Re: I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

Hmmm qualifications wize, I am certified for entry level computing and business which technically means I can type.I have also a entry level cert for broadcasting so I guess I am able to broadcast to I guess. But as I said my qualifications are out of date and I needed a lot of help to get them and there were visual issues, and other things. In the scheme of things they are probably complete rubbish now. They were not much to start off with I also have a technical pass in spreadsheeting and math cert, but with either everything done for me with the mouse in the case for spreadsheeting meaning I have a theory pass only and the math again no checking as such not sure aboutthe validity of things. At any rate I have forgotten all I have learned since I don't need it on a daily basis and well that was then.So if I went again, I'd first have to go back to uni and try to qualify for something and or at least update what I had, then get a degree in something then try to get a job and hmph its a lot.My test work requires me to just do the tests, and get payed and nothing else.On the subject of boredum, yeah, web and software testing is really boring. On the flip side you don't need to do much a day, usually 1-2 hours of work a day to get the cash.Game testing a bit more but still. My government research when I get it it dose rake in the cash like no ones business especially since last year they put my pay up by quite a lot pluss overtime, transport, a free beer and a meal and direct access to my section boss, so its not that bad for a field. However yeah, being wired up to several devices in a designed environment isolated from all bar the techs and the outside techs and tester that is with you and slaving at a reading tablet for 3-4 hours a time is well its hard but yeah it does get the cash in.I've even got high enough that they will pay out directly in cash, they used  to do vouchers for various things but not to me.The standard rats have to use the voucher system and that can be fuel or the supermarket or something.Going direct is a good way to work if you can get that sort of access.Yeah I have looked at the automatic access, mostly jaws based of course. As for accessibility for things, if it works with jaws it should work with nvda.Though jaws needs everything scripted in order for things to be accessible because its jaws of course.Nvda can bennifit if some stuff is scripted but it doesn't need it necessarily.

I tried two translation ones that seemed accessible, submitted some sort of test application and translation (it was some dull news article that would apparently get revised by someone), and then I was expected to hear back from them whether I would pass or not, and its been a year since, and of course nothing. So meh.

i don't know other country have similar or equivalence site or not please search it on your country.but in my country if you don't want to transcribing audio it is alternative way.writing novel yes it simple you become writer write some novel that match your genre as you like.fantasy, romance, deva, horror etc.pick anything that you like writing story and sell with package or individual chapter.it up to you from my experience selling whole package or e-book give more income.in my country there are 3 accessible site that let you sell e-book whole package and each chapter respectively.this task is require creative thinking and require your copy of identity card and copy of bank book for selling confirmation.good thing for these side is you can selling same story without copyrights issue.since your rights from story is yours you can do what you want if not breaking any rules from these sites.unless this story got publish with some company and your copyrights with their company not end yet.this will give extra income a bit obtain money directly through your bank account some site transfer automatic.some site it take some process for withdrawal.it not hard though read carefully when you selling these kind of stuff since these sites will charge some percentage of your income each month.you will get money as long as your promote your novel to engage more people and your creative will not end.last thing to get more income than other novel is make sure you writing well without copy other style and not the same as everybody else.

I have the CompTIA A+ certification, but no one seems to really care. From everything I've heard, remote opportunities for the blind are just not there, which is extremely frustrating! I ideally want to work from home for a variety of reasons, not the least of which includes reduced travel costs, having to learn new buildings, etc.I'll have to look at Linux+ and see if that's something I'd be willing to do. I'm primarily interested in technical support, so I could definitely do something over the phone. i'm not sure about Linux administration, primarily because I'm the only one teaching myself things. I have a little experience with Linux, but I'm still very much a newbie.I've also thought about accessibility testing or computer security, but from what I've heard those require you to know programming. I don't have the patience for programming and probably never will.I've also thought about being an entrepreneur, but the more I talk to people, the more I wonder if it's really right for me. I don't want to go through all the bullshit of paperwork, marketing, etc. This is extremely frustrating! I'm not a very social person, mostly because I'm simply not interested in most of the world and what most people are interested in.I could do writing, but the problem is the subject matter. I don't care about most things, so would only want to write about computers or anything related to that subject. I've been fortunate in that regard because I write iOS and Android app reviews for the www.bridgingapps.org website. That's been pretty cool, but it's definitely not something that I can sustain myself with.

