Re: I got a new pc! 76. Kaby lake celerons with turbo boost, despite being dual cores, the fact that they go up to something like 2.5 GHZ, they are not terrible. I used one, and it got around browsing OK. I wouldn't do much more with them, however. They perform very similar to my kaby lake pentium. I have 4 threads, that has 2. That has turbo, I don't. So it kind of levels it out. Both machines had 4 GB and EMMC, so it's a pretty fair compare. And before anyone asks me why I'd look at such garbage: 1) It wasn't mine. 2) You can pick up such a thing for as little as £150, and they beat a chrome book any day. If they last you just under 2 years, you managed to escape college restrictions, and having to dual boot them. I mean I didn't say that. Having said that, I'm refusing to put my sandy bridge celeron with the code name of b815, above windows 7. Anything above 7 and performance goes down the shitter, even with an SSD on that one.I have an HP compaq 6715b, with an AMD turion X2, it was going to go in the trash. Ran win10 1511, 2 GB at like 800 MHZ? 150 GB, what I assume to be original sea gate drive. , due to being extremely hot. So I bought it home, and started to troubleshoot. I first noticed the horrible performance, and the fact that the temps themselves weren't reaching peak critical temp, but it was indeed going with full blast, and it was, shall we say, warm? Then I went on HP's site, and found out that this comp was XP through vista, It has a bios dated back to 2007. I then asked a sighted, and found an XP professional OEM product key at the bottom. So, since I always wanted an old toy for backwards compatibility, and didn't want a virtual machine, I threw XP professional on it, installed the drivers off HP's site, and I have what seems to be a way over powered machine for the OS that is on it. It's nippy. It gets around, runs dinosaur apps no problem, (even old basic audio editors run) and the temps are around 50 to 60 degrees, with the fan barely going, and average CPU usage of 10% or below. And that is what I call giving it a second life. Having said all that, it will handle win7 no problem with it's crappy original drive, I just don't need that machine to run 7, plus no product key. My dad found an HP laptop in the trash with an AMD CPU and it ran Windows 10 like absolute garbage! You have to put EI.CFG in the sources folder of your installation media, whether that be extracted ISO, or direct win10 USB.I don't need to call you a hypocrite for a number of reasons.1) Your initial post, think it was post 3? Already did that, if that didn't, post 71 did. 2) The fact that you're on an i3 identical, and it works for you, confirms my point, that i3s aren't completely useless, as long as you don't have rocket expectations. The fact that you're using one, and can relate with that, is a great example.3) 7th gen I3s were released in 2016, end of 2016, you're Jan 2018. So you might actually be more comparable to an 8th gen i3. Either ways that thing is 2 cores 4 threads, or 4 cores 4 threads, (I can't quite remember) so it's not going to be anything above a 7th gen i5, seeing as all 8th gens above an i3 are quad core with hyper threading. Then again, even that, has advantages over Intel, though 3rd and 4th gen AMD's are the way to go. That's still zen2, given it's 2018. You got at least 2 ways of doing it.1) In win10 home, go in settings, update security, activation, change product key. Type in the new key, and let it do it's thing. 2) Your best friend, EI.CFG. It's the same thing that we used on windows 8.1 to bypass force product key installation, for example, during virtual machines. If you don't specify what addition you want, when you first boot windows off USB, you're going to get an image selection prompt, as if you had no product key at all.Open a text editor, paste this in there, [Channel]_Default[VL]0Save it as ei.cfg (make sure it's all files if using notepad on windows, so it's not a TXT, and that it's CFG) slam it on your win10 USB, and boot. If you want pro, replace default with pro. I think, (can't verify right now) if you miss that line out, that is to say, if you just put [Channel][VL]0That will bring up the image selection as well. Then once installed, you just input the key through settings, or slmgr /ipk (insert product key) then slmgr /ato from command prompt.Windows first looks for EI.CFG, then it looks for motherboard imbedded key, if neither are located, it then looks on your hard drive. If neither 3 places have a product key discovered, it will then prompt you. Hence, we're using EI.CFG to overwrite the whole EFI imbedded key business.Don't quote me on this, but you might be able to put the key in EI.CFG directly. I never did it that way, though. I'm not going to name