power, and removed the battery, which is pretty much the only way to turn it off completely at this point. After about a minute, I put the battery back in, and plugged it back in. The Apex beeped, the Starting Keysoft prompt came up again, stayed at ten percent for a bit, then went right back to fourteen percent, where its now once again sitting. Yep, looks like I really did kill this Apex.

Hi Locutus.Ive had this same problem and I didnt kill my apex. Press and hold the reset button for as long as possible keep the battery in and keep it plugged in this should reboot your apex. If this doesnt work press and hold the reset button while pressing dots 1 through 3 at the same time. And if this doesnt work press and hold the reset button and hold down dots 4 through 6 at the same time. If none of this works then Im sorry to say your apex is probably dead.Hth.

Yes I would call humanware Ive never seen an apex go through several reset cycles at once thats insane! You could also try to take out the battery until tomorrow when you call humanware. I did this when my braillenote was acting up and the next day it worked fine. It might not work but it might because your giving the apex a rest.Hth.

I think its not bricked; you said it got to the rebooting... screen, i.e it didnt die while updating? It could be a coruption in the flash; noone knows; with windows CE... Im shocked it can even beep with that mess of an os; but try removing the battery, waiting 30 seconds and reinserting it, then a service reset, if that doesnt work, you might have no choice but to call humanware; since theres no documentation on the damn things, and no logs either, noone outside of the mistical valts of humanware has a clue what to do about those braille palm pilots...