Re: I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

I don't mean to lower anyone's hopes when I say this, but I don't believe there are many IT positions, especially entry level or junior positions which are remote. I may be completely wrong on this. If I am, I would be happy to learn where I can find them as well. COMPTIA A+ is good for desktop and help desk support positions I believe. So, there may be virtual phone support positions. Of course, it's trial and error when it comes to accessibility of the software. I believe there are remote Linux admin positions out there. Therefore if you can manage to get a Linux certification, one might have a better chance of qualifying for such a job. Of course, do look around on websites like Indeed and even LinkedIn to confirm or learn of any remote IT positions and their associated qualifications. That's always been my strategy for software engineering positions when I was applying. As for Accessibility testing and specialist roles, I know there is https://www.paciellogroup.com/category/careers/. They occasionally have remote Accessibility Engineer positions, which is a fancy way of saying accessibility specialist. You might have to be well-versed in WCAG, VPAT, and all that legal stuff, but that's one example I can provide. Also, Deque Systems has a career page which, from time to time, has listings for Accessibility Testers and Software Engineers as Remote positions. Again, there are a few other websites and positions on job board websites I've come across that have open positions for remote Accessibility specialists. As a fair warning, although these are accessibility positions, they still have a somewhat flexible requirement for those who have degrees in Computer Science or related technology fields. Not all of them do. And it never hurts to apply. That goes for anyone in general. If you think you're even closely qualified, I always recommend people apply for a job position. Oh, and Pearson, the company I used to work with, is probably also looking for remote Accessibility QA candidates. Also, just throwing it out there, if you live in Austin Texas in the US, I might have a job position. It's not remote, but it's a good position if you want to get your foot in the door for accessibility. Good luck to you all who are in a job search.

I've found accessibility testing to be repetitive and boring, but it did earn my bread and butter for about three years. You don't need to code for it unless they ask you to actually fix the access issues you find (rather unreasonable and has never happened to me.) The more screen readers you know, the better. I had to eventually get it through my head that just because something is accessible with JAWS doesn't mean it will be with NVDA or VoiceOver or vice versa. For the automated checks, nowadays there are good tools that do most of the basic stuff for you like looking for unlabeled links, buttons and images.

How accessible would proofreading be? I have a Braille display that I can use, so knowing where things such as incorrect punctuation and capitalization are wouldn't be a problem, but I would hope the platforms would be reasonably accessible. Also, for those who have done accessibility testing, what kinds of requirements do you need to fulfill in order to be able to do that? Do you need experience in coding of any kind? And, is there a database of sorts where I could get more information about potential jobs? A couple of you mentioned that they're out there if you know where to look, mind pointing me in that general direction? Finally, I would be interested in any info on remote IT jobs as well.