people individually, but there's going to be something relating to almost all 69 posts, so I'd recommend you to read it. Long journey, please hold on.1) 7th gen i3. Depending on your use case, it will do you just fine. It probably performs higher than older i5s, (talking of 2nd 3rd, maybe 4th gens as well), so people calling it a shit box, just because it's an i3, please go use one first, or look at some bench marks. Because I have something weaker than it, and it does basics just fine, (read on).2) Downgrade it to windows 8.1! I'd be the first person to advocate for a downgrade, except... Nothing above 6th gen intels officially supports anything below win10! That is to say, that 7th gen is a win10 exclusive. You will almost certainly have no graphics, you probably won't have WIFI out of the box... I can just imagine someone attempting this fatal activity with their only computer, then be stunned because they have no way to get it online to download the wireless drivers... Please, be careful with such suggestions... If the person isn't experienced, you could be causing more damage by trying to help.3) I absolutely agree, throw out that 1 TB drive, put it in an external inclosure, and throw in a 128 SSD, and another 4 GB stick. I don't imagine it would be rocket science to work on it. You need to find out the clock speed, and whether you got 1 or 2 RAM sticks. It's either 2 2 GB sticks, or 1 4 GB, and you have a spare stick.4) Let's talk about shit boxes, because I have one, in the name of a surface go. It has extremely shitty specs, in the name of an intel pentium 4415y, 4 GB DDR3, and 64 GB EMMC. And you know what? For audio games, discord, skype, browsing, etc, it does just fine. How do I know? It's been my secondary device for over a year and a half. Even when the CPU is maxed out, it really isn't terrible. Those of you consider i3s shit boxes are either super rich, or have 8 core 16 thread server level intel machines. A 10th gen g i3 scores higher on bench than my 8th gen i7 u, that is to say, newer i3s have waaay better single core score. It's no longer about the CPU name, it's all about the letter and the generation. For instance, my "shitty" 8th gen pentium scores exactly the same as my i3 3110m, even though the i3 has a better clock speed of 800 MHZ. Neither have boosts.6) If you know what you're doing, you can get reasonable performance out of win10 on that 7th gen with that RAM and that drive. I would give examples, but win10 worshippers would come down my throat of how disabling memory compression or disabling windows search, or drive cashing, or nuclearising services is going to ruin this beautiful operating system. But to give an idea, I have 106 processes running over here, and I'm on Windows 10 20H2 (64-bit) build 19042.662, with an uptime of 4 days, 23 hours, 43 minutes, 40 seconds. All of you on win10 go compare how many processes you got. I'm sitting at Physical: 3.47 GB of 7.88 GB used (44%). Virtual: 4.74 GB of 9.95 GB used (47.6%). So yes, it's absolutely doable. As long as you understand your hardware's capabilities, you research your needs, accept the limitations, don't mind a bit of free DIY tinkering, and accept that you're never going to win street races, you may find yourself doing just fine. Instead of 40 windows, you will only have 10 open. Instead of 5 seconds, it may take 20. But it's nothing that's going to completely break you, or give you limitations that will ruin you in the long run. Take it from someone who has a device of your specs. And if people need a demonstration of my tablet, and how it's not slow, shout at me I guess, and I'll see what I can do.If you guys want an example of what I would have never put on win10, and something that 7th gen i3 will absolutely beat, look at post 8 with their sandy bridge. Ideal win8.1 candidate. 6) I feel like some of you seem to forget that some people can only afford so much. I'd rather run a 7th gen i3 u, than a 4th gen i7 u, for example. Then we haven't talked about spector and melt down, the older the CPU, the more fucked you are. I'll admit, for an average user, many of this shit is probably taunting. But I feel like experienced people can get by and gain more out of lower end hardware, just because we know what we're dealing with. If you're a developer, and need visual studio, sure, don't get an i3. But calling it shit without knowing one's use case is just amusing, I'm sorry. Especially because everyone who called it shit have higher specs than it, meaning, they should know how to maximise the capability of low hardware. Or maybe I just research too much and actually find solutions, rather than shelling out money. Either ways. This IdeaPad I believe is just painted steel or whatever metal, and the colour is quite