Re: I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

Hmmm being a tester and doing a bit of sound work, I'd like to get into work like this. However, lets see, funding to start.I have goldwave, audacity, a lot of free sounds, a lot of sounds I either downloaded from games, cracked or got given to me from other dead places.I don't have the best gear.I have a reasonably powerfull laptop, and I could get a reasonably powerfull desktop if I needed it.The rest, hmmm.More advanced sound software, maybe an accessible ocr package like k1000 to handle ocr, and for completeness jaws and maybe a braille device, and probably a modern phone for starters, a better mic, a lot of things.Beta testing and web testing seem to be the easiest ways forward, as well as government research contracts, nice, classified and secure and earning the big bucks. But none of these are continuous, even the government contracts are not a garanteed thing even though I have worked my way to test pilot.Funding for projects is getting harder and harder, office space, hiring out lab and computer time to do the really big nural programming projects needs things like time, and working at weird times, etc.Testing for access is nice, boring and safe if I could ever get more of it.Beta testing is also nice boring and safe with almost no overhead to the lab rat or pilot doing it.None of my jobs need me to write more than the hours I do etc.I am on a few testing platforms but none of them have pulled any signifficant roles. On the other end of the scale, it would have been better if I got a job when I was 21-31 when I was actually needing work and in the university thing.I have been at home for most of my 37 years and love doing what I want.I don't think I would survive going to work mainstream now, pluss, the first thing I'd have to do would be to resit courses for office, windows, word, powerpoint and excell because I am qualified for 97 and xp but thats it.Officially my last windows training has qualified me for windows 1995-xp, jaws 6.0 and hal 12.So basically if I ever got a serious job, then I'd have to get a serious upgrade and I don't have the cash to unretard myself.Saying that if a company was prepaired to see past that and pay for my technology, training and extra studdies I'd be all for it.I almost got a job doing language tutorials, but the guy I did it for took 10 years to even come back to me with a possible offer in which case I had moved on.It would have been a good job but I had moved on.Also due to my timezone and all that, the best jobs for me are jobs where I work, and interact via email, no audio calls, no online interaction nothing like that unless it didn't matter and could be done to my timezone, I find it quite hard.I have been often banned/fired/ told I didn't help because the online bit of work I had to do happened while I was sleeping and there is no way I will constantly fuck up my day for a job that may or may not earn me cash and most of thatstuff didn't.Its just easier for all if that is never the case as such.Ideally my job would to either work for an international business that was flexable and tooktimezones into account for deadlines, everything from online to offline work, or a local business either offline or online that would do it face to face at home or at a location or online where I worked a set few hours and such and still could continue living my life. With my family all either retired or about to, there will be a period of traveling about with them, and if that meant work wize especially if it was local if I could have a laptop and a net connection then I would all be for it.I've practically been out of the mainstream world workforce to long to easily assimilate back into the corperate borg that easily if at all.Technically my bennifit forms say I am still looking, and in my mind it would be nice. But on a practical side I just havn't, even if I could, there is a lot of things I need to do, some of my education due to people helping me with access to things mean that well to get back will be a battle. Not to mention that I will have to use jaws for things since thats what blindies still use for jobs to some extent. The really big badguy in this mix, is that there is no funding unless I find a job and they agree to give it to me.I can't do everything completely myself and with some choices the funding agencies have done in the past I don't feel I can trust them that much if at all.Search through the forum, there you will find a lot of angry sweary rants on the subject. The world left me in a hole and I want to get out.But to get out to where I was before is going to be a challenge, and I am just not sure if even if I could if I'd want to get out now.Of course, if I knew I'd get somewhere this time or had a 90% chance of actually getting to the golden towers of propper life maybe I'd try.But I will keep that last bit of reserved strength either till I can get that thing whatever

Does anyone have information about accessible remote IT opportunities? I would ideally like to work from home, supporting people with computer issues. I have the A+ certification, but finding meaningful employment has been very difficult. A lot of what I hear tends to be that remote tools aren't that great for a blind person, which is unacceptable. Why isn't the NFB or any other organization doing anything to fix this problem? If everyone else has remote employment opportunities, why not blind people?Do you guys have any information regarding call centers? I've also been thinking about that. Perhaps I could do something with Comcast or AT? How accessible is something like that? Would I have to find a dedicated call center close to me or could I do it from my computer?I have a reasonably fast Internet connection, but it is very frustrating that I can't seem to find any remote computer support opportunities.

Re: I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

TranscribeMe is a similar service and was accessible last I heard. Pay isn't spectacular, $20 / audio hour (an audio hour usually takes about 2 or 3 hours depending on your typing speed, comprehension and of course the clip in question). The way it works can be irritating in that there's a backlog. You log in and basically just... wait until work appears on your dashboard, do the task, and wait for more. If you're already working from home and have extended breaks or time to kill, this may be a good option. Simply visit in the morning and check back periodically. Since the site runs on user requests there will be some days where nothing appears.I've made quite a bit freelancing lately, upwork being my platform of choice due to it's simplicity. While the fact stands that you are required to purchase credits, I find them usually being worth the small amount. Money hungry? Definitely. Let the 20% fee attest to that. Yet the platform seems quite a bit more tolerant to higher pay for higher quality if you can look past the clients demanding the next new Facebook at gross underpayment. As someone in school and looking for a part-time job on the side, I can't complain all that much. When it comes to freelance work, everyone has different experiences with different platforms, so don't hesitate to jump right in. There are hundreds of reviews and suggestions online that, along with a healthy dose of common sense, will serve to help you out. Name a skill and you can probably find jobs. If coding or audio/music production doesn't interest you, maybe voice acting. How about writing or proofreading? Many members of this forum are bilingual if not trilingual, look into language translation. Accessibility Q/A testing is difficult to find, but there if you know where to look. Certifications can really pay off as well.

This is a good topic. I currently have an office job, but have really considered a work-from-home position. I consider myself lucky because I have the opportunity to work from home if I wish, provided I can get work done. I also feel lucky because coding jobs are practically everywhere, and there is no shortage of remote positions. There are some good remote jobs as accessibility specialists if you know where to look. Unfortunately, I think there only in the US.

Hi.Yeah these are mostly snowball systems, as long as you don't recruit new people that work for the site and use your invite code you're not getting that much money for your work. I really wouldn't bother checking for those, it's mostly the same.As I said, post to a bulletin board and say what you have to offer. For example I do the ocasional computer help, I look after pets of persons who need someone to watch for them a few hours, I work at a horse stable and get my lessons for free there, so it pays off quite fine. It's not really a fixed income or you're always garanteed to get in the same every month, but i love doing stuff like that anyway.greetings Moritz.

Given that the audio was downloadable, I used winamp (or whatever other player works as long as you can control it from anywhere) and transcribed things just alright. But now what i see is a lot of freelance stuff that expects you to show that you are the best, above everyone else,  and do stunning things for a lower price than what is already out there in the market (happens with audio a lot)  so its just a bit, disloyal if you actually have done a career in that stuff.I would check out the website mentioned by #3, and try to see out of all of that what jobs are really accessible to do with screen readers.

Hi.Well, another idea would be to post online on a public bulletin board with the skills you have to offer, like coding, music production, knitting or what ever and see if you have any people that are interested in these kind of offers. The problem with these quick transcriber sites or easy jobs is that you earn some cents for your work and if you want to get in a smaller amound of money next to your regular income, you must usually work the same time as for your normal full day job, and get alot less money.Greetings Moritz.

@4  let's rephrase it.If you have skills such as sound design, coding, audio editing, writing, and if you also have money to spend on applications which will not guarantee  you to take the said job, then upwork is for you.

Here is a legitimate site that has a ton of jobs. There are companies as large as Apple and Amazon, and much smaller ones. There are lots of opportunities to work from home here, and the site tries its best to give only legitimate links. Ultimately, it's up to you to research it, but this site was recommended to me by a professional with credentials that I trust.Rat Race Rebellion Big List

Re: I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

It's funny, I was thinking of posting a similar topic about work from home oppurtunities. I would like to find something legitimate myself if I can, to help keep me afloat during a stressful time I'm going through. Keep in mind, I know that such oppurtunities rarely generate an actually sustainable income, and my BS meter is probably more sensitive than most, so anything claiming to be such would arouse a whole lot of suspicion in me, but I would feel better both if I had something to do with the ample amount of time on my hands, and if I could also generate a little cash. So, hopefully some folks here have some ideas, and thanks for posting this.

I have worked at home and here is what i learned. What about you?

So there was this recorder for skype which I don't think its available anymore, but they advertised a service that you could use from them too that allowed your recordings to be turned into text (by transcribing). SO I decided not to use that service, but rather to work for them. They are called scribie. So I signed up. I opened a paypal account, I did everything and I actually was transcribing. I did some clips and that was fine. They even paid you for your first, test run transcription and gave you a grade based on that. It was nice. I did that for a while until two things happened:1. I left the U.s. This meant that I could only use paypal to pay things that only used paypal, no withdrawing to international accounts was possible, at least for my country. So that made it a bit of a bummer, though still useful in some cases.2. The interface all of a sudden became inaccessible, it improved later, but I was so frustrated that I actually just cancelled the account there, deleted everything and just forgot about the whole thing completely. Another factor was that support team was not being really helpful or very polite, so that made me take that decision too. Still, I would say that it was nice while it lasted for some extra income which never hurts to have, and the work was actually alright for the payment. Now that I am actually in a situation where I would appreciate similar forms of work (because there is just no way I could go back here as they have blocked my paypal account definitely since remember, I deleted my account with them) i ahve tried searching for lots of things but none of them are as convincing or helpful as this one once was. So have you done anything like this recently, what were your experiences?