attractive, however its prone to slip, and it crawls my blood. Guys, since we're talking computers, I'm looking at a Lenovo ThinkPad 2014, wwith an I7 i believe 3515m, but I'm not sure the last 2 degits exactly, its at 2.9ghz, and it has 4 logical cores. It comes with a 120 SSD, but I'm planning to keep my current SSD, and later get a 512 SSD. I also forgot, it has 8GB of ramm, and costs about 270USD. It also has a dedicated graphics card, its an Invidia, but I can't remember the exact series. It comes with WWindows ten, and the guy let me use one in the store, and it was snappy. It booted up in like 4 seconds and there is vertually zero damage. The only thing is they installed a 8.4 amp battery in it, but its otherwise in prestine condition. Thoughts? I'm not the most ech savvy guy out there, but for the price it seems damned good. If things goes according to plan, I'll be getting it by the end of the week. As for my other impressions of it, it has a pointing stick, which, lets say, has, caused the keyboard to be completely different to everything I've ever used before. The keys are so satisfyiing to click its not even funny. The screen is still great, and there's dedicated volume buttons, and a custom button. I'm not sure if its possible, but I'll most likely map it to NVDA. But all and all, compared to my current idea pad and its 1.1ghz processer, its a damned bargain. Also, in some stores in Trinidad, they're selling del's equiped with 4GB for 600 US fucking D. like, wt bloody f? Eitherwwways, I knowww its a bit old, ut it seems fair for the price. GPD have always allowed the CPUs in their machines to run at the higher end of their power limits plus they've always let us push them beyond that if we wish. So though the X7-Z8750 sounds low end and shitty on paper, you have to take into account the X7-Z8750 in the win was also mated to an active cooling system instead of crammed into a plastic tablet with a bit of thermal tape on the top, was allowed to run at a far higher power limit and was tuned to go as fast as they could make it go.

I'm happy to have finally bought my own laptop last year, it's a Lenovo ThinkPad e490 with an i7-8565u, 16 gb ram, no dedicated GPU and 512 gb ssd. Before that though, I was stuck with really crappy models. In my case it wasn't because we couldn't afford it, but also because we were all in agreement that I just didn't need all that much. Though admittedly it wasn't even that good at the time of purchase, and having a smoothly running system was... well, not something I was even used to. I also didn't really pick any of them myself. Sometimes I'm still wondering if I'm even getting the most out of this laptop, because my use cases probably don't even require that much ram or CPU, which is also why I didn't get a dedicated GPU. But it's at least nice to have it, should the need ever arise. And at least I won't have to worry about stuff slowing to a crawl. This machine has a 1.3 GHz i5-4250U processor, 4 GB LPDDR3 1600 MHz RAM, and a 128 GB SSD. It's not the fastest machine by any means, but I don't do very demanding tasks, so it really doesn't matter. I wouldn't mind a 256 GB SSD, but I have over 4 TB at my disposal with a combination of USB hard drives and flash drives, so it really doesn't matter. Re: I got a new pc! Well, laptops most of them don't like you upgrading the RAM. You would probably have to take it to a shop. Having worked on several of the newer styles ones that are unibody without any expansion slots, it's work that requires finesse and patience and I wouldn't recommend it to the first timer and certainly not on your everyday machine.That said, I also wouldn't recommend upgrading a machine that isn't good to begin with. You'll just be chasing the latest thing and you aren't going to be replacing the CPU on a laptop. I'd say work with it as best you can and save up the money you'd shell out for upgrades to buy something better.Getting by with a computer like that is doable, if not exactly pleasant. Don't turn it off unless you go away for a while. If you need to restart it or turn it on, just hit the button and go do something else for like 15 minutes, maybe less if you have an SSD in there. Then, keep your browser tabs to a minimum, like maybe two or three at most. Close it completely when you want to do something like using Reaper or the like. By completely, I mean right click on its icon in the task tray and go to exit. Re: I got a new pc! The RAM is a bit low, but I'm running 2 machines with 4 GB RAM and it's okay as long as you don't run too many programs at once. If possible, try to upgrade that to 8 GB. If the machine doesn't have a solid state drive, put one in ASAP! Even with 4 GB RAM, an SSD will make the machine perform so much better.